    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
No individual DANFS history exists for this hull. The official small-craft roster mirror lists this block of hulls only as a grouped row, 'PC-811-822,' commissioned '1942-44,' with no ship name, builder, or notes column populated - unlike neighboring blocks that do carry individual linked pages (e.g., PC-802, PC-810, PC-823 each link to a dedicated history page; PC-811-822 does not). A direct URL request for an individual PC-812 page (https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/PC/PC-812.html) returns HTTP 404. The live NHHC site (history.navy.mil) independently 404s on its DANFS sub-pages generally, a standing link-rot defect also noted in prior batches, but that defect is separate from and does not explain this hull's absence from the small-craft index itself.

    Limitations
Establishes that no individual DANFS entry exists for this hull in the official corpus (as mirrored) - it does not establish that no documentation exists anywhere (e.g., unpublished NARA deck logs/ship movement cards were not retrieved this session - see gaps). Says nothing about asbestos content.

Builder: Commercial Iron Works, Portland, Oregon. Laid down 27 November 1943; launched 11 February 1944; commissioned USS PC-812, 4 May 1945, with Lt. W. G. Schust, USNR, as first commanding officer (uboat.net). Struck from the Naval Register 12 April 1946. Transferred to the War Shipping Administration in March 1948; transferred to Portugal later in 1948 and initially renamed NRP Flores; renamed NRP Príncipe (pennant P-581) in 1956 (Navypedia); discarded by the Portuguese Navy in 1968. Steel-hulled PC-461-class submarine chaser; diesel propulsion (two Hooven-Owen-Rentschler diesel engines, approx. 2,560 bhp combined, Westinghouse single-reduction gear, two shafts) - no boilers or steam turbines. Displacement 280 tons light / 450 tons full load; length 173'8"; beam 23'; draft 10'10"; speed 19 knots; complement 65. Three sister hulls from the same production block (PC-809, PC-811, PC-1257) followed an identical disposition path per the same compilations - struck 12 April 1946, transferred to the War Shipping Administration March 1948, transferred to Portugal in 1948 as Sal (P-584), Madeira (P-582), and Santiago (P-583) respectively - internally consistent cross-corroboration, though none of it is a primary government record.

    Limitations
NavSource, uboat.net, and Navypedia are volunteer/enthusiast naval-history compilations, not official government registries. No DANFS entry exists for this hull (ev-01) to cross-check against; the Naval Vessel Register detail page (nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/details/PC812.htm) redirects to a DoD-authenticated login portal (login.nslc.navy.mil, HTTP 302) that could not be completed in this research session; no archived/pre-authentication snapshot of that NVR page exists in the Wayback Machine (checked, no result); NARA deck logs or ship movement cards were not retrieved (catalog.archives.gov's programmatic search requires an API key not available this session); the MARAD vessel-history database (vesselhistory.marad.dot.gov) does not index this hull by its Navy hull number (it is organized by merchant/civilian vessel name) and its search interface could not be queried successfully in this session. All vitals above are internally consistent across three independent compilations plus a corroborating sister-hull disposition pattern, but remain UNVERIFIED against any primary U.S. government record - treat as a researched lead, not a confirmed official vessel history. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
Navypedia.org describes PC-812's 1948 transfer to Portugal as occurring 'under MDAP' (Mutual Defense Assistance Program), and this batch's own ship assignment likewise labels the transfer 'MDAP.' The Mutual Defense Assistance Act was signed into law October 6, 1949 - roughly a year and a half after the stated 1948 transfer date. A transfer completed in 1948 could not have been effected under a program authorized by a statute enacted in October 1949.

    Limitations
This row corrects the program-name attribution; it does not identify what the actual 1948 transfer authority was (an early bilateral arrangement tied to the February 1948 Azores transit-rights exchange of notes is plausible given the timing and the parties involved, but no source consulted confirms this, and it is not asserted here). Does not affect the transfer date itself, which is independently and consistently given as 1948 across NavSource, uboat.net, and Navypedia.

