[2]NavSource Online, Motor Gunboat/Patrol Gunboat Photo Archive, PGM-52 vessel page (live page verified 2026-10-04, HTTP 200) [other_primary]
- Locator
- PGM-52 page, PGM-39 Class milestone block and Specifications block
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The live PGM-52 page identifies this PGM-39-class craft as built for Burma; 'Laid down 26/28 May 1961 as PGM-52 by the Peterson Builders, Sturgeon Bay, WI'; 'Transferred to Burma in June 1961 under the Military Assistance Program and reclassified PGM-406'; 'Fate unknown.' Specifications block: displacement 100 t.; length 101'; beam 21'; draft 7.5'; speed 17 kts.; complement 17; armament one Mk 3 40mm mount, two Mk 24 twin 20mm mounts and two .50 cal. machine guns; propulsion eight 255bhp General Motors 6-71 diesel engines, two shafts. The page states 'There is no DANFS history available for PGM-52' and shows no image.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer historical archive, not an official registry. The 'laid down 26/28 May 1961' entry collides with the yard-list delivery/completion date of 28 May 1961 carried by two independent build lists - NavSource's milestone is treated as delivery, and a 16 September 1960 laid-down date from another compilation is flagged in gaps. No asbestos, materials, commissioning, or post-transfer content.

- Locator
- PGM-39 Class Motor Gunboat index block, PGM-43 to PGM-58 entries
- Finding type

- Finding
- The PGM index documents this hull's six-boat transfer cohort: PGM-43 to Burma as PGM-401, PGM-44 as PGM-402, PGM-45 as PGM-403, PGM-46 as PGM-404, PGM-51 as PGM-405, and PGM-52 to Burma as PGM-406. It also places the adjacent MAP exports: PGM-39/-40/-41/-42 to the Philippines (Agusan/Catanduanes/Romblon/Palawan), PGM-53/-54 and PGM-58 to Ethiopia as PC-13/-14/-15, and PGM-55/-56/-57 to Indonesia.

[4]Naval Marine Archive, Peterson Builders yard list (Sturgeon Bay, WI), Motor Gunboats section; corroborated by Shipbuilding History gunboats table (shipbuildinghistory.njscuba.net/us-navy-small/pg3/) [other_primary]

- Finding type

- Finding
- The Peterson Builders yard list records: 'PGM 52 | Unnamed (PGM 406) | Burma | Patrol Gunboat | 100d | 101 | 28-May-61' - confirming the builder, the unnamed-for-export character of the hull, the 100-ton/101-ft class figure, and a 28 May 1961 completion/delivery date. Shipbuilding History's gunboat table carries the matching row 'PGM-52 | Burmese Navy | Peterson | Sturgeon Bay WI | 118 | 100 | 28 May 1961 | PGM-406' with no struck date - consistent with an undocumented final disposition.

- Locator
- uswarships.jounin.jp/pgm.htm, PGM-39-class table, PGM-52 row and class spec notes
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- This compilation gives PGM-52's construction sequence as laid down 16 September 1960, launched 13 April 1961, completed 28 May 1961, loaned to Burma August 1961 and renumbered PGM-406 - the only located source giving a distinct keel-laying date. Its class notes separate PGM-43/-44/-45/-46/-51/-52 as a 'PGM-43 class' on specification differences, with a variant machinery fit (two Detroit Diesel 6-110 engines, 1,330 hp) and a variant armament note (no 20mm as built, later rearmed with two single 40mm).

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation; its construction dates are unverified against a primary source. The same entry carries a demonstrable error - a claim that this hull went on to Ethiopia as PC-11 and was lost April 1977 - corrected at ev-uss-pgm-52-pgm52-06, which lowers confidence in the entry overall; builder rendered 'Julius Petersen' vs documented 'Peterson Builders' (variant flagged in gaps). The machinery/armament variants conflict with NavSource/Navypedia and are carried in gaps, not in propulsion_summary.

- Finding
- Navypedia's Burma PGM401-class table lists PGM406: builder Peterson Builders, Sturgeon Bay; completed June 1961; fate 'in service (2019).' The page carries a photograph captioned 'PGM406 1992' documenting the boat in Burmese/Myanmar service three decades after transfer. Class technical data: displacement standard 100 t / full 141 t; length 30.8 m; breadth 6.45 m; draught 2.30 m; two shafts; eight General Motors 6-71 diesels, 2,040 hp; 17 knots; diesel oil 16 t; endurance 1,000 nm at 16 knots; armament 1x1 40/60 Mk 3, 2x2 20/70 Mk 24, 2x1 12.7/90; PGM405/406 fitted with Raytheon 1500 radar (PGM401-404 carried EDO320); complement 17. A 1971 Soviet foreign-fleets reference independently lists all six boats (PGM-401 through PGM-406) in Burmese service (weapons-world.ru scan of the 1971 Kovalenko/Ostroumov handbook).

[7]Navypedia, Ethiopia PC11 large patrol craft class page - Ethiopian PC-11 identified as ex-WVP95304 (Peterson Builders, 1958), not ex-PGM-52 [other_primary]

- Navypedia eth_cs_pc11.htm, Ships table PC11 row ('ex-WVP95304', 'sunk 4.1977'), Technical data block
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: the uswarships.jounin.jp compilation asserts that PGM-52 was later re-transferred from Burma to Ethiopia as PC-11 and lost April 1977. Navypedia's Ethiopia PC11-class table shows the Ethiopian PC-11 was 'ex-WVP95304,' a Peterson-built Cape-class-pattern patrol boat commissioned 1958 - a different hull from a different build series - and that PC-11 was 'sunk 4.1977.' The April 1977 loss is real (the Ethiopian Navy lost patrol boat P-11 in April 1977, variously attributed to a storm or to Eritrean People's Liberation Front action at Massawa) but belongs to the Cape-class-derived boat, not to this hull. The 'PGM406 1992' photograph (ev-05) independently documents this boat still in Burmese service fifteen years after the claimed loss.

- Limitations
- Corrects a circulating identity error propagated by one secondary compilation; the corrected identity (ex-WVP95304) itself rests on Navypedia's compilation - ex-hull-number and 1958 commissioning are internally consistent with the Cape-class specification block shown on the same page (4 Cummins diesels, 2,200 hp, 21 knots, 29.0 x 5.8 x 1.6 m, Mousetrap ASW) which differs materially from this hull's PGM-39-class specification.

- Finding
- A 100-ton diesel patrol gunboat built 1960-61 sits inside the documented era of asbestos use in U.S. shipbuilding; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this period were thermal insulation, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in machinery spaces. As a diesel-only craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding
- No public ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the sources completed: no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazardous-material disclosure, material list, or qualifying litigation result naming PGM-52 or Burmese/Myanmar PGM-406 was retrieved. NavSource explicitly reports no DANFS history is available for PGM-52; the NHHC 'P' index carries no entry and the direct DANFS URL returns 404. CourtListener base queries were pacing-blocked by the fleet-wide budget governor at both attempts this session - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The only litigation located touching the builder is Ozzello v. Peterson Builders (E.D. Wis. 1990), a LHWCA maritime-injury case over a 1987 fall aboard MCM-1 - not an asbestos case and not this hull; excluded.
