Harbor Boat Building construction trades (1942); crew (1943-forward)
    Limitations
Ship-specific identity/milestone record only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS one-line entry is filed under SC-725 and does not mention the PC-725 commissioning designation or the April 1943 reclassification - that sequence comes from NavSource (ev-02). Commissioning date conflicts with NavSource's 1 January 1943 by one day (see gaps).

Dahl of Seattle, WA; acquired 1957 by Duncan E. MacAllister of Everett, WA; out of documentation 1986; fate unknown. Specifications: 148 t., 110'10" x 17' x 6'6", 15.6 kts, complement 28; armament one 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two Y-gun depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; two 880 bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officers LTJG Donald F. Ulrich, USNR (1 January 1943) and LTJG G. E. Smith, Jr., USNR (1945). Page photography shows the hull numbered 'SC725' in wartime service; uboat.net adds 'ordered 14 Feb 1942' (secondary).

    Limitations
NavSource and uboat.net are volunteer/specialist secondary compilations, not primary registries - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but the commissioning date differs from DANFS by one day (NavSource 1 Jan vs DANFS 2 Jan 1943; DANFS carried - see gaps). Spec block conflicts with class-level compilations on displacement and complement (see gaps). No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization lists 'SC 725' in the Service Squadron Two vessel inventory (Service Force, Pacific Fleet; Commander Service Squadron Two V. Adm. W. W. Smith), commanded by Lt. G. E. Smith, Jr. (USNR). The document's tactical-organization legend decodes the vessel's listed prefix '94' as Task Force 94, 'Forward Area, CentPac' (V. Adm. J. H. Hoover) - placing this hull in the forward Central Pacific operating area as of that date. The commanding-officer entry corroborates NavSource's second CO (LTJG G. E. Smith, Jr., 1945).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's logbook index lists a deck-log file for SC-725 covering 9/1/1943 - 7/31/1945. No logbook entries appear under PC-725 - the hull's logs are filed under the SC designation only, and coverage begins roughly eight months after commissioning (consistent with the post-reclassification period). These are physical logbooks at NARA, the primary documentary source for this hull's day-to-day wartime operations.

Archival lead only: the index establishes that logs exist and their date coverage, not their contents - the logs are not digitized and were not read. Coverage does not extend to the January-August 1943 PC-725 commissioning period or to decommissioning. Deck logs record movements/events, not materials - no asbestos content expected or established.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The BuShips Booklet of General Plans for an SC-497-class sister hull (SC-1022) states it 'was prepared to take care of the great number of possible variations in the SC-497-511-977 and 1266 classes, due to the various types of machinery and armament furnished the subject vessels' - i.e., this hull's class design. Its general-dimensions and midship-section sheets document wooden construction throughout: white oak keel and frames, yellow-pine planking, fir deck structure, galvanized-steel straps and floors, canvas deck covering; no insulation-material callouts appear on the structural sheets examined. NavSource's class index describes 580 SC-497-class wood-hulled 110-foot submarine chasers built during WWII (142 Lend-Lease); HyperWar's class spec block carries 98 t, 110'10", diesel twin-screw 1,200 shp. SC-725's NavSource page and the SC index further document that many class hulls, including SC-725, commissioned under PC designations in early 1943 and were reclassified to SC in April 1943.

Construction trades at ~30 small boatyards (1941-44); SC-497-class crews
    Limitations
Class-design documentation, not a hull record: the booklet is SC-1022's plan set (same BuShips design series), not SC-725's, and general plans do not substitute for this hull's construction or repair records. Absence of insulation callouts on examined structural sheets does not establish absence of insulation aboard; machinery-specification documents were not examined. Class-size figures conflict across compilations (580 vs 438 - see gaps). No asbestos content in the sheets reviewed.

    Finding
A wood-hulled 110-foot diesel submarine chaser built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but its asbestos-relevant systems are materially narrower than a steam vessel's: with diesel propulsion there are no boilers, steam drums, or steam-line runs to lag. Era-standard small-craft applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging in the machinery space, machinery gaskets and packing (including stern-tube/shaft packing), and electrical insulation in the confined wooden hull. Any insulation materials installed would have been period-era products.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or deck-log material record was located for SC-725, and the class BOGP structural sheets reviewed contain no insulation-material callouts. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no present-day presence. Wooden diesel construction narrows, but does not eliminate, the era exposure pathway.

    Finding
CORRECTION: the intake manifest's 'USS PC-725 (PC-461 class)' conflates this hull's three-month commissioning designation with the unrelated 173-foot steel PC-461 class. Documented sequence: this 110-foot wooden SC-497-class hull commissioned as PC-725 (January 1943) and was reclassified SC-725 in April 1943 - part of a class-wide pattern in which many SC-497-class boats commissioned under PC designations in early 1943 and were reclassified to SC that April. PC-725 was never a PC-461-class patrol craft; DANFS and NARA file the hull under SC-725.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming PC-725 or SC-725 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated fleet helper returned pacing guidance (hourly budget spent, ~58/hr shared pace) on five attempts across ~40 minutes; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps ('asbestos', 'lawsuit', 'mesothelioma' variants) surfaced no qualifying case and no ship-specific asbestos content of any kind - every hit was a name collision (reporter citations, law-firm street addresses, zip codes).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (blocked by fleet pacing, not run). The hull's 1943-45 deck logs (NARA, undigitized) and any Maritime Commission disposal files are the unfollowed documentary leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
