Todd/Seattle-Tacoma construction trades 1943-44 (Seattle); wartime and Korean-era crew (design complement 329); Portland overhaul yard workers 1945 (facility unnamed)
    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, construction, service, and reserve lay-up - not materials or asbestos content. The entry was written while the ship lay in reserve (ends c.1970) and therefore contains no striking or disposal data; post-1970 events come from secondary indexes (ev-02). Mirror verification used because the live NHHC page serves 404.

    Finding
Post-1970 disposition record for this hull (outside DANFS coverage): stricken 1 October 1972; sold 21 March 1974 and broken up for scrap. Building data: built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding, Seattle, WA (yard number YN 27); contract awarded 4 August 1942 (NOBs-315); machinery listed as 60,000 shp Westinghouse turbines, two screws; speed 38 knots; crew 273. Commanding-officer list spans CDR Howard Riche Prince (24 June 1944) through CDR William John Schlacks Jr. (to 10 August 1953). Stricken/sold figures are consistent across NavSource, the NavalCoverMuseum designations page, and the ub88.org Fletcher-class identification table.

Reserve-fleet caretakers (Charleston 1946-51, Norfolk 1953-72); 1974 scrapping workers (buyer unidentified)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation, not a primary government record - the NVR excludes pre-1987 disposals and the MARAD vessel-history database does not carry this naval-combatant hull, so the strike/sale dates rest on secondary indexes that are mutually consistent but unverified against a primary disposal document. The scrapping buyer/yard is not named in any located source. 'Westinghouse turbines' conflicts with the BuShips 1945 class design entry (GE sets) - carried as NavSource's figure with class-standard GE noted in propulsion_summary.

    Finding type

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Fletcher-class destroyer built 1943-44 with a four-boiler high-pressure steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings - the Navy's documented asbestos era per GAO HRD-80-2. Builder-yard context: the hull was built at Todd's Seattle yard (Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., YN 27); the Atlas todd-shipyards record documents yard-level asbestos litigation against Todd's Seattle-area operations (Herring v. Texaco, Wash. 2007). Yard-event context: the 1945 overhaul at Portland, Oreg. (facility unnamed in DANFS) sits in the same pre-substitution era. NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no source names asbestos aboard this hull. Yard-level documentation (Herring; dataset yard records) documents conditions at the yards, not material installed aboard DD-800. The Portland overhaul yard is unidentified, so no yard-level record can be attached to it. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

    Finding
Program-level context: the GAO documented the Navy's extensive use of asbestos insulation aboard ships and in shipyards, with material substitution not beginning until the early 1970s. DD-800's entire active life (construction 1943-44; commissioned 1944-46 and 1951-53) precedes substitution, and the hull was stricken 1972 and scrapped 1974 - inside the same era window.

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos MATERIAL record located for DD-800: no asbestos survey, abatement contract or work package, hazmat disclosure, or material inventory naming this hull was found in the public sources searched, and no court record naming this hull in a qualifying asbestos matter was located (see ev-06 for the litigation sweep). The hull was sold for scrap in 1974 - predating demolition-era asbestos environmental regulation and decades before museum-hull hazmat-disclosure practice - so no U.S. museum/abatement channel or demolition-era environmental record exists to check.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44 steam destroyer is era-consistent with asbestos insulation. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility for any person.

Selleneit (N.M.C.C.A., filed 2026-03-17, docket 202400185), a court-martial appeal of an Aegis fire-controlman sentenced to restriction aboard USS Porter - verified via the JAG opinion PDF; the only commissioned Porter since 1999 is DDG-78: name collision/other litigation, not asbestos. 'USS Porter' dockets - 5 hits (3 unique): Volts Shipping Navigation S.A. v. United States (S.D.N.Y. 2014, the DDG-78/M.V. Otowasan Strait of Hormuz collision litigation), United States v. Butler (S.D. Fla. 2025, criminal), United States v. Burke (D.D.C. 2024, criminal) - all other litigation/name collisions. 'U.S.S. Porter' - 0 opinions; 1 docket, L3Harris Maritime Services v. BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair (E.D. Va. 2023, modern Navy repair dispute - DDG-78 context): name collision. 'DD-800' - 0 opinions; 20 docket hits, every one inspected by case identity and classified a name collision (pharma MDLs, bankruptcies, patent, prisoner and civil matters where 'DD-800' is a document/model/citation fragment - none concern the ship or asbestos). 'aboard the Porter' - 0 opinions. 'Porter asbestos' - 1,584 opinion hits dominated by surname/company collisions (H.K. Porter Co. Asbestos Trust and Porter Hayden Co. lines of cases); no ship-context reference surfaced in ranked results. Net: no opinion or indexed docket names DD-800 in a qualifying asbestos matter.

CourtListener covers federal courts and RECAP-indexed state filings; state trial-court pleading collections (e.g., NY Supreme Court, LA Parish) are largely outside its index, so a negative result does not rule out unindexed state-court litigation. 'Porter' is a high-collision term (common surname plus five Navy hulls named Porter); classifications documented per query in the ledger. Sweep reflects index state at 2026-09-27.
