    Limitations
Ship-specific official history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS narrative ends in 1970 - it does not cover the 1 September 1971 decommissioning, 1975 strike, or the commercial/disposal chain. The National Archives carries a digitized run of ship-titled monthly deck logs for Pitkin County (LST-1082) beginning August 1966 (post-recommissioning) and running at least through December 1970 - the full documented Vietnam commission. Spot verification this session: the December 1970 log's title page (downloaded and OCR-read) is the NAVPERS 3100/1 'LOG BOOK OF THE PITKIN COUNTY LST-1082', Seventh Fleet, commencing 1 December 1970 at Binh Thuy, Republic of Vietnam, ending 31 December 1970 at Vung Tau, Republic of Vietnam - confirming ship-titled coverage of the in-country Market Time period. The catalog surfaces ~455 file units under 'Pitkin County' + 'LST-1082', the great majority being this monthly deck-log run (representative NAIDs: 220763161 Aug 1966; 220763355 Nov 1966; 176086031 May 1967; 176087099 Sep 1968; 176087827 Aug 1969; 220763807 Jun 1970; 220764065 Oct 1970).

    Limitations
Deck logs are underway/position/administrative logs - they fix the ship's location and status day by day but do not itemize materials or asbestos content; none read end-to-end this session beyond the Dec 1970 title page. Coverage begins Aug 1966: pre-1971 logs may extend further but no ship-titled 1971 unit was surfaced in the fuzzy catalog ordering; WWII (1945-46) and Korea-era (1950-55) ship-titled logs and war diaries did not surface as digitized ship-titled units. The Blue Water Navy digitization was done for VA claim support (Agent Orange era exposure verification), which is why this hull's post-recommissioning logs are the digitized run.

    Finding
The ship's own welcome-aboard pamphlet (all 4 pages OCR-read this session) documents: Pitkin County as a Landing Ship Squadron THREE unit engaged in Vietnam river/coastal support and 'redeployment lifts to OKINAWA'; crewed by 'nine officers and some one-hundred enlisted men'; armed with two twin 40mm mounts, four single 40mm mounts, and numerous .50/.30-caliber machine guns; characteristics block gives 8 officers / 89 enlisted, 3,650 tons at normal draft, 328 ft, 50.5 ft beam. The history section records construction by American Bridge Co., Ambridge; commissioning at New Orleans 7 February 1945; WWII landings at Okinawa and in the Marianas; Korea landings at Ulsan, Pusan, Kunsan, and Inchon; and recommissioning 9 July 1966. It states: 'It wasn't until 8 JUNE 1955 that she was renamed USS PITKIN COUNTY (LST-1082)' - a naming date that conflicts with the 1 July 1955 date carried by NavSource and the standard county-naming convention (see correction row).

    Finding
The 11 January 1945 orders (4 pages, OCR-read this session) detach the nucleus crew (Crew #4777) from Amphibious Training Command, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and direct Lt. John B. Cameron, USNR, to take charge of the listed enlisted personnel, proceed to Pittsburgh, report to the Naval Barracks at Carnegie Institute of Technology, then to 'the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, American Bridge Co., Ambridge, Pa., for duty in connection with fitting out of LST 1082 and duty onboard when commissioned' - naming the officer slate (Cameron CO; Lt(jg) Clare K. Martinson XO; Ensigns Ohlson, Meador, Frank, Martin) with the full enlisted muster appended. The Cameron family notes (2002 memoir of the first CO, 2 pages, text-extracted) corroborate the DANFS narrative from the deck-plate level: ferry down the Ohio/Mississippi, New Orleans commissioning, Panama City shakedown, pontoon strings delivered to Okinawa, smoke-screen anchorage, Pearl Harbor drydock when the war ended, Philippine/Sasebo occupation lifts, and arrival San Francisco 16 January 1946.

    Limitations
Period orders are a primary personnel document; the memoir is a postwar family-compiled account (2002) - it corroborates DANFS but is not authoritative where it differs (it renders Astoria as 'California' and the decommissioning as 5 August 1946, matching DANFS). Neither document mentions asbestos or materials; the orders establish that the nucleus crew was present at the builder's yard for fitting out.

