    Limitations
DANFS lists this hull under SC-730 only and does not mention the PC-730 commissioning designation or the April 1943 reclassification; it gives no service history beyond construction and disposal dates, and no asbestos information. Official NHHC source - verified live 2026-10-03.

    Limitations
NavSource is a specialist volunteer archive - authoritative for designation/photo timelines but a secondary compilation; 'transferred to the War Shipping Administration November 1946' conflicts with DANFS 'transferred to Maritime Commission 12/16/46' (WSA was being wound into the Maritime Commission in late 1946) - DANFS date carried for disposal. The 21 January 1946 striking date and the Auckland visit rest on NavSource alone. Page verified live on navsource.net 2026-10-03 (the defunct .org domain not cited).

    SL-44 ship-number listing, SC-730 line (SC-728..SC-764 block); cross-checked against NARA 'navy-online' digitized list
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA holds logbooks for SC-730 covering 11/17/1942 through 7/31/1945 - the single entry block for this hull in Special List 44. These logs are not digitized: SC-730 does not appear in NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' online list (1941 and later), so coverage is physical-holdings only. The 11/17/1942 start coincides with the commissioning date; coverage ends five months before the ship was struck (January 1946).

    Limitations
Log-coverage dates are not commissioning or decommissioning dates: SL-44 documents which physical logbooks NARA holds, not ship status. No logbooks for this hull are listed after 7/31/1945, so August 1945 through disposal is undocumented at the logbook level - the deck logs themselves were not reviewed (undigitized) and may contain the detailed operational history, overhaul periods, and yard visits this record cannot otherwise supply.

    Finding
Post-USN career and loss: the vessel was a wooden coastal freighter converted from an ex-USN sub chaser; ownership chain US Navy (1945 record) -> Davidson Marine Freight Ltd., Vancouver (1949-1951) -> Tidewater Shipping Co. Ltd. -> Union Steamship Co., Vancouver (1956). In 1956 she capsized and sank one mile off Whytecliff in Howe Sound with the loss of three lives. Nauticapedia's references include the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (1993), the Canada List of Shipping, and a manuscript list of BC shipping casualties.

Canadian merchant mariners; three fatalities in the 1956 loss
    Limitations
Nauticapedia is a regional heritage database (secondary compilation sourcing TSB and registry records): its 'built 1945c' field approximates the build year to the USN-disposal era and conflicts with the documented 1942 construction (DANFS/NavSource); one metadata field tags the hull 'Steel' while the narrative text says 'wooden' - the text matches the documented SC-497 wooden hull. The three-lives-lost capsizing detail is carried from this source only.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Asbestos applications plausible aboard this hull type are era-standard and limited: the SC-497 class was wooden-hulled and diesel-powered (two GM 8-268A engines), so there was no boiler, steam-line, or turbine lagging pathway. Era-typical applications on a 1942 diesel subchaser would be engine and exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, valve and machinery packing, electrical insulation, and localized fireproofing - a materially lighter asbestos profile than steam-driven vessels of the same era.

    Limitations
No source names asbestos aboard SC-730/PC-730: this is class/era inference only. Wooden hull construction reduced but did not eliminate era asbestos use; nothing here establishes presence, quantity, or disturbance aboard this hull, and it must not be read as ship-proven.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, litigation naming PC-730 or SC-730, or museum/registry hazmat note was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener hits under the hull designations were name collisions only (Indiana post-conviction docket numbers).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - wooden diesel subchasers of this era carried limited asbestos applications as inference, and the hull's 1956 sinking forecloses any present-day survey. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
This hull is an SC-497-class 110-foot wooden-hulled submarine chaser that was commissioned under the patrol-craft designation PC-730 and reclassified to SC-730 in April 1943 - it is NOT a PC-461-class 173-foot steel patrol craft, despite the PC hull number. The identical reclassification on the sister-hull NavSource page (PC-731 -> SC-731, same builder and program block) shows this was the program-wide reversion of 110-foot wooden boats from PC to SC numbers, not a one-off.

    Limitations
The reclassification rests on NavSource ship pages (verified across two sister hulls); DANFS files the hull under SC-730 without mentioning PC-730, so the commissioning designation is NavSource-sourced. The April 1943 date is given as a month, not a day, by NavSource.