Class/era inference only: PC-812 was a steel-hulled PC-461-class submarine chaser built 1943-44 with diesel propulsion (two diesel engines on two shafts) - the class had no boilers or steam turbines. A diesel-powered steel combatant of this era would be expected to carry period-standard engine- and pump-system gaskets and valve packing, pipe and exhaust-system lagging/insulation, deck covering, and electrical cable insulation as general WWII Navy/shipyard practice; it would NOT be expected to carry boiler-lagging or turbine-insulation, which this class never had.

    Limitations
Class/era and propulsion-type inference only - no ship-specific finding is made for this hull. No full material inventory, survey, or builder-yard industrial-hygiene record is public for PC-812 or for Commercial Iron Works (builder not present in the Atlas shipyards.json dataset of 37 yards - see gaps). Does not establish what, if anything, remained aboard by the time of the 1948 transfer or afterward.

    Finding
General federal adjudication guidance (not ship- or class-specific): 'Some of the major occupations involving exposure to asbestos include mining, milling, shipyard work, insulation work, demolition of old buildings, carpentry and construction, manufacture and servicing of friction products (such as clutch facings and brake linings), and manufacture and installation of products such as roofing and flooring materials, asbestos cement sheet and pipe products, and military equipment.' And: 'Common materials that may contain asbestos are steam pipes for heating units and boilers, ceiling tiles, roofing shingles, wallboard, fireproofing materials, and thermal insulation.'

n/a (general federal guidance, undated to any specific hull)
    Limitations
Pure background on the general universe of WWII-era occupational asbestos exposure categories recognized in federal veterans'-benefits adjudication; names no ship, class, or shipyard and establishes nothing about PC-812, the PC-461 class, or Commercial Iron Works specifically. Provided as context only, per the batch rule that class/era material never becomes a ship-specific finding.

    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located. Exact-name opinion: 0 results. Exact-name docket: 0 results. Hull-number opinion: 0 results. Hull-number docket: 20 results (the full set - 'next' was null, confirming no additional pages beyond this page-20 request, so this was not an overflow case and no asbestos-qualified variant query was warranted per the batch rule). All 20 hull-number-docket hits were reviewed individually and are name collisions unrelated to this vessel or to asbestos litigation of any kind: personal Chapter 7/13 bankruptcies (e.g., David Cain Lynn, E.D.N.C. 13-02832; Dennis J. and Tuesday A. Harrow, E.D. Mich. 04-33306; John J. Pappas Sr., N.D. Ill. 16-13061; several more N.D. Ill. consumer bankruptcies), corporate bankruptcies (Sears Holdings, S.D.N.Y. 18-23538; The Reader's Digest Association, S.D.N.Y. 09-23529; LeClairRyan PLLC, E.D. Va. 19-34574; KServicing Wind Down Corp./Kabbage Inc., D. Del. 22-10951 - a 5,000-page creditor-matrix exhibit, the likely source of an incidental 'PC-812' string match), a product-liability case (HipSaver Co. v. J.T. Posey Co., D. Mass. 1:05-cv-10917), a pharmaceutical MDL (In re Xarelto Products Liability Litigation, E.D. La. 2:14-md-02592), an antitrust MDL (In re Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation, N.D. Ala. 2:13-cv-20000), and a decades-old water-rights adjudication (New Mexico v. Aragon, D.N.M. 6:69-cv-07941). None names a Navy vessel, asbestos exposure, or any plaintiff with a plausible connection to PC-812; 'PC-812' is evidently matching an incidental string (a docket/exhibit number, account fragment, or similar) within these unrelated filings, not a reference to this hull.

    n/a (no qualifying litigation found)
    Limitations
A thorough per-hit review was performed (required because a name match is not automatically a qualifying case); all 20 hull-number-docket hits were individually classified as non-qualifying name collisions, and none warranted the asbestos-qualified variant query (which the batch rule reserves for genuine page-overflow on a high-collision name - this was not an overflow). This negative finding covers only what CourtListener's public index returns for these four query forms on 2026-10-03; it does not rule out litigation indexed under a different vessel-name variant, a sealed docket, or a case filed after this date.