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design series ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944-45 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings - and this hull's documented repair/refit history is unusually heavy for the type: post-launch alterations at Mobile (1945); floating drydock #2 at Pearl Harbor (August 1945); repairs at Kobe (March-April 1951); a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard fit-out (late 1950); a Mare Island Naval Shipyard overhaul (through October 1953); and a Long Beach Naval Shipyard recommissioning after ~11 years in reserve (July 1966) - all inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era.

    Finding
GAO documents the Navy's asbestos era and controls: thermal-insulation product specifications were changed in 1973 to specify asbestos-free materials, but already-purchased asbestos continued into ships 'as late as May 1978'; the Navy's October 1975 policy removed only damaged insulation; 'about $2 billion' was the estimated fleet-wide removal cost the Navy declined to undertake; 30-50% of shipboard asbestos insulation 'normally remains untouched' over a ship's life; and 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables.' GAO's fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards - Long Beach is this hull's documented 1966 recommissioning yard. The report's asbestos-control findings describe OPNAVINST 6260.1 (1974, rev. 1978) programs; this hull left Navy custody before those programs could apply to her.

The strongest ship-specific primary records are operational (the digitized deck-log run) and documentary (crew orders, welcome-aboard pamphlet); none read names asbestos. The single CourtListener asbestos-docket hit (Jacob v. PLENCO, D. Guam) is a pleading-stage mention, not a finding. The hull's documented history is nonetheless yard-heavy for the type - builder fitting-out at Ambridge, Mobile alterations, Pearl Harbor floating drydock, Kobe repairs, Puget Sound NSY fit-out, Mare Island NSY overhaul, Long Beach NSY recommissioning, a 1975-76 commercial conversion at Marine Industries Tacoma, and breaking at Gadani Beach 1988.

    Finding
Archival leads not pursued to box level: (a) the digitized deck-log run itself - ~60 monthly file units Aug 1966 through at least Dec 1970 - is the load-bearing primary archive for the Vietnam commission; individual months can fix overhaul windows, port calls, and yard periods day-by-day. (b) COM LST GR 95 war diaries (Feb-Jun 1945, NAIDs 101715404, 101715345, 83534074, 77605767) cover the parent unit during the hull's Okinawa period - no ship-titled LST-1082 war diary was surfaced. (c) RG 181 naval-district yard records and Mare Island/Long Beach/Puget Sound overhaul work packages would carry the material scope of the 1950/1953/1966 availabilities - the single most promising track for ship-specific material evidence. (d) DRMS disposal file for the December 1975 sale and the Marine Industries commercial-conversion contract are open leads for late-life material condition.

    Limitations
Archival-lead row: deck-log months beyond the Dec 1970 title page were not read; the COM LST GR 95 diaries and any 1971 deck-log months were enumerated, not read. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.

  12. [12]Source conflicts logged: DANFS vs NavSource on 1946 decommissioning and Korea star count; ship pamphlet vs standard convention on the naming date; class-designation variants across DANFS header, NavSource, and BuShips groupings [other_primary]

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Four source discrepancies resolved or logged: (a) First decommissioning - DANFS '5 August 1946' vs NavSource '7 August 1946' (its CO table also ends LTjg Vosatka 7 Aug); DANFS adopted as primary, conflict disclosed. (b) Korea battle stars - DANFS 'four' vs NavSource 'three' (NavSource's own campaign table enumerates three campaigns); both carried, conflict disclosed. (c) Renaming - NavSource 1 July 1955 (the Navy-wide county-naming effective date) vs the ship's own c.1969-70 pamphlet's '8 JUNE 1955'; 1 July 1955 adopted, pamphlet claim logged. (d) Class designation - DANFS stats block reads 'cl. LST-511', NavSource assigns 'LST-542 Class', and the BuShips design grouping for this hull is LST1081-1152; 'LST-542 class' is carried as the operative attribution per the house class profile, with the variant designations disclosed.

    Limitations
None of the conflicts affects identity, service narrative, or the asbestos finding. The LST-511/LST-542 difference is a naming-convention artifact (DANFS stats block vs NavSource/BuShips conventions), not a design dispute about this hull.
