Opinion text, Ametek/S&K replacement-parts discussion at 40-41 (Doc. No. 783, filed 2013-11-26); invoice recital citing Doc. No. 713-8, Pls.' Ex. 6
    Finding type
    litigation_product_id
    Finding
Summary-judgment opinion recites that plaintiffs offered 'an invoice establishing that PHNS [Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard] ordered from S&K a rotameter with asbestos gaskets for the USS Reeves' (Doc. No. 713-8, Pls.' Ex. 6). Ametek was sued as successor-in-interest to Schutte & Koerting Company ('S&K'). Plaintiff Robert Cabasug worked as a pipefitter and nuclear engineer at PHNS 1973-2006 and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2012. The court GRANTED Ametek's motion for summary judgment (Doc. No. 676): plaintiffs never asserted that Cabasug worked on rotameters, so the exhibit could not raise a genuine issue of exposure to S&K parts.

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard pipefitter/nuclear engineer 1973-2006; mesothelioma
    Limitations
Discovery/MSJ-stage recital of an invoice exhibit: identifies an asbestos-gasketed component ordered for this hull, but documents ordering only - not delivery, installation, or individual exposure. The claim against Ametek/S&K was resolved by defense summary judgment, a merits-level negative for that plaintiff, not an exposure finding. Attribution: the only USS Reeves extant during Cabasug's 1973-2006 PHNS employment is DLG-24/CG-24 (DE-156/APD-52 decommissioned 1946, stricken and transferred to Ecuador 1960). Does not quantify material aboard, establish causation, or address present-day conditions (hull sunk 2001).

    Finding
Defence releases document the pre-disposal preparation and sinking of this hull: the ex-USS Reeves hulk spent several months berthed at Newcastle, New South Wales, where it was 'stripped of all weapons and cleaned of hazardous substances, then assessed by Environment Australia to confirm suitability for disposal at sea,' following 'months of planning, including careful environmental analysis through Australian and US environmental certification procedures.' On 31 May 2001 RAAF F/A-18s scored two direct Mk-82 500-lb bomb hits; the ~6,000-tonne hulk sank about 30 minutes later (~12:30pm AEST), approximately 170 nautical miles east of Fraser Island in about 12,000 ft of water, ending the month-long combined Tandem Thrust 2001 exercise.

    Finding
The ship's own 1993 command history records the inactivation: under Commander Carrier Group 7 until 31 August 1993 then COMNAVSURFGRU Middle Pacific; operational control to COMNAVSURFPAC (TG 15.4) on commencing pre-inactivation availability 11 September 1993; equipment and CIC removal beginning late July; weapons offload at Naval Magazine Lualualei 8-10 September; fuel offload; pre-inactivation availability with SIMA Pearl Harbor; decommissioning ceremony 12 November 1993. A near-complete run of command histories (1964, 1967, 1971-1993) is scanned on the same site; the 1988 CHR confirms the 1969 decommissioning for the AAW electronics package, recommissioning 29 August 1970, redesignation as CG-24 on 1 July 1975, and Yokosuka OFRP homeporting.

Association host is not itself an authoritative source; originals reside at NHHC/NARA (not independently retrieved).

    Finding type
    regulatory
    Finding
The Navy SINKEX program under which ex-Reeves was sunk operated under EPA's MPRSA general permit at 40 C.F.R. 229.2, requiring that before sinking, qualified personnel remove to the maximum extent practicable all materials which may degrade the marine environment - including emptying and flushing fuel tanks/lines essentially free of petroleum and removing other pollutants and readily detachable material capable of creating debris or contributing to chemical pollution; EPA's 1999 interpretive letter adds PCB inventory and removal requirements reported annually to EPA.

    Limitations
Program-level permit framework, not a hull record - the cited permit text enumerates petroleum, PCBs, and detachable debris; asbestos is not a named category. Confirms a regulated cleaning regime applied to target vessels generally; does not establish what was removed from ex-Reeves specifically (ship-specific cleaning is documented only by the Defence release, ev-04).

    Finding
As built (1960-64), this hull's steam propulsion plant and associated high-pressure steam piping were insulated under early-1960s Navy construction practice; era-typical applications include boiler and turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Disturbance events: 1969-70 Bath Iron Works AAW modernization and 1993 pre-inactivation availability.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos exposure adjudication, hull ACM survey, or abatement record located. CourtListener: 'USS Reeves' opinion search returned one qualifying hit (Cabasug - a product-identification invoice recital ending in a defense summary-judgment win, not an exposure finding); 'CG-24' hits are identifier collisions; 'DLG-24' opinion and 'USS Reeves' RECAP docket sweeps could not be completed under fleet pacing limits (see search_ledger). No asbestos-specific result found for this hull's Newcastle pre-sinking preparation beyond the general 'hazardous substances' language.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1960-64 steam plant is era-consistent with ACM, and the one located invoice recital confirms asbestos-gasketed parts were ordered for the hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
