Laid down 24 August 1943 by Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, Tex.; launched 30 October 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Ray P. Reynolds; commissioned 12 January 1944, Lt. Comdr. J. W. Higgins, Jr., USNR. Bermuda shakedown; Norfolk convoy escort from 23 March 1944; night of 11 April German air attack left Holder (DE-401) torpedoed and dead in the water - Price shot down one plane and escorted Holder, towed by HMS Mindful, into Algiers, then Bizerte; a return convoy and two further Bizerte convoys; detached from TF 65 on 28 September with Escort Division 58 to TG 21.7 North Atlantic convoys - five round-trip Atlantic convoys by 29 May 1945. Limitations
DANFS documents identity, service history, and specifications, not materials or asbestos content - the narrative contains no asbestos-related content whatsoever. The bracketed post-1970 disposition line (stricken 1 August 1974; sold 12 March 1975) is attributed in the transcription to Bauer & Roberts, Register of Ships of the U.S. Navy 1775-1990, p.225, not the DANFS entry proper. Live NHHC page returns 404 (standing link rot, BATCH-01); the archive.org GPO print scan controls; ibiblio and hazegray transcriptions concur. DANFS says 'recommissioned at New York' without naming the conversion yard - the New York Naval Shipyard attribution rests on NavSource (ev-02).

A primary ship-authored document survives for this hull: the commanding officer's 4 October 1945 submission to the Secretary of the Navy transmitting the ship's war history ('The History of the U.S.S. Price'), narrating construction at Orange, Tex., the 12 January 1944 commissioning, Bermuda shakedown, Mediterranean and North Atlantic convoy escort, the 11 April 1944 Holder assistance, the Pacific transfer, and occupation duty at Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima - ship-authentic operational detail corroborating the DANFS narrative.

Single-page scan image reviewed at available resolution; it is an operational history, not a materials document - no asbestos or construction-materials content is present. It corroborates dates and movements rather than adding exposure information. The parent record for this document is NHHC's WWII war-histories collection (NavSource hosts the scan).

    Finding
Era/design inference: DE-332 sits in the Consolidated Steel production block (DE-316 through DE-338) of the 85-hull Edsall/FMR class. The FMR plant is 4 Fairbanks-Morse Mod. 38D8-1/8 geared diesel engines + 4 diesel-generators, 6,000 shp, 2 screws, 21 kt - a diesel design with no boilers or steam system. A Consolidated Steel-built diesel escort completed in early 1944 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to that plant: exhaust-system insulation and lagging, gaskets and packing throughout engineering spaces, electrical insulation, brake linings on winch/windlass equipment, fireproofing, and deck coverings - not boiler or steam-line lagging. The 1955-56 radar-picket conversion at the New York Naval Shipyard (Atlas record 'brooklyn-navy-yard') is a documented yard event at a documented asbestos-era facility; its asbestos scope is inference.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The diesel plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line insulation) do not apply. No materials schedule for this hull was located; the builder yard is absent from the Atlas dataset (gap). Does not quantify material, does not establish that any specific product was or was not installed aboard this hull, and does not establish any individual's exposure.

Documented asbestos aboard a preserved Edsall-class sister hull: after a U.S. Navy inspection recommended an asbestos survey for the Seawolf Park vessels, contractor Separation Systems Consultants was approved to proceed with abatement of asbestos found in the public areas of USS Stewart (DE-238) and USS Cavalla (SS-244), and the museum operator's audited statements later recorded the Stewart mitigation as a completed restoration item. Edsall-class design sister of DE-332 - corroborates that the class's era construction included asbestos, without documenting this hull.

The only documentation bearing on asbestos aboard this hull is class/era inference (Edsall-class FMR diesel design; sister-hull Stewart abatement) and the documented 1955-56 conversion at an asbestos-era Navy yard (New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era materials would have been standard at build, and the DER conversion is the kind of major refit in which era insulation was both disturbed and installed; it means no source located documents them for this hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. NARA RG 24 deck logs (1944-1960), RG 19 BuShips construction records / any DE-332 General Information Book, and the New York Naval Shipyard DER-conversion work packages remain unsurveyed archival leads.
