    Limitations
One-line DANFS compilation entry; it does not state the PC-749 commissioning designation, April 1943 reclassification, complement, propulsion, strike date, or subsequent fate. It contains no asbestos or material content.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource identifies SC-749 as ex-PC-749 and records: laid down 25 May 1942 at Quincy Adams Yacht Yard; launched 7 September 1942; commissioned PC-749 on 27 October 1942; reclassified SC-749 in April 1943; struck from the Naval Register 20 March 1946; transferred to the State Department, Foreign Liquidation Commission, 30 April 1948; fate unknown. Its specification block gives 95 tons displacement, 110'10" length, 17' beam, 6'6" draft, 15.6-knot speed, complement 28, and two General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts.

    Population
Quincy Adams construction trades; U.S. Navy crew (1942-1946); transfer/disposal personnel
    Limitations
NavSource is a secondary compilation and photo archive, not the Navy register; the hull page supplies details absent from the one-line DANFS entry. It contains no asbestos content. The 95-ton displacement is carried as reported and is not reconciled here with differing class figures.

    Locator
SC-497 Class - Continued roster, SC-749 row; class introduction above the roster
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
CORRECTION: the class index lists SC-749 ex-PC-749 in the SC-497-class 110-foot wooden submarine-chaser roster. Its class explanation distinguishes the 110-foot wooden SC boats from the 173-foot steel PC boats and explains the wartime transition from the shared S.C.-PC identification to the SC symbol. Therefore PC-749 is the earlier designation of this wooden SC-497-class hull, not a PC-461-class steel patrol craft.

    Finding
GAO reviewed asbestos use in Navy ships and reported that the Navy's 1975 policy removed and replaced non-asbestos material only when insulation was damaged or had to be removed for repairs; the policy was modified in 1979 for selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

    Locator
Historical shipbuilding and repairing / asbestos-use discussion
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
OSHA's historical shipbuilding discussion states that asbestos products were used extensively on American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including joiner bulkhead systems, insulation for steam and hot-water pipes, boilers and tanks, ceiling tile, and fire-resistant bulkhead sheets; it identifies removal and repair work as exposure pathways.

    Limitations
Historical industry-level context, not a finding about SC-749. The cited steam/boiler pathways do not apply to this hull's documented diesel propulsion, and the source does not establish that any listed product was installed aboard this vessel.

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product inventory, or other primary material record for SC-749 / PC-749 was located in the authoritative sources reviewed. Asbestos documentation for this hull remains unknown; only class/era context is carried.

    Limitations
This is a bounded negative finding about records located, not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener litigation searches were not completed because the authenticated helper reported the fleet-wide pacing stand-down on the first attempted base query; litigation status therefore remains unresolved rather than negative. Quincy Adams yard records and underlying NARA logs were not retrieved.
