- Finding
- DANFS identifies the second Reid (DD-292) as a Clemson-class destroyer laid down by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Squantum, Mass., 9 September 1919; launched 15 October 1919, sponsored by Mrs. Joseph W. Powell; commissioned 3 December 1919, Lt. Comdr. V. D. Chapline in command. Service: Squadron 3, Atlantic Fleet; shakedown off Cuba February 1920; east-coast operations out of Charleston, Newport, and Yorktown ~1920-1923 with inactive periods at Charleston due to personnel cuts; Guantanamo and Canal Zone maneuvers January-February 1923; European duty 1924-1925 (Cherbourg 28 June 1924, Light Cruiser Squadron, Baltic/North Sea ports, aircraft patrols off Iceland mid-August, Mediterranean September 1924-May 1925); overhaul at Philadelphia December 1925; Scouting Fleet 1925-1929; second Nicaraguan campaign 24 April-12 June 1927. Designated for inactivation 1929; last cruise ended Philadelphia 30 August 1929; decommissioned there 1 May 1930; stricken 22 October 1930; sold for scrapping to Boston Iron & Metal Co., Baltimore, Md., 17 January 1931. Specification block: 1,215 tons normal, 314'4" x 31'8" x 9'10", 34 knots, complement 122, class Clemson.

- Limitations
- Ship history and specification source only. Contains no asbestos, material, or exposure information. Yard periods (Philadelphia overhaul December 1925; Charleston inactivity periods) are operational facts, not evidence of asbestos work. Complement 122 is the DANFS design figure, not a verified crew roster; NavSource lists 114.

- Finding
- Corrects two metadata defects. (1) Class: incoming metadata carried class 'Hopkins'; the DANFS specification block expressly states 'class Clemson' - Clemson is the verified class. (2) Hull identity: NavSource building data for DD-292 notes 'paper work problem assigned the name to DD-224-291-292,' and a secondary compilation (historyofwar.org) gives the sequence - DD-292 was assigned the name Stewart on 7 October 1919, renamed Reid on 9 October; the Stewart name had moved from DD-216 (renamed John D. Edwards) and then went to DD-291 (renamed Converse) before settling on DD-224. The paper name shuffle does not create a second hull: DD-292 is one vessel, launched and commissioned as Reid. NavSource also records machinery 26,500 shp geared turbines on 2 screws, 35 knots, crew 114, and a block-buy sale to Boston Metals, Baltimore, at $5,789 each.

- Limitations
- Secondary compilations, not primary Navy correspondence; the name-assignment dates (7-9 October 1919) are not independently verified against a Secretary of the Navy naming letter. The Clemson classification itself is verified by DANFS (ev-01). NavSource's terse note does not specify which name bounced; the detailed sequence is from historyofwar.org. Neither source contains asbestos information.

[4]National Archives, Special List 44, Named Vessels, Reid (DD-292) entries [other_primary]
- Locator
- Special List 44 alphabetical table, Reid (DD-292) rows
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 (Named Vessels) lists deck logs for Reid (DD-292) spanning 3 December 1919 to 1 May 1930, matching the ship's commissioned service exactly. A second inventory row for Reid (DD-292) carries a span of 3 December 1909 to 3 July 1919, predating construction - anomalous and unverified.

- Limitations
- An inventory entry, not a review of the logs. NARA states deck logs do not directly document asbestos materials; they could date periods of work if examined. The anomalous 1909-1919 row predates the hull's laying down and may be a cataloging artifact; its contents are unverified.

- Finding
- NARA's asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 Entry P 9, Destroyer/Destroyer Escort/Frigate General Information Books (1907-1961), ship engineering drawings arranged by hull number including S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping where present, and specification files as paths to hull-level material documentation. The guide states deck logs and muster rolls do not directly document asbestos. No DD-292 GIB, drawing, or specification was obtained for this batch.

- Limitations
- A guide to record series, not a DD-292 record or a finding of asbestos aboard the ship. Series dates span the hull's 1919-1930 service, but holdings and contents for DD-292 specifically require archival confirmation.

[6]Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Ships' Technical Manual chapter 050, 'Readiness and Care of Inactive Ships,' revision 3 (1 May 2005), section 050-7.2.7 'Handling and Removal of Asbestos Materials' [other_primary]

- NSTM 050 section 050-7.2.7

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NAVSEA's Naval Ships' Technical Manual chapter 050 (Readiness and Care of Inactive Ships, rev. 3, 1 May 2005), section 050-7.2.7, states that asbestos was used extensively in past Navy shipbuilding programs for installations including thermal insulation and deck tile. This is a general fleet-level statement about earlier construction eras; it does not name DD-292, the Clemson class, or any 1919-1930 installation.

- Published 75 years after DD-292 was scrapped and not specific to the Clemson class or this ship's service years. It cannot establish that asbestos was installed or encountered on DD-292, identify a product, or support an exposure or causation claim.

- Finding
- Scoped negative finding: the reviewed sources - DANFS (verbatim entry), NavSource building data, NARA Special List 44 deck-log inventory, NARA asbestos research guide, and NAVSEA NSTM 050 - contain no ship-specific asbestos documentation for DD-292: no survey, material specification, abatement record, or crew exposure record naming this hull. Shipboard asbestos presence, products, and any exposure remain unknown. See search_ledger; CourtListener sweep status is recorded there separately.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1919 steam-plant destroyer plausibly carried era-standard asbestos insulation, and NARA archival holdings (RG 19 Entry P 9 GIBs, S39 drawings, specifications) have not been inspected. The finding is limited to the named public sources searched.
