- Finding
- Documented for this hull: 'The second Racer (IX-100) was laid down as PC-501 by Seabrook Yacht Corp., Houston, Tex.; launched 24 January 1942; changed to SC-501 8 April 1943; acquired by the Navy from the Coast Guard 9 April 1943; changed to IX-100 21 April 1943; named Racer 3 May 1943; and placed in service 27 May 1943.' Originally attached to the 14th Naval District for fleet use, wooden-hulled Racer was reassigned to ServRon 2 and 'for the remainder of her career operated under the direction of the Antisubmarine Warfare Unit Sound School, Pearl Harbor.' Placed out of service 21 May 1946; struck from the Navy list 5 June 1946; sold 20 December 1946 to Charles Marramore of Honolulu. DANFS spec block: displacement 114; length 110'10"; beam 17'0"; draft 5'8"; complement 28; armament 1 x 40mm.

- Finding
- NavSource documents the same designation chain plus: 'Completed in April 1942'; call sign NZRG; and dual USCG/USN service flags for SC-501. SC-501 specifications: 148 t., 111' x 17' x 6'6", 15.6 kts, complement 28, one 40mm mount + two .50 cal MG + two Y-gun DC projectors + two DC tracks; propulsion 'Two 800bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.' Critically, the Racer (IX-100) specification block lists 'Propulsion: Non self-propelled' - the propulsion plant was removed in IX configuration.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its dates and specs generally track NVR/DANFS but the 'Non self-propelled' Racer spec rests on NavSource alone among consulted sources (consistent with DANFS IX spec block listing no propulsion figure). Speed (15.6 kts) is the as-built 8-268A figure vs the 21-kts class design speed for 16-184A-engined boats. Contains no asbestos content.

[4]Designation cross-check: DANFS 'laid down as PC-501' + NavSource 'SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser' + HyperWar USN ship lists (SC-501 -> IX-100 Racer; SC-497 through SC-508 all carried ex-PC designations) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: any cataloging of this hull as PC-461 class is wrong. She was laid down under the designation PC-501 but built to the SC-497-class design - a 110-foot wooden-hulled submarine chaser - not the 173-foot steel PC-461-class patrol craft. The initial PC numbering was class-wide, not a one-off: SC-497 through SC-508 were all laid down under PC designations (NavSource SC photo index lists each as 'ex-PC-49x/50x'; HyperWar's SC list records the same). She was never a PC-461-class vessel at any point in her career.

[5]National Archives, 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' (NARA research guide, verified live 2026-10-03) [other_primary]

- NARA guided topic, 'Beginning Research' and RG 19 correspondence sections; NavSource 12/010501.htm spec blocks (diesel plant; non self-propelled IX-100)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The National Archives' own guidance frames asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel 1941-1961 - this hull's entire build-and-service window - as an established research topic, and directs hull-level documentation to Bureau of Ships (RG 19) correspondence filed by hull designation and shipyard contractor code. Era-typical applications aboard small diesel auxiliaries of 1941-42 construction were engine exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, and electrical insulation. For this hull the inference is bounded: wooden hull, diesel plant (no boilers or steam lagging pathways), and a non-propelled IX configuration after April 1943 removing propulsion machinery entirely.

- Seabrook Yacht construction trades (1941-42); USCG crew (1942-43); USN crew/Sound School personnel (1943-46)
- Limitations
- Era/class-level inference only - the NARA guide does not name this hull or the SC-497 class, and no SC-497-class materials list or hull-specific insulation record was located. Names era-standard application types, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. The non-propelled IX-100 configuration (NavSource) bounds any machinery-related pathway to the 1942-43 SC-501 period plus construction and any yard availabilities.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Hull-specific material documentation, if it exists, would sit in undigitized NARA series: RG 19 Bureau of Ships General Correspondence filed under this hull's designations (PC501/SC501/IX100 and SC497-class code) plus Seabrook Yacht Corp. contractor correspondence (QM code); deck logs for PC-501/SC-501/IX-100 (RG 24) covering 1942-46; and USCG muster rolls for the Coast Guard-manned period (RG 26 Entry 108A, 1942 boxes 433-501 per USCG Historian's finding aid). A catalog.archives.gov search on 'SC-501' returns 267 archival descriptions - overwhelmingly textual records in which the hull is mentioned, not ship-specific material files.

App. 2017) - qualifying asbestos litigation but the vessel was USS Haynsworth (DD-700); (2) Spearman v. United States, 690 F. Supp. 1435 (E.D. Pa. 1988) - shipyard injury aboard USS Independence (CV-62); (3) Cobb v. United States, 471 F. Supp. 102 (M.D. Fla. 1979) - civilian guest injured aboard USS Meredith (DD-890); (4) Bullis v. Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp., 474 F.2d 392 (9th Cir. 1973) - Jones Act status of film extras aboard a Nevada/Arizona mock-up built on three barges at Pearl Harbor; (5) Albert Merlino v. United States Steel Corp., 52 F.3d 326 (6th Cir. 1995, unpublished) - 'USS' = U.S. Steel, a steelworker case.

[8]Batch-7876 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS (live); NavSource x2 (live); HyperWar SC/IX lists; NARA asbestos guided topic + catalog; CourtListener (see ledger rows); NVR check; secondary web sweep; USCG Historian muster-roll finding aid [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-racer-pc501-01 through sl-uss-racer-pc501-13
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming this hull under PC-501, SC-501, IX-100, or Racer was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying material - unlike larger vessels, this hull does not appear even on law-firm marketing ship lists (the searches returned only DANFS/NavSource/HyperWar mirrors and class compilations).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-typical insulation materials are consistent with her 1941-42 construction. Hull-specific resolution would require the undigitized RG 19/RG 24/RG 26 series noted in ev-05. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
