    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track Naval Register data but are not independently sourced on the page. Contains no asbestos content. 'Transferred to the War Shipping Administration in June 1948' is the page's disposition label; the WSA had been abolished in 1946 - the actual receiving custodian was the U.S. Maritime Commission (see gaps). No photograph of this hull is held on the page.

    Finding
Official Navy history names this hull on Alaskan duty at war's end: 'Escorted by the submarine chasers PC-794 and PC-818, YP-151 reached Kodiak on 4 December 1945, where her officer-in-charge reported her unseaworthy.' YP-151 had been assigned to the Alaskan Sea Frontier since 19 September 1944 and was routed to Seattle for disposal; the PC-794/PC-818 escort to Kodiak was a leg of that southbound movement.

A mention inside another vessel's DANFS entry - documents PC-794's operational presence and escort employment at Kodiak, Alaska in December 1945, not a history of PC-794 itself. No asbestos or material content. No DANFS entry exists for PC-794 (verified 404 on both NHHC URL patterns, 2026-10-03).

    Finding type

    Finding
The official U.S. Navy chronology records this hull's only documented wartime casualty: 'Submarine chaser PC-794 is damaged when she strikes an uncharted rock off Theodore Point, Otter Island Alaska, 52 deg 45'10"N, 172 deg 53'20"E' - dated 17 June 1945. The stated coordinates fall in the Attu Island vicinity, Near Islands, Aleutians; GNIS and USCG LORAN-station histories place Theodore Point on Attu. The hull survived the casualty - she was in service escorting YP-151 to Kodiak by 4 December 1945.

PC-794 crew aboard at the grounding (1945); any subsequent repair-yard trades
    Limitations
Documents the casualty event (date, place, 'damaged' - not sunk), not the repair: where she was repaired, the scope of hull work, and any yard period are not stated and are undocumented (see gaps). The chronology says 'Otter Island Alaska' but the only named Otter Island is in the Pribilof Islands (St. Paul group, ~57 deg N 170 deg W) - inconsistent with the stated coordinates, which fall in the Attu vicinity where GNIS confirms Theodore Point; BOEM and Nauticapedia both read the location as Attu Island (see gaps). No asbestos or material content.

Federal vessel-casualty database entry for this hull: 'PC-794 - Sub chaser 174'/375 - 6/17/1945 - 1943 - Off Theodore Point, Attu Island. The submarine chaser PC-794 was damaged when she hit an uncharted rock off Theodore Point, Attu Island.' Sources cited: NavChron (the Cressman Navy chronology) and the NavSource PC-794 page. Confirms the casualty and independently resolves the location to Theodore Point, Attu Island; lists the hull as built 1943, 174 ft / 375 tons.

    Limitations
Derivative, not independent: BOEM's own source line is the same Navy chronology plus NavSource, so this row corroborates the event's federal-record standing but is not a second primary witness. The hull is cataloged in a shipwreck database because the casualty occurred on the Alaska shelf - she was damaged, not lost; she returned to service (see ev-02). No asbestos or material content.

Builder's-yard record for this hull: Commercial Iron Works yard hull no. 67, 'PC 794', US Navy Sub Chaser, 463 LDT, 173 ft, delivered 25-May-44, disposition 'To Mexico 1948 as GC 34.' Yard history on the same page: Commercial Iron Works was started in November 1916 by William T. Casey, Otto J. Hoak and Robert Boogs on a 30-acre site just south of the Ross Island Bridge, Portland; it closed in 1946 after building 188 boats during WWII, and the site was sold to Zidell Marine as a ship-dismantling facility. The delivery date (25-May-44) matches NavSource's commissioning date.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel-hulled diesel submarine chaser built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel patrol craft of this type and period were engine and muffler-exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, fire-resistant joiner/bulkhead materials, and winch/windlass brake linings. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam system - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the asbestos footprint is correspondingly smaller than on steam-driven combatants of the era.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, insulation material list, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or museum collection record exists for this hull - it is not preserved, and no deck logs, repair records, or work packages were located in digitized public sources. The CourtListener litigation sweep ran all four base queries (2026-10-03): exact-name opinion and docket counts were 0; hull-number queries returned only name collisions, so no litigation of any kind naming this hull was located. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying asbestos case naming PC-794; the only 'asbestos aboard PC-794' material on the open web is law-firm/marketing listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
