    Finding
Primary record of this hull's entire U.S. Navy commission. The roll's forwarding sheet is headed 'MUSTER ROLL OF THE CREW OF THE U.S.S. SC766', dated 30 December 1942, hand-annotated 'comm 11-14-42 to 12-30-42 decomm', certified by Ensign Frank B. Ingersoll Jr., USNR (Executive Officer), approved and forwarded 30 December 1942 by Lt.(jg) D. E. Wilson, USNR, Commanding Officer. The embedded Commissioning Report (Report of Changes, N. Pers. 5b) is for 'the month ending 14th day of November, 1942' and lists the 21-man enlisted nucleus crew (ratings incl. CBM, EM1c, MM2c, MoMM2c, GM2c, CMM(AA), RM3c, QM3c, SM3c, Y3c, SC3c, SoM3c, F3c, S2c, AS): 20 'Received November 14, 42' and one (row 5, SoM3c) 19 November, all from 'RS Boston, Massachusetts'. An earlier forwarding sheet dated 22 November 1942 (XO Ensign E. H. Schock) is likewise headed 'U.S.S. SC766'.

    Limitations
Establishes commissioning date, decommissioning date, designation in use (SC766, not PC-766), and crew size/composition - it does NOT contain any material, construction, or asbestos information. The roll covers only the 46-day U.S. commission; nothing post-transfer is aboard-documented. Names/ratings transcribed from film images; no transcription has been contributed to the catalog record.

Spec block: 148 t., 110'10", 17' beam, 6'6" draft, 15.6 kts, complement 28; armament one 3"/23 mount, two 20mm, two Mousetrap and two K-Gun depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry. Two of its claims conflict with the hull's own muster roll (NAID 192200343): commissioning 11 Nov vs the roll's 'comm 11-14-42', and 'commissioned USS PC-766 / reclassified SC-766 April 1943' vs the roll's 'U.S.S. SC766' usage in Nov-Dec 1942 (see correction row ev-03). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
CORRECTION (two points). (1) Commissioning date: the ship's own muster-roll forwarding sheet and commissioning Report of Changes record 'Comm. date 11-14-42' with the 21-man enlisted nucleus received aboard 14 November 1942 (one man on 19 November) from RS Boston - the prompt-circulating 'DANFS' attribution is wrong twice over: no DANFS entry exists for this hull (NavSource states this explicitly and none is indexed at NHHC/hazegray), and NavSource/NGB/uboat.net/Shipbuilding History all print 11 November 1942. The primary document supports 14 November 1942; 11 November is probably the builder's delivery date. (2) Designation: NavSource carries 'Commissioned USS PC-766 / Reclassified SC-766 by the U.S. Navy in April 1943' - but both surviving muster-roll forwarding sheets (22 Nov and 30 Dec 1942) are headed 'U.S.S. SC766', i.e., the SC-766 designation was in shipboard use from commissioning, months before the formal reclassification NavSource describes.

NGB is a volunteer-compiled repository citing official Brazilian Navy sources (SDGM name registry; official WWII history) - secondary but specifically sourced. One internal conflict: its dates table gives USN incorporation 11 Nov 1942 while the prose says 11 December (the table is consistent with all other sources; the prose December is a typo). Brazilian-spec block (GM 16-184A 'Pancake' diesels, 1,200 bhp, 21 kt, 98t std/130t loaded, complement 27) conflicts with NavSource (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

Robinson yard list row for this hull: 'SC 766, US Navy, Sub Chaser, 136 [tons], 110 [ft], 11-Nov-42, To Brazil 1943 as Juruena (CS 54)' - one of six consecutive Brazilian-bound SCs (SC 762-767) built at the yard. Yard context: William A. Robinson bought an existing small shipyard on Fox Creek near Ipswich in 1937 to build wooden sailing vessels; the yard built over 200 wartime vessels (incl. LCMs and ~75 listed small ships) and was razed after the war when Robinson closed the business.

    Finding
Class context: 438 wooden-hulled SC-497-class submarine chasers completed 1941-44 by roughly fifty small boatyards (steel was allocated to carriers/destroyers; wooden construction let small yards build them in 60-120 days); class standard complement 3 officers + 24 enlisted; engines two GM 8-268-A straight-8 diesels (1,440 hp) or two GM 16-cylinder 184-A 'pancake' diesels; speed 15.6 or 21 knots depending on fit; 1,500 nm at 12 knots. 142 SCs went to allies under Lend-Lease: 78 USSR, 50 France, 8 Brazil, 3 Norway, 3 Mexico. The NavSource SC index shows the interleaved PC/SC numbering (numerous SCs listed as 'ex-PC-###'), confirming PC-766 was a wooden-subchaser contract designation, never a PC-461-class steel patrol craft - PC-461 hulls ran in series 461-496, 542-627, 776-826, 1077-1265, none of which contains 766.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel subchaser built in 1942 carried no steam plant, boilers, or high-energy steam piping - eliminating the boiler/turbine lagging pathway that dominates asbestos content in steam vessels. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this period were engine-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation - the low-intensity end of the WWII naval asbestos spectrum. Her U.S. Navy crew exposure window was 46 days; the far longer exposure window is the Brazilian career (1942-c.1952), which is outside U.S. documentation channels.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships: 'each ship has several types of asbestos containing materials installed; however, thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos,' and 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos' - non-thermal shipboard applications named are electrical resistors, deck tiling, galley-range cabling, piping-system gaskets and packing, and brakes/clutches; 'nearly impossible to build a Navy ship free of the mineral.' Thermal-insulation specs were revised to asbestos-free in 1973, yet some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. Spans this hull's construction (1942) and both navies' service era.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming SC-766, PC-766, or Juruena (CS 54/J-4) was found in the public sources searched. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm listicle content naming this hull at all - consistent with a 46-day US career and immediate foreign transfer.
