- Documents service history, yard periods (Pearl Harbor conversion Oct 1940-Jan 1941; Mare Island alterations 1942; San Francisco-area repairs Sep-Nov 1943), and loss - but not materials removed or installed in those yards and no asbestos information. DANFS gives no casualty count; the 'Preble (DD-345)' reference uses her original hull number (she was DM-20 by 1944). The 1943 Mare Island yard dates come from NavSource photo captions, not DANFS.

- Finding
- Los Angeles Times (29 May 2000) reports the wreck of USS Perry was found on 1 May 2000 by a search crew hired by survivor Larry Tunks (divers Navot Bornovski and Jeff Wonnenberg): the destroyer lies about 700 yards off Angaur at 240 feet, roughly 2,000 yards from the Navy's logged sinking position. The paper reports eight crewmen killed in the sinking and about 146 men recovered from the water; six may remain entombed in the No. 1 fireroom. Navy officials noted the Navy retains control of sunken naval vessels and treats those with possible remains as protected sites.

- Limitations
- Establishes the wreck's location, condition (on its side, broken in two), casualty figure (8 killed), and Navy sovereignty/war-grave posture as of 2000 - contains no asbestos or materials information. Confirms the hull was never salvaged, so whatever materials were aboard remain in place; exact wreck coordinates are not published in the reviewed sources.

- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index lists hull-specific RG 19 holdings for this vessel: PERRY DD-340 and PERRY DMS-17 under Alphabetical Ship Drawings (NAID 53484733), PERRY DD-340 under Hull series Ship Engineering Drawings (NAID 153714460), and PERRY DD-340 Microfilm (NAID 175670240). DPLA additionally surfaces a Bureau of Ships 'Booklet of General Plans' for USS Perry (DD-340/DMS-17), NARA catalog id 167818198, including title sheet, general information and data, and midship sections.

- Locator
- Beginning Research; General Information Books; Cartographic Branch; Other Records
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA's research guide identifies the record groups useful for establishing asbestos aboard Navy vessels through 1961 - including RG 19 destroyer General Information Books and S39 insulation/lagging and S48 piping drawings - and cautions that deck logs and muster rolls do not directly show asbestos aboard ships.

- Limitations
- A research guide, not a Perry material record. It establishes where ship-specific evidence would live and why service records alone cannot show it; it does not establish that a Perry General Information Book exists or that this ship contained asbestos.

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: Perry was built 1920-22 at Mare Island Navy Yard as a Clemson-class flush-decker with a geared-turbine steam plant - the construction era in which naval boilers, steam lines, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing were standardly asbestos-insulated - and underwent a documented conversion yard period at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (October 1940-January 1941) plus Mare Island alterations (1942) and a September-November 1943 overhaul. Both yards are Atlas-documented asbestos sites (Mare Island tier 2: Unibestos, Marinite, Transite, Kaylo, Careytemp, gaskets, packing, refractory products documented at yard level plus worker litigation; Pearl Harbor tier 1: pipe covering, insulation blankets, asbestos mud, amosite blankets documented at yard level plus elevated mesothelioma findings in the worker cohort).

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific finding for this hull. Yard-level documentation describes conditions and products at the facilities, not what was installed in or removed from Perry during her yard periods. Not a quantity, not a product identification for this hull.

[7]Negative result from DANFS, NARA Ship Plan Index, NARA asbestos guide, NavSource, press coverage, and CourtListener sweep; see search_ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-perry-dd340-01 through sl-uss-perry-dd340-11
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific record located: no asbestos survey, product schedule, abatement record, museum hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding for USS Perry (DD-340/DMS-17) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was lost in action 13 September 1944 and never salvaged, so the postwar documentation channels that generate such records (reserve fleet surveys, museum curation, abatement contracts) never existed for this vessel.

- Limitations
- A bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. Underlying NARA drawings, any General Information Book, conversion work packages, and deck logs were not obtained or reviewed. The intact sunken wreck preserves whatever era materials were aboard.

[8]CourtListener authenticated API v4 search responses via fleet helper cl-auth-search.py; pacing-guard messages on subsequent queries [court_record]
- Locator
- Search count 0 on the asbestos-scoped opinion query and on '"DD-340"' opinions; ledger sl-08 through sl-11
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener API v4 opinion searches returned HTTP 200 with count 0 for both '"USS Perry" asbestos' and the hull-number query '"DD-340"'. The plain exact-name opinion query, '"DMS-17"', and docket searches were blocked by the fleet pacing guard after the shared request budget was spent; retries were deferred per the helper's stand-down guidance. No qualifying asbestos litigation finding can be made from this incomplete sweep.

- Limitations
- The zero counts apply only to the two opinion queries that completed - not to dockets or all litigation, and '"DD-340"' does not match opinion text written as 'DD 340' or 'DD340'. 'Perry' is a high-collision surname; unscoped hits would need manual hull attribution regardless. Pacing blocked the remaining queries; this does not prove no asbestos complaint or opinion exists.

[9]DANFS, Perry III (DD-340) specifications block - verbatim transcription (live NHHC page returns 404) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS entry, specifications block ('cl. Clemson')
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Correction: upstream intake metadata labeled this vessel 'Hopkins' class. DANFS confirms DD-340 is a Clemson-class destroyer ('cl. Clemson' in the specifications block; laid down at Mare Island Navy Yard 15 September 1920, launched 29 October 1921, commissioned 7 August 1922). The hull identity DD-340/DMS-17 is unchanged; only the class label was wrong.

- Limitations
- Corrects a class-label metadata error only; 'Hopkins' is not a destroyer class - USS Hopkins (DD-249) was itself a Clemson-class ship that followed the same conversion path (DMS-13, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard), the likely source of the upstream confusion. No asbestos content is implied by this row.

- DANFS identifies the third Perry (DD-340) as a Clemson-class destroyer laid down 15 September 1920 at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Calif.; launched 29 October 1921; commissioned 7 August 1922, Lt. Richard H. Booth in command. Specifications block: 1,190 tons, 314'5" x 30'8" x 13'6", 36 kt, complement 133, four 4-inch + one 3-inch guns, twelve 21-inch torpedo tubes.
