[1]Naval History and Heritage Command, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, 'Pitamakan' [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Pitamakan entry, specification header and sole service paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies Pitamakan as a Sassaba-class YTB-403 built by Gibbs Corp. at Jacksonville, laid down 1944-11-06 and launched 1945-06-29. Its header lists complement 10. Assigned to the 13th Naval District in 1945, it entered the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Astoria in March 1946; it began active duty with the 6th Naval District in July 1953, became YTM-403 in February 1962, and remained active there into 1970.

- Population
- Listed complement of 10; individual sailors unverified
- Limitations
- DANFS gives a listed complement, not individual rosters or actual staffing. It gives neither a formal commissioning date nor an asbestos, machinery, overhaul, or exposure finding. The July 1953 active-duty date is sufficient for the batch's eligibility criterion without treating the 1945 delivery or 1946 reserve period as active service.

[2]Naval Sea Systems Command, Inactive Ships, 'Ship History' table, dated 28 June 2011 [other_primary]
- Locator
- PDF p. 104, YTM 0403 PITAMAKAN row (search-index extraction)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The NAVSEA Inactive Ships ship-history table has an entry for YTM 0403 PITAMAKAN with removal date 13-Aug-81 and final disposition field 'SCRAP SALE'.

- 1981; table compiled 2011
- Limitations
- The official NAVSEA PDF returned HTTP 403 to direct retrieval; the quoted table row was read in the search engine's extraction of that official PDF. 'Removal' is not proven to be the formal decommissioning or striking date. 'SCRAP SALE' is a disposition code, not proof that scrapping was completed; no asbestos condition or abatement details appear in the extracted row.

- Locator
- Shipbuilding and repairing—historical contact with asbestos in shipyard work, paragraph beginning 'Asbestos products were used extensively'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- OSHA's 1994 shipyard asbestos rule describes extensive asbestos use on American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including some bulkhead systems, insulation on steam and hot-water pipes, boilers and tanks, ceiling tile, and fire-resistant sheets. This is era-wide context for a 1945 Navy tug, not an identification of any Pitamakan component.

- Study period
- Early 1940s-late 1970s
- Population
- American ships and shipyard workers generally
- Limitations
- OSHA discusses American ships as a population; it does not name Pitamakan or establish that this small tug carried any listed product. Its steam-system examples cannot establish that Pitamakan had steam propulsion. This row supports research priority only, not presence, exposure, quantity, causation, or current condition.

- Ship Plan Index, PITAMAKAN | YTB-403 | RG 19 | Microfilm | NAID 175670289; research guide https://www.archives.gov/research/military/navy/guided-topics/asbestos, Cartographic Branch S39/S48 discussion
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index lists PITAMAKAN, YTB-403, in RG 19 Microfilm with catalog identifier 175670289. NARA's Navy asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 hull-numbered engineering drawings, including S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping, and Bureau of Ships correspondence by hull and contractor as routes to test a materials question.

- Potential 1944-1961 records
- Limitations
- The index identifies a Pitamakan microfilm catalog item, but the film or its images were not opened. Its contents, any material identification, and whether this hull had asbestos remain unknown. S39/S48 are research suggestions from NARA's general guide, not verified contents of NAID 175670289.

[5]Batch 9373 search ledger, rows sl-uss-pitamakan-yt403-01 through sl-uss-pitamakan-yt403-06 [other_primary]
- Locator
- This record's search_ledger; CourtListener status reported separately and not counted as a completed negative search
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos document was located in the reviewed public DANFS entry, NAVSEA ship-history table row, NARA research guidance, OSHA rule, or targeted public web searches for Pitamakan with asbestos terms. No hull-specific survey, abatement record, or materials specification was retrieved.

- Limitations
- A bounded negative result from the sources actually inspected, not proof of no asbestos. No hull-level RG 19 file, shipyard work package, survey, or complete litigation index was examined. CourtListener requests were pacing-blocked at drafting time, so this finding makes no litigation-negative claim.
