- NavSource record for this hull: PC-461 class submarine chaser; laid down 5 June 1942 by Jeffersonville Boat and Machinery Co., Jeffersonville, IN; launched 18 August 1942; commissioned USS PC-626 on 26 October 1942. Assigned to the European theater: Sicilian occupation 9-15 July 1943; Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings 22-30 January and 1-5 and 10-29 February 1944; invasion of Southern France 15 August - 25 September 1944. On 29 March 1944 joined destroyers Ericsson (DD-440) and Kearny (DD-432), PC-556, PC-558, and British destroyers HMS Laforey, Tumult, Hambledon, and Blencathra in a submarine hunt 30 miles northwest of Palermo that culminated in the sinking of U-223 at 38-48N 14-10E. Assisted PC-558 in sinking a German one-man submarine (Neger-type) 9 May 1944 off Salerno. Captured a German speedboat off Anzio 23 May 1944 and took the crew prisoner. Decommissioned 11 November 1944 and transferred to the Free French at Toulon as Lansquenet (W 121); reclassified P-605; struck from the Navy Register 22 September 1958; scrapped 1959. Specifications: 280 t. light / 450 t. full load; 173'8" x 23' x 10'10"; 20.2 knots; complement 65; one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, one single 40mm, three 20mm, two rocket launchers, four depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; two 1,440 bhp General Motors 16-258S diesels (serial nos. 7779 and 7780), Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates are the standard reference set for this hull and are internally consistent, but no DANFS entry exists to cross-check (page itself states 'There is no DANFS history available for PC-626'). Contains no asbestos content. Hull-number photograph captions and contributor credits document the launch and French-era appearance. 'Lansquenet' spelling per NavSource; some references print 'Lansequenet' (see gaps).

- NHHC casualty table, row '30 Mar | U-223 | Gerlach | HMS Laforey, Tumult, Hambledon & Blencathra | 38-48 N, 14-10 E'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The official U.S. Navy casualty table records U-223 (Kptlt. Gerlach) sunk 30 March at 38-48N 14-10E, crediting HMS Laforey, Tumult, Hambledon, and Blencathra - matching the date-adjacent position in NavSource's account of the 29 March 1944 hunter group in which this hull participated. The official credit for the kill rests with the four British destroyers; the NavSource narrative lists PC-626 alongside USS Ericsson (DD-440), USS Kearny (DD-432), PC-556, and PC-558 as members of the hunting group whose efforts culminated in the sinking.

- Limitations
- Official USN table documents the casualty attribution (British destroyers) and position, not the composition of the hunting group - PC-626's participation in the hunt rests on the NavSource narrative, not this source. No asbestos content. NavSource dates the hunt's start 29 March; NHHC dates the sinking 30 March - consistent with a multi-hour action, carried as such rather than reconciled.

- Finding
- Ship-specific primary records exist at NARA: (1) a muster-roll file unit 'PC-626, 10/26/42-11/11/44' covering the hull's entire U.S. commission (microfilm roll 5848; Ancestry-scanned images listed in the catalog record); (2) monthly war-diary file units for USS PC-626 spanning September 1943 through September 1944 - covering the Sicily, Anzio, Neger-action, and Southern France periods. These are the authoritative personnel and operational records for this hull; contents were not retrieved this session.

- Finding
- Builder-yard record independently lists this hull: the JeffBoat vessel table carries 'PC 626 | US Navy | Sub Chaser | 463d | 173 | 26-Oct-42 | To Free French 1944 as Lansequenet (W 121), scrapped 1959' - corroborating the commissioning date, 1944 Free-French transfer as Lansquenet (variant spelling 'Lansequenet'), and 1959 scrapping. Yard history: Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company was organized in 1938 by American Barge Line on the former M. A. Sweeney & Brothers site; the Navy condemned the neighboring Howard Shipyard in 1942 and leased it to the yard for the war, when it was a major builder of LSTs with employment peaking at 13,000; American Barge Line bought the Howard portion in 1947; the name was later shortened to JeffBoat; the yard closed permanently in April 2018.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Builder-yard asbestos context: a 2025 DOL Benefits Review Board decision (LHWCA, 33 U.S.C. 909) affirms death benefits to the widow of Bennie Burton, a pipefitter and supervisor at Jeffboat in Jeffersonville, Indiana 1964-1995, 'during which time he was allegedly exposed to asbestos, welding fumes, and other toxic substances.' The employer entity is captioned 'OLD JB LLC f/k/a JEFFBOAT LLC f/k/a JEFFBOAT, INCORPORATED' - the successor chain of the yard that built this hull (Jeffersonville Boat and Machinery Co., later renamed Jeffboat). The claim succeeded on summary decision after the employer failed to participate in discovery; the Section 20(a) presumption of compensability went unrebutted on procedural grounds rather than merits adjudication of the exposure evidence.

- Yard-level litigation context only - the employment window (1964-1995) postdates this hull's 1942 construction by two decades; the decision does not address WWII-era conditions, names no vessel, and adjudicates benefits on procedural default (unrebutted presumption), not a merits finding of asbestos conditions. Establishes that asbestos-exposure claims were litigated against the builder's successor, nothing about this hull.

- Finding
- A steel-hulled patrol craft built in 1942 at a major U.S. wartime yard sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel patrol craft of this type and period were thermal insulation on engine exhaust piping and mufflers, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and bulkhead insulation/fireproofing within the 173-foot confined hull. As a diesel-mechanical vessel she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-hull confined-space exposure dynamic applies with full force (65-man complement).
