NavSource 12/150642.htm: title/header, SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser timeline, specifications, and DANFS notice
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The hull was laid down 28 October 1941 by Peterson Boat Works, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; launched 30 May 1942; delivered and commissioned USS PC-642 on 4 August 1942; reclassified SC-642 in April 1943; transferred to the Coast Guard on 24 January 1946 and commissioned USCGC Air Egret (WAVR 420); struck from the Naval Register on 7 February 1946; and sold 11 March 1948. NavSource identifies it as an SC-497-class submarine chaser and gives a 110-foot-10-inch wooden diesel craft's specifications: 98 tons, 17-foot beam, 6-foot-6-inch full-load draft, 21 knots, complement 28, two 1,540-bhp GM 16-184A diesel engines, and two shafts. The page also states that no DANFS history is available for SC-642.

    Population
Peterson Boat Works construction trades (1941-42); Navy crew (1942-46); Coast Guard crew or caretakers (from 1946)
    Limitations
Ship-specific identity and timeline evidence, not asbestos evidence. NavSource is a specialist volunteer archive rather than an official registry; the live page is used for the requested PC/SC identity crosswalk and milestone history. It does not establish actual commissioning or decommissioning from NARA log dates, material content, exposure, quantity, causation, or legal eligibility.

    Finding type

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 lists SC-642 with logbook coverage beginning 4 August 1942 and ending 31 July 1945.

    Population
SC-642 officers and crew reflected in deck-log period
    Limitations
These are logbook-coverage dates, not commissioning, decommissioning, transfer, or disposal dates. The list establishes that NARA identifies the hull as SC-642 and holds/identified logs for that interval; it does not establish asbestos content, operations, personnel exposure, or a disposition date.

    Locator
GAO product page HRD-80-2 (automated access blocked, HTTP 403)
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO's Navy-wide asbestos program review provides era context for a vessel constructed in 1941-42 and operated in the 1940s; it is not a hull-specific survey or material list for SC-642.

1979 report; contextualized against 1941-48 vessel era
    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos-protection program, not an SC-642-specific population
    Limitations
The live GAO product page returned HTTP 403 to automated retrieval on 2026-10-03, so no full-text factual assertion is made from it here. This row is program-level context only and does not establish any asbestos-containing material aboard SC-642, exposure, quantity, condition, causation, or legal eligibility.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, material specification, or qualifying asbestos litigation record was located in the completed non-CourtListener sources. CourtListener is an unresolved access gap: its authenticated helper stopped before returning a usable payload because the fleet-wide paced budget was momentarily spent.

    research completed 2026-10-03
    Limitations
This is a negative finding only as to the completed non-CourtListener research, not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener was blocked rather than searched to completion, so no litigation negative is asserted. It establishes nothing about exposure, causation, product identity, quantity, or legal eligibility.

    Locator
    NavSource 12/15idx.htm, 'SC-497 Class - Continued' entry: 'SC-642 ... ex-PC-642'
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The SC photo index lists SC-642 as 'ex-PC-642' within the SC-497-class continuation block. Together with the SC-642 hull page, this corrects the identity: PC-642 and SC-642 are one wooden SC-497-class submarine chaser, not a PC-461-class patrol craft.
