DANFS record for this hull: laid down 8 May 1918 by Union Iron Works, San Francisco, Calif.; launched 21 September 1918 (sponsor Mrs. Frank Johnson); commissioned 31 July 1919, Lt. Comdr. R. A. Hall; assigned Destroyer Force, Pacific Fleet, based San Diego; fleet review for the Secretary of the Navy at Monterey Bay; Hawaii cruise with Destroyer Flotilla 11 (25 March - 28 April 1920); overhaul at Puget Sound Navy Yard 16 December 1920 - 4 April 1921; radio-compass calibration for the 12th Naval District, January 1922; decommissioned 27 May 1922 at San Diego and laid up until disposal in 1936 under the London Treaty; struck from the Navy list 19 May 1936; sold 29 September 1936 to 'Sehiavone Bonomo Corp.' [sic - Schiavone Bonomo Corp.]; reduced to a hulk 2 December 1936. Specification block: dp. 1,284; l. 314'4"; b. 30'11"; dr. 9'10"; s. 33 k.; cpl. 122; a. 4 4", 1 3", 4 21" tt.; cl. Little.

Union Iron Works construction trades 1918-19; Destroyer Force crew (design complement 122); Puget Sound Navy Yard overhaul workforce 1920-21; Schiavone Bonomo scrapping workforce 1936
    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, builder, service history, and disposal - not materials or asbestos content. The transcription's 'Sehiavone Bonomo' is an OCR/typographical rendering of Schiavone Bonomo Corp. (NavSource concurs with the corrected spelling). Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command photograph of this hull underway circa 1921-1922 while serving with Destroyer Division 22; the caption notes the stern 4"/50 gun had been moved from the fantail to atop an enlarged after deckhouse - a documented in-service structural alteration on this hull during its 1919-22 commission.

  3. [3]DANFS specifications block (cl. Little; steam-era destroyer) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bethlehem Shipbuilding record (yard_family tier-3 asbestos documentation); U.S. Navy Booklet of General Plans, Wickes & Clemson classes (1919) as class-level design record [other_primary]

    Finding type

    Finding
Era/design inference: DD-176 is a Bethlehem-design ('Little' group) Wickes-class flush-deck destroyer built 1918-19 by Union Iron Works, San Francisco - Bethlehem's San Francisco plant. Destroyers of this class and construction era carried multi-boiler steam plants whose era-standard applications included asbestos in boiler and steam-line insulation/lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, packing, and deck coverings. The Atlas shipyard dataset documents asbestos products for the Bethlehem yard family at yard level (bethlehem-shipbuilding, tier 3).

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific finding. The yard-family asbestos documentation centers on the Quincy/Sparrows Point records, not the San Francisco Union plant specifically; whether DD-176's installed insulation contained asbestos is not established by any located source. Establishes no quantity and no individual exposure.

    Finding
The official 1919 Navy Booklet of General Plans for the Wickes/Clemson flush-deck classes survives (general arrangement, deck plans, midship section) and is the class-level design record; the NARA file unit 'Plans for Flush Deckers, 1789-1967' and RG 19 bureau records are the archival path for any hull-specific material specifications for DD-176.

    Limitations
Class-level general plans - do not name DD-176 specifically and carry no asbestos notation located; hull-specific material schedules would require NARA RG 19 retrieval, not performed. Archival lead only.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
DD-176's deck logs for its 1919-1922 commission (RG 24 logbooks, pre-WWII series) are held by the National Archives; the NARA digitization program has concentrated on WWII and Vietnam-era logs, so the hull's logs are an unsearched archival lead for any shipboard events bearing on later exposure questions.

    Limitations
Archival lead only - the logs were not retrieved or reviewed; the National Archives Catalog search could not be resolved programmatically during this session. Deck logs do not ordinarily record insulation materials; their value is corroborating operational context.

  6. [6]CourtListener RECAP results for 'USS Renshaw': Smith v. Crane Co., No. 1:13-cv-07411 (N.D. Ill., filed 2013-10-16, terminated 2014-12-17; NOS 368 P.I.: Asbestos) and Agena v. Cleaver-Brooks, Inc., No. 1:19-cv-00089 (D. Haw., filed 2019-02-20; NOS 470 RICO) [court_record]
    Locator
CourtListener docket 4261559 (Smith v. Crane Co., N.D. Ill. 1:13-cv-07411); docket for 1:19-cv-00089 (D. Haw.)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Two dockets match the exact string 'USS Renshaw' in indexed RECAP text. Smith v. Crane Co. (N.D. Ill. 2013) is a genuine asbestos personal-injury removal docket (NOS 368) in which a vessel named 'USS Renshaw' appears in filed-document text, almost certainly inside the complaint/exhibit vessel list - but the referent cannot be this hull: DD-176 was decommissioned in 1922 and scrapped in 1936, so no plaintiff in a 2013 asbestos PI case could have served aboard; the plausible referent is USS Renshaw (DD-499, Fletcher class, in commission 1942-1970). Agena v. Cleaver-Brooks (D. Haw. 2019) is a non-asbestos RICO case; the 'USS Renshaw' reference's role is unverified from index text and the suit does not allege asbestos injury. NON-QUALIFYING as exposure-site litigation for DD-176.

    Population
Smith plaintiff (asbestos PI; exposure window postdates this hull's existence); Agena plaintiff (RICO)
    Limitations
Docket-index match only; the complaint text naming 'USS Renshaw' in Smith was not retrieved (fleet pacing), so the reference's context (exposure vessel vs. other mention) is unresolved - but attribution to DD-176 is foreclosed by the service window regardless. Agena is non-asbestos litigation; carried only because the exact-name query returns it. Classified down per litigation-stage discipline.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull survey, abatement contract, museum or donation hazmat disclosure, or asbestos litigation naming USS Renshaw (DD-176) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1936, before asbestos litigation era; there is no extant structure to survey.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1918 steam destroyer's era makes asbestos use plausible at class level. Does not establish that asbestos is or was present aboard; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Scrapping-site exposure (Schiavone Bonomo, 1936) is outside hull-documentation scope.
