Commercial Iron Works outfitting trades (1944); commissioning and shakedown crew; Harbor Boat Works drydock trades (Jan 1945)

Ship's own contemporaneous reports - establish the escort/convoy operational record and five documented maintenance availabilities on this hull (Jan drydock per ev-01; May main-engine inspection; June tender availability alongside USS ZEUS; July routine repairs; August muffler repair and muffler replacement). The diaries name no materials and contain no asbestos information; exhaust/muffler work is documented as an event only. 'Our four diesel engines' (14 Jul) conflicts with the two-engine NavSource specification - carried in gaps. No diaries for September 1945 onward were located in the catalog.

Standard reference record for this hull: laid down 21 August 1943 at Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR; launched 18 September 1943; commissioned 20 December 1944; decommissioned 17 April 1946 at San Pedro, CA; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in July 1948; fate unknown. Specifications: 450 t., 173'8" x 23' x 10'10", 20.2 kts, complement 65; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, one 40mm mount, five 20mm guns, two rocket launchers, two depth-charge tracks; propulsion two 1,440-bhp Hooven-Owen-Rentschler R-99DA diesel engines (serial nos. 7711, 7712), Westinghouse single-reduction gear, two shafts. Call sign Nan-William-Queen-Able; CO listed LTJG W. D. Wallace USNR (1945); NavSource states no DANFS history exists for PC-801. Crew recollection (Ted Majusick, MoMM3/C) fills the post-diary window: October 1945 at Hilo with Navy Day visitors; November return to Pearl Harbor; January 1946 return to San Pedro; decommissioned 17 April 1946 alongside PC-804 and PC-807.

Yard table row: hull 74, 'PC 801', US Navy subchaser, 463 t., 173 ft., delivered/commissioned 20-Dec-44, 'Sold 1948'; the separate PC-461 build table reads 'to MARAD 1948.' Same-yard sister dispositions corroborated in the table: PC-799 to Korea 1950 as Kum Kang San (PC 702); PC-802 reclassified PCC, to Korea 1950 as Sam Kak San (PC 703).

    Finding
A diesel-powered PC-461-class submarine chaser built 1943-44 at a Navy contract yard sits inside the documented WWII naval-construction asbestos era: the 1946 Fleischer/Drinker survey of Navy and contract yards documents amosite pipe covering, asbestos cloth, and asbestos cement as standard pipe-covering materials in naval vessel construction, and GAO documents Navy-wide asbestos insulation use into the early 1970s. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were thermal insulation, diesel-engine and exhaust-system lagging, gaskets and valve packing throughout machinery spaces, electrical insulation and cable, deck coverings, accommodation-space insulation, brake linings, and fireproofing. The hull carries no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply. Her own war diaries document repeated work on the diesel plant that is the era-relevant disturbance pathway: a ten-day 'complete inspection of main engines' availability (May 1945, Pearl Harbor Navy Yard), a three-day tender availability alongside USS ZEUS (June 1945), five days for 'repair of main engine mufflers' (August 1945, Eniwetok), and a further availability 'for replacing main engine mufflers' (August 1945, Pearl Harbor) - maintenance on the exhaust/muffler system where era lagging would have been applied.

The landmark U.S. government industrial-hygiene survey of WWII naval-vessel construction: pipe coverers at two Government navy yards and two Navy contract yards were examined (1,074 X-rayed; 3 asbestosis cases, all 20+-year pipe coverers), with dust counts and material analysis across seven pipe-covering operations. The pipe covering 'frequently employed was amosite' (a magnesium-iron silicate asbestos), and 'much asbestos cloth and asbestos cement were likewise used.' Documents that amosite insulation materials were standard in naval-vessel construction during the period this hull was built at a Navy contract yard.

    Limitations
Site-level environmental record, NOT a hull record: it documents that the Portland yard where PC-801 was built became a documented asbestos-contaminated cleanup site. The documented contamination derives principally from the post-war shipbreaking era (1946-1976) on the same site, not from the 1943-44 construction of this hull; the DEQ record does not itemize construction-era conditions. It establishes nothing about materials aboard this hull, individual exposure, quantities, or legal eligibility.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming PC-801 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). There is no DANFS entry - unnamed PCs were outside DANFS coverage and NavSource states none exists; the NHHC candidate URLs return 404. NVR carries no entry (disposed pre-1987). The MARAD Vessel History Database contains no record for this hull. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying litigation and no ship-specific asbestos material; the only 'asbestos' content encountered for PC-class hulls generally is law-firm listicle content excluded by source policy. CourtListener coverage is INCOMPLETE this session: the four prescribed base queries could not be completed - every attempt was refused by the fleet-wide pacing limiter (hourly/burst budget, not the daily quota) - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44 steel hull in the documented Navy asbestos era is consistent with era-standard ACM in machinery/gasket applications, and this hull's own diaries document repeated engine/exhaust availabilities. The digitized deck logs (12/44-6/45) and undigitized disposal records remain unworked leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
