- Finding
- Redhead deployed to Korea 12 July 1950 (Task Force 95, Mine Division units), including minesweeping off Kunsan with USS Pledge (AM-277), USS Mockingbird (AMS-27), USS Chatterer (AMS-40), and USS Kite (AMS-22). Present during the Wonsan Harbor mine-clearance operation in October 1950, in which USS Pirate (AM-275) and USS Pledge (AM-277) both struck mines and sank on 12 October 1950 off Sin-do under enemy shore-battery fire; Redhead assisted in rescue of survivors. Redhead received the Presidential Unit Citation for operations against enemy forces in Korea, 11-24 October 1950. Continued minesweeping/patrol duty off Korea through the July 1953 armistice and into 1954.

Documents combat/rescue history and a unit award only - contains no asbestos information and does not establish any asbestos-related condition aboard.

- Finding
- NARA's standing research guide "Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961" states that use of asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941-1961 is a frequently requested research topic, and identifies minesweepers (along with battleships, cruisers, carriers, destroyers, destroyer escorts, frigates, submarines, amphibious vessels, minelayers, patrol craft, and other auxiliaries) as a vessel category with relevant holdings: RG 19 (Bureau of Ships correspondence, specifications, ship drawings, 1940-1961), RG 38 (Chief of Naval Operations / Board of Inspection and Survey reports), and RG 143 (Bureau of Supplies and Accounts specification indices). The guide frames research as determining whether a particular named hull has or does not have asbestos material aboard - not as a blanket statement that all ships of a type contained asbestos.

- 1941-1961 (records coverage window; not ship-specific)
- Limitations
- Fleet-wide archival finding aid, not a ship-specific or class-specific asbestos finding. Does not name this hull, does not establish that YMS-1-class minesweepers or this vessel in particular contained asbestos, and explicitly treats asbestos presence as a hull-by-hull question requiring further primary-source (RG 19/38/143) research that was not performed in this batch. Carried as an archival lead only - not used to support any ship-specific or class-level asbestos claim in this record.

[4]Batch-1724 search ledger (this record): CourtListener API v4, queries "USS Redhead" asbestos; "AMS-34" asbestos; "YMS-443" asbestos; "MHC-48" Redhead asbestos; Redhead minesweeper asbestos; "YMS-443" OR "MHC-48" OR "AMCU-48"; "YMS-1 class" minesweeper asbestos (opinion + RECAP, run 2026-09-24) [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-redhead-ams34-01 through sl-uss-redhead-ams34-07
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this vessel under any of its designations (USS Redhead, AMS-34, YMS-443, AMCU-48, MHC-48) was located in CourtListener opinions (type=o) or RECAP dockets (type=r) as of 2026-09-24. Combined hull-number + "asbestos" queries returned zero results across all five designations. A broader "Redhead minesweeper asbestos" RECAP query returned one hit, The New York Times Co. v. Microsoft Corp. (S.D.N.Y., 1:23-cv-11195) - reviewed and excluded as a name collision: the match is an incidental occurrence of the word "Redhead" inside a multi-thousand-page copyright exhibit (a news-archive index), unrelated to this ship or to asbestos.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located docket or opinion does not prove no litigation exists - CourtListener's opinion index is incomplete for unpublished/state-court and older sealed matters, and a claim could exist under a plaintiff's name not searchable by hull designation alone. Does not establish that this vessel is or is not named in any asbestos claim; reported as a negative finding, not evidence of no exposure.

- Live NHHC page returned HTTP 503 on every access attempt in this session (2026-09-24), including the bare site root, indicating a site-wide outage rather than a single dead link. Content corroborated via a direct search-engine excerpt of the DANFS text and via Wikipedia's USS Redhead (AMS-34) article, which states it incorporates DANFS text and agrees on every checked date and event; not independently re-verified against the live primary document this session.
