- PDF page 50, LST-678 row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The National Archives Special List 44 identifies LST-678 in the ship-number logbook index, with a date range of 10 July 1944 to 28 February 1945. This is an archival locator for deck-log research, not a finding about asbestos or exposure.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- National Archives guidance states that documenting asbestos aboard a particular U.S. naval vessel requires ship-specific research and identifies Navy engineering drawings arranged by hull number and ship-material group as a principal record series. A CDC/NIOSH maritime health-hazard report states that exposed insulation on 1940s ships was assumed asbestos-containing because Navy shipyards used large amounts of asbestos as a building material. Together these sources support only class/era research context, not a Presque Isle finding.

- Limitations
- These are research guidance and era/context sources, not records naming LST-678 or APB-44. They do not establish that asbestos was installed aboard this hull, its quantity, condition, removal history, present-day presence, individual exposure, or causation.

[5]Batch-7203 research ledger: NHHC/DANFS, NARA, GAO/Navy asbestos guidance, and CourtListener helper searches [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-presque-isle-lst678-01 through sl-uss-presque-isle-lst678-09
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the authoritative sources searched: no hull-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, engineering-material disclosure, or public government record naming asbestos aboard LST-678/APB-44 was found. The completed exact-hull opinion search returned no qualifying asbestos-litigation result; exact-name searches and the exact-hull docket search remained incomplete because of the fleet helper's pacing/queue behavior and were not upgraded to no-result findings.

- Limitations
- A negative public-source search does not prove absence of asbestos aboard the hull and does not defeat any exposure claim. The record remains class/era context only. CourtListener search completion was limited by the helper queue; see the report gap.

- Finding
- LST-678 was laid down 29 April 1944 by American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, launched 16 June 1944, and commissioned 30 June 1944. The DANFS entry gives 4,080 tons full-load displacement, 328-foot length, 50-foot beam, 14-foot 1-inch draft, 11.6-knot speed, and a complement of 119; it identifies the hull as LST-511 class in the entry's class field.

- Finding
- The single hull was named Presque Isle (APB-44) on 31 March 1945. It supported the Iwo Jima campaign from 22 February to 3 March, participated in a diversionary landing at Okinawa on 1 April, rescued 188 men from LST-884 after a kamikaze hit, then performed tender, housing, and supply duties. It departed Okinawa on 8 July and spent the remainder of the war at San Pedro and Subic Bays in the Philippines.
