NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR-era data, but its commissioned date (11 June 1943) conflicts with the builder's yard record, uboat.net, and NavalCoverMuseum (16 May 1943; see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. The ownership chain and merchant names are uncorroborated by USCG documentation in this record (merchant official number 256355 is corroborated by the yard record, ev-02).

    Finding
Robinson Marine yard record (compiled from merchant-vessel documentation): 'SC 755', US Navy sub chaser, official number 256355, 136 GT, 110 ft, delivered/commissioned 16-May-43, 'Sold 1948 as Yaqui Queen.' uboat.net corroborates: ordered 16 Feb 1942, laid down 20 Jun 1942, launched 3 Apr 1943, commissioned 16 May 1943, builder Robinson Marine Construction Co., Benton Harbor. NavalCoverMuseum designation history matches NavSource (laid down as PC-755 20 Jun 1942, launched/redesignated 3 Apr 1943, commissioned 16 May 1943, struck 3 Jan 1946, to Maritime Commission 20 Jan 1948) and holds a 1943-09-25 cover postmarked Locy Type 2z - the ship carried no post office; the cover was posted from another ship or station, confirming the hull in commission by September 1943.

    Limitations
Secondary compilations agreeing on the 16 May 1943 date (against NavSource's 11 June 1943); the yard record's 'Delivery' column is the documentational proxy for commissioning. uboat.net lists no wartime events for this hull. The NavalCoverMuseum cover is physical-use evidence of the vessel, not a service narrative. No asbestos content in any of these sources.

    Finding
NARA's published logbook inventory lists SC-755 with logbook coverage June 18, 1943 - December 12, 1945, in 7 logbooks (Special List 44, 'Ships with Symbol and Number Designations,' SC block, book page 494; verified against the digitized page image). These are the ship's deck logs, held at NARA College Park (RG 24, Entry 118). Coverage begins after commissioning and ends ten days after decommissioning - consistent with a complete wartime log run.

    Limitations
Holdings inventory only - establishes that 7 logbooks exist and their date span, not their contents. The logs are NOT digitized in the National Archives Catalog (search within NAID 594258 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations' returns no SC-755 file units); they are physical records at NARA College Park. Log coverage dates are not commissioning/decommissioning dates. Wartime assignment, ports, and any yard availabilities must be read from the logs themselves - not reviewed.

  5. [5]Theodore R. Treadwell, 'Splinter Fleet - The Wooden Subchasers of WWII' (splinterfleet.org), class-level documentation of the 110-foot wooden SC type; NavSource specifications block for this hull (diesel propulsion) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
SC-755 was one of 438 SC-497-class submarine chasers - the wooden-hulled 'splinter fleet,' the smallest commissioned warship type of WWII, built 1941-44 by roughly 50 small boat/yacht yards (Robinson Marine, Benton Harbor, was one). Propulsion was twin diesel (this hull: 2 x GM 16-184A, 1,540 bhp each), with no steam plant. Era-standard asbestos applications plausible aboard a small wooden diesel craft of 1943: engine exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the machinery spaces. The wooden hull removes the hull-insulation pathway, and the absence of boilers/steam piping removes the lagging pathway that dominates steam-vessel asbestos exposure; the confined machinery space and 28-man complement bound the plausible exposure population to engineering ratings and ship's force maintenance.

Robinson Marine construction trades (1942-43); engineering ratings aboard (1943-45); any later re-engining/repair trades are undocumented
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, plan sheet, or work package was located for SC-755. Named applications are era-standard for small diesel warships, not confirmed installed materials; the wooden/diesel configuration means materially less asbestos than a steam-driven steel ship of the era, not zero asbestos. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no individual exposure.

Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull - the GAO work centered on Navy shipyard overhauls of larger vessels, not 110-foot wooden craft. Finding type

    Finding
CORRECTION: 'USS PC-755' and 'USS SC-755' are one hull, not two vessels. The boat was laid down 20 June 1942 carrying the patrol-craft designation PC-755, and was reclassified SC-755 at launch (3 April 1943) as part of the Navy's April 1943 reclassification that returned the 110-foot wooden chasers from the PC to the SC series (the class name-ship itself commissioned as USS PC-497 and became SC-497 in April 1943). The hull is an SC-497-class 110-foot WOODEN submarine chaser - not a PC-461-class 173-foot steel patrol craft. Any source listing 'PC-755' in the PC-461 class is propagating the pre-launch designation.

Corrects a classification ambiguity, not a material/asbestos claim. The April 1943 class-wide PC-to-SC reclassification is corroborated by the class name-ship's own designation line and the NavSource index ('ex-PC-' annotations across the SC-977+ block); NavSource carries the reclassification at the launch date for this hull.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material list, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming SC-755/PC-755 was found in the public sources searched. There is no DANFS entry for this hull (NavSource states this; all NHHC candidate URLs return 404), no NVR entry (vessel disposed 1948, pre-1987), and no digitized deck-log file units in the NARA catalog. The vessel's wartime assignment is undocumented in every secondary source consulted - the deck logs (7 volumes, NARA College Park) are the open primary source.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; era materials are plausible (see ev-04). CourtListener status: 3 of 4 base queries completed with only name-collision noise; the 'PC-755' opinion query was pacing-blocked all session (sl-02) - the litigation picture is near-complete but not formally exhaustive. Post-Navy commercial modifications (fishing-boat conversion and later) could have added or removed era materials - undocumented.
