    Finding
DANFS service record (full entry): Pintail (AMc-17), built in 1937 as Three Star by the Kruse and Banks Shipbuilding Co., North Bend, Ore., was purchased by the Maritime Commission from the MacPhister-Van Camp Canning Co., San Pedro, Calif., and transferred to the Navy 1940-11-19; renamed Pintail (AMc-17) 1940-12-07; converted by the Western Boat Building Co., Tacoma, Wash.; placed in service 1941-02-18. The former purse seiner operated as a coastal minesweeper in the 13th Naval District until placed out of service and struck from the Navy List 1945-03-30; redelivered to the Maritime Commission 1945-07-23 and subsequently sold at auction. DANFS spec line: dp 210; 84'9" x 22' x 8'6"; 9 k.; cpl 17; armament 1 machine gun. DANFS gives no name-series numbering - the only USS Pintail.

    Limitations
Administrative service history; contains no asbestos, insulation, materials, or health information. Entry is four sentences - one of the briefest DANFS records; nothing about the conversion scope beyond the yard name is documented. Mirror transcription cited because live official pages were unreachable.

    Finding
NARA Special List #44 (vessel and station log books, by ship number) lists deck logs for 'AMC-17 (Pintail)' covering 1941-02-18 through 1942-08-01 - from the in-service date forward, but stopping ~31 months before the out-of-service date (1945-03-30). The hull does not appear in NARA's online digitized deck-logs index, and a NARA Catalog title search for Pintail logbooks returns no digitized records (the 'Pintail' hits in the catalog are wildlife photographs).

    1941-1942 (listed coverage)
    Population
Officers and enlisted named on log title sheets and muster lists (crew of ~17)
    Limitations
Holdings confirmed, contents not examined: the logs are paper records at Archives II (College Park, MD), not digitized for this hull. Deck logs record operations, weather, and personnel and are unlikely to document construction materials. Why SL-44 coverage ends 1942-08-01 - ~31 months before the ship left service - is unexplained by the finding aid; later logs may exist under another listing or were never accessioned.

May 1941 off Seattle, Washington, sourced to the Naval History and Heritage Command. The images place the vessel in 13th Naval District waters weeks after entering service. The photo files were not retrieved and their digitization status in the NARA Catalog is unverified.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Class-level context: the AMc-series 'converted vessel' coastal minesweepers were commercial fishing vessels - mostly draggers and purse seiners, largely tuna clippers from west-coast ports - acquired and converted in 1940-41. Class characteristics ranged 165-270 tons displacement, 76'7"-136' length, 8.5-14 knots, complement 15-47 (class ranges, not this hull). Contemporary tabulations count 45 converted fishing vessels alongside 70 purpose-built 97-ft Accentor-class units in the AMc series; this hull is a conversion (ex-Three Star, Kruse & Banks, 85 ft, 210 t, 1937), not the Accentor design.

    Limitations
Secondary compilations of class-level USN data, not hull-specific and not materials documents; contain no asbestos information. The Kruse & Banks yard list shows Three Star under official number 236202 (original owner Maskake Kuwabara) and says 'To USN 1942' - a typo against the documented 1940-11-19 transfer; DANFS dates govern.

    Finding
Program-level era context: GAO documented the U.S. Navy's asbestos-protection program and its insulation-removal policies (fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards) - establishing that asbestos was in standard use in Navy ship construction and repair of the era. This vessel was built at a private North Bend boatyard, converted at a Tacoma boat shop, and operated in the 13th Naval District; no connection between GAO's surveyed yards and this hull is documented.

    Finding
Name collision located: litigation web hits for 'Pintail' vessels trace to In re Magnolia Fleet, L.L.C. (5th Cir. No. 17-30923, decided 2018-05-09, per curiam, summary calendar; district court E.D. La. No. 2:16-cv-12297) - a Jones Act / limitation-of-liability matter arising from the 2015-12-30 capsizing of the M/V PINTAIL, a 24-foot commercial workboat on the Mississippi River owned by Magnolia Fleet and operated by River Construction, Inc. (death of deckhand James Swafford). That vessel is unrelated to this hull and the matter is not asbestos litigation. Only one USS Pintail exists in the Navy name series (DANFS assigns no numbering), so unqualified 'Pintail' vessel litigation references are the modern workboat, not AMc-17.

Disambiguation row only; no asbestos content and no connection to this hull. The M/V Pintail was a small modern workboat; Jones Act/unseaworthiness claims with no asbestos allegations. Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, materials specification, museum or hazmat disclosure, or digitized archival file naming this hull was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). The CourtListener litigation sweep (vessel name and hull number, opinions and dockets) could not be completed - the authenticated API was throttled at its daily quota at research time - so litigation status is unverified rather than negative. Web-level litigation triage surfaced only the M/V Pintail name collision (ev-06) and law-firm marketing ship-list pages, excluded per source rules.

    Limitations
Absence of a located record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; conversely, this diesel wooden platform lacks the boilers and steam piping where period Navy asbestos use is best documented. The litigation check is incomplete at research time and is flagged in gaps for a re-run.
