Robinson, Inc., Ipswich, MA; Launched 14 September 1942; Commissioned USS PC-762, 7 October 1942; Transferred to Brazil 31 December 1942 and named Jutaí (CS 52); Reclassified SC-762 by U.S. Navy in April 1943; Jutaí was reclassified J-2 after World War II; Decommissioned 23 September 1948; Fate unknown.' Specifications: 148 t displacement; 110'10" x 17' x 6'6"; 15.6 kts; complement 28; one 3"/23 mount, two 20mm, two Mousetrap and two K-Gun depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; two 880bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. A captioned photograph (J. R. Eyerman, LIFE magazine archives, via Peter DeForest) shows Jutaí (CS 52) c. March 1943 underway escorting a Casablanca-bound convoy, seen from USS Jeffers (DD 621). Page states flatly: 'There is no DANFS history available for SC-762.'

On 21 July 1944, with CS Graúna (G-8), while part of the escort group of convoy JT-18, she rendered aid to survivors of corvette Camaquã (C-6), which sank in bad weather at about 9:30 roughly 12 miles northeast of Recife (PE). On 29 December 1945 she was subordinated to the Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação; reclassified J-2 post-WWII; 'baixa do serviço' (struck from service) in 1951. Characteristics at Brazilian incorporation: 98 t standard / 130 t loaded; 33.52 m x 5.18 m x 1.52 m; two 16-cylinder GM 184A 'Pancake' diesels, 1,200 bhp, two shafts; 21 knots; 1,500 nm at 12 kt; 3"/23 gun, 2x20mm Oerlikon, 2 quad Mousetrap Mk 20, 2 Mk 3 depth-charge racks, 2 K-gun Mk 6; SF/SL radar and hull sonar; crew 27 (3 officers, 24 enlisted).

- RMB article Table 2 (Lend-Lease receipts) and convoy-TB passage (~p. 452 ff.); Navigator article download/1647/1595, caça-pau employment passage
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Official Brazilian Navy journal documentation for this hull: Table 2 lists 'J2 - Jutaí' received 30 December 1942 at Miami - one of eight wooden 'caça-pau' (class J) subchasers transferred under Lend-Lease to the Comissão de Recebimento de Navios established at Miami 7 July 1942 to train crews and receive ships. The article documents that caça-pau Javari (J1), Jutaí (J2), and Juruá (J3) were incorporated into convoy TB (s/n) of 3-11 February 1943 during their transit to Brazil 'already with the crews trained and prepared after incorporation into the MB at Miami - USA,' and that five more caça-pau followed by April 1943. A companion official article (Navigator) describes class employment: the caça-pau 'escorted convoys from Recife to Belém and/or Trinidad, on journeys of nearly thirty days at sea,' crewed ~28, noting severe habitability limits of the small wooden hulls.

Documents the Jutaí by Brazilian designation and pennant; the ex-SC-762 link is via NGB/NavSource. The Navigator employment passage is class-level (caça-pau generally), not Jutaí-specific. - Finding
- Official Brazilian Navy news coverage documents this hull's best-attested wartime event: on the morning of 21 July 1944 the corvette Camaquã sank in heavy weather near the port of Recife after three successive waves broke her circulation pump and capsized her; 117 aboard, 33 lost including her commanding officer; 'the survivors were immediately rescued by the Caça-Submarinos Jutaí and Graúna, which were part of the same maritime convoy and arrived at the site minutes after the sinking.' NGB adds the convoy designation JT-18, the ~9:30 sinking time, and the ~12-nautical-mile NE-of-Recife position.

- Finding
- The vessel's muster rolls are digitized and held at NARA: file unit 'SC-762, 10/7/42-12/30/42' (Roll 6881), 26 images covering the complete U.S. Navy commissioned period - from commissioning (7 October 1942) to the day before transfer to Brazil. The file-title 'SC-762' dates range is a catalog-level confirmation that this hull's entire USN career ran 7 Oct - 30/31 Dec 1942, and the rolls themselves are the crew-roster record for the ~28-man complement of that period.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel submarine chaser built March-October 1942 sits wholly inside the Navy's documented asbestos era, but her mechanical plant gives a narrower asbestos-application set than a steam warship's: with no boilers or steam lines, the era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, and incidental thermal/acoustic insulation in accommodation and galley spaces - plus whatever insulating felts or asbestos-cement board the small yacht-style builder's practice used in 1942.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or builder contract located for SC-762/PC-762, and no yard-level asbestos documentation exists for W. A. Robinson of Ipswich (a small wooden-boat builder absent from the Atlas shipyards dataset). Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. - CORRECTION / name-collision control: post-1960 Brazilian sources naming 'Jutaí' generally mean a different hull - the minesweeper Jutaí (M-12), ex-USS Egret (AMS-46, ex-YMS-136), a YMS-1-class wooden minesweeper built at Astoria Marine, Oregon, transferred to Brazil 15 August 1960 and assigned to the Força de Minagem e Varredura (1st Naval District, later Base Naval de Aratu / 2nd Naval District) into the mid-1970s. Our hull is the caça-submarino Jutaí CS-52/J-2 (ex-USS PC-762/SC-762), whose Brazilian service ended 1948-1951. The two ships share only the river name.
