- Finding
- Ship's own war diary documents commissioning: at 1500 on Friday 8 October 1943 the ship lay moored starboard side to USS PC-1172 at Boland Ship Yard, New Orleans, LA, and was placed in commission by Commander Harry R. Hayes representing the Commandant, Eighth Naval District, pursuant to orders from the Chief of Naval Operations. Approval signature block through 20 November reads John A. Pierce as Commanding Officer. After ammunition loading at the Naval Ammunition Depot and fuel at Chalmette (15 Oct) and berthing at Naval Station Algiers, she got underway 18 October for Miami under Cotclant Movement Order No. 723 dated 6 October 1943 (0710 from Algiers; pilot exchange and 1340 stop at U.S. Naval Section Base, Burrwood, Miss.; took departure from the Southwest Pass sea buoy at 2100 that day), and by 23 October was moored alongside SC-1052 at Pier 2, Submarine Chaser Training Center (SCTC), Miami, FL.

- Finding
- War diary documents the end-of-November reassignment: on 28 November 1943 she got underway at 0700 for Key West pursuant to ComTaskGroup 23.2 order dated 27 November 1943, passed the Key West sea buoy 1730, and moored alongside USS SC-1002 at Berth 4, Craig Dock, Key West. Through 30 November she lay at Craig Dock and the Naval Operating Base, Key West (alongside SC-1282 and SC-1353), conducting ASW drills under verbal orders of the CO, Fleet Sound School, Key West. The approval signature block changes from John A. Pierce to Edwin L. Skinner (Jr.) during late November - the diary's 26 November approval signature reads Edwin L. Skinner as Commanding Officer.

- Finding
- Personnel records for this hull: the 'Muster Roll of the Crew of the U.S.S. SC 759 Upon Commissioning 8 October 1943' lists 23 enlisted plankowners, all 'date first received on board 8 October 1943.' The Report of Changes for the month ending 31 August 1944 is signed by Marvin J. Colangelo, Lt(jg), USNR, Commanding Officer, and shows the ship's administrative copies going to BuPers, ComSerRon TEN, ComSerRon TWO, and ComEsDiv 28 (Escort Division 28); a sailor transferred to 'C.O., USNAB, NavNo. 3237, for disposition' and another received from USS Crescent City (APA-21) - consistent with forward-area assignment by August 1944.

- Finding
- Official credit list names this hull: 'SC 759' credited 10 Jul - 31 Jul 1945 under P35 (3d Fleet operations against Japan); 14 - 20 Aug 1945 under P207-23 ('Skagway,' East China Sea-Ryukyus Area); 9 - 13 Sep 1945 under P207-13 (Sasebo, Kyushu-Korea Area); and 14 - 23 Dec 1945 under P207-19 (Tachibana Wan, Kyushu-Korea Area). The Navy Occupation Service Medal list further credits SC 759 for 2 Sep 1945 - 10 Feb 1946, clasp 'A' (Asia). These credits place the hull in forward and Japanese home waters from mid-1945 into February 1946.

Began of Portland, OR, renamed Tualatin; sold 1949 to Roland R. Hurlburt of Hoonah, AK and converted to a tug; sold 1955 to Bernard F. Thompson of Hoonah; sold 1977 to Larry J. - Finding
- CORRECTION (batch-intake reconciliation): this hull is correctly classed SC-497 (110-foot wooden submarine chaser), not PC-461 (the 173-foot steel patrol-craft class). The shared numerical series explains the PC-759 label: the WWII 110-foot wooden chasers were ordered in the common PC/SC/PCE/PCS number series as 'PC-759,' and in 1943 the Navy adopted the separate SC type symbol for the 110-footers; NavSource's index carries this hull as 'SC-759 ex-PC-759.' She was commissioned 8 October 1943 as USS SC-759 - PC-759 was an order/pre-commissioning designation never carried in commission.

- Finding
- As a 1943 wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser, this hull carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel patrol craft of this period were engine and exhaust lagging in the machinery space, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and limited thermal/acoustic insulation products, within a confined 110-foot wooden hull volume.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for SC-759. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; wooden diesel construction materially reduces the candidate asbestos inventory relative to steam vessels but does not establish zero presence. No quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming SC-759 or PC-759 was found in the sources searched. The digitized primary records themselves contain no material-content references (war diary = operational remarks; muster rolls = personnel). CourtListener 'SC-759' base queries returned 2,447 opinion and 16,919 docket hits that are pure name collisions (S.C. reporter cites, statute sections, corporate names) - no vessel-related hit in the returned pages; 'PC-759' base queries remained blocked by the fleet pacer at session end - logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case - only law-firm template pages for other hulls (e.g., DD-759 Lofberg), excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - construction-stage material lists and any abatement records for this hull are undigitized or unlocated, and the PC-759 litigation sweep is an open gap (pacer-blocked, not run). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Ship's own war diary documents two commercial-yard availabilities on this hull at Merrill-Stevens Ship Yard, Miami: moored there from 26 October; hauled on the yard's East Marine Railway 29 October (undocked 1635); still alongside 4 November before returning to SCTC. On 20 November 1943 she grounded on the south side of the Main Ship Channel, Miami; Navy tug YT-336 passed a towing hawser and she refloated at 0320; she then discharged ammunition and returned to Merrill-Stevens, docking on the East Marine Railway again at 1750 that day. The diary otherwise shows routine shakedown/ASW drills and night patrols under CO SCTC Miami through mid-November.
