DANFS record for this hull (the entry also records that DE-91 was originally assigned the name Reynolds before transfer to the Royal Navy as HMS Halsted, November 1943 - DE-42 is the only commissioned USS Reynolds): named for Ens. Dudley Louis Reynolds (killed aboard Pensacola CA-24, Tassafaronga, 30 Nov 1942). Laid down 12 January 1943 as BDE-42 by the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Wash. (originally assigned to the United Kingdom); redesignated DE-42 on 16 June 1943; named Reynolds on 23 June 1943; launched 1 August 1943; christened by Mrs. D. L. Reynolds, widow of Ensign Reynolds; commissioned 1 November 1943, Lt. Comdr. Edward P. Adams in command. Shakedown off southern California; departed west coast 13 January 1944 for Pearl Harbor; screened White Plains (CVE-66) to Majuro and Kwajalein (February); Submarine Training Force duty into May including an ASW demonstration for Australian observers; joined TG 12.2 hunter-killer group at Eniwetok and on 28 July assisted Wyman (DE-38) in sinking I-55; TU 31.4.4 Western Garrison Force for the Palau operation; patrolled northern entrance of Kossol Passage 20 September-5 October; escorted Manus-Purvis Bay shipping 5 October-14 November; joined TG 30.8 at Ulithi 17 November and screened replenishment groups supporting TF 38/58 off the Philippines, Formosa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa for the remainder of the war; screened refueling operations in Tokyo Bay to 7 September 1945; decommissioned at Mare Island 5 December 1945; struck from the Navy list 19 December 1945; sold and delivered to Mr. John L. Key, San Francisco, on 28 April 1947. Eight battle stars. Spec block: 1,140 t; 289'5"; b. 35'1"; dr. 11'10"; s. 21 k.; cpl. 156; cl. Evarts.

    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, builder, dates, and service narrative - not materials or asbestos content. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 (standing NHHC link rot). Date conflicts with secondary sources (commissioning 1 vs 8 November; redesignation 15 vs 16 June; striking 19 vs 9 December) carried in gaps.

The ship's own end-of-war history, submitted 27 September 1945: 'The U.S.S. REYNOLDS was christened and commissioned 1 November 1943 at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington; Lieut. Comdr. Edward P. Adams, USNR, assumed command at that time' (confirms DANFS date against NavSource's 8 November). Fitting out and shakedown (at San Diego) completed 31 December 1943; departed the U.S. 13 January 1944; escorted White Plains to Tarawa/Majuro/Kwajalein/Makin, returning to Pearl Harbor 23 February; dry-docked at Pearl Harbor for sonar repairs before reporting to Commander Submarine Training Force 6 March, duty to 17 May 1944; ASW demonstration 26 May for Commander Spurgeon, Royal Australian Navy; joined TG 12.2 hunter-killer group (Hoggatt Bay, Reynolds CED-49, Lake, Donaldson, Wyman) 20 June; partial credit for 28 July I-55 kill - '1/2 Submarine (With WYMAN)', Wyman receiving major credit; Lt. Comdr. Adams relieved August 1944; TU 31.4.4; Kossol Passage patrol and one negative ASW search with Hoel (DD-533); transit of Manus amid the debris of the Mount Hood (AE-11) explosion 10 November 1944; joined TG 30.8 17 November; ASW search inside Ulithi following torpedoing of Mississinewa (AO-59); December 1944 typhoon cruise with several ships lost; screened THIRD/FIFTH Fleet fueling groups through Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa operations; at sea 67 of 72 days 4 July-15 September 1945; among Third Fleet units designated to enter Tokyo Bay for occupation. Summary items: 'star' operations participated in - Six; enemy aircraft downed - none; personnel casualties and ship damage in action - None; individual award list - None.

    Finding
Era/class inference: an Evarts-class destroyer escort built at a Navy yard in 1943 falls inside the period when naval construction used asbestos throughout - thermal insulation on engine exhausts and hot machinery, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, bulkhead fireproofing, and deck coverings are the period-standard applications. The Evarts 'GMT' type ran 4 x General Motors 16-278A diesel engines with electric drive (6,000 shp, 2 screws) - a diesel-electric plant with no boilers or steam distribution lines - so the boiler-room and steam-line insulation inference applicable to the steam DE classes (Buckley TE, John C. Butler WGT) does not transfer to this hull; asbestos relevance centers on exhaust lagging, machinery-space insulation, gaskets, electrical and deck materials.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - not a ship-specific finding; no asbestos survey, material schedule, or quantity exists for DE-42 in the public sources searched. Diesel plant lowers but does not eliminate asbestos relevance. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications not retrieved - open archival lead.

    Finding
Builder-yard documentation at yard level: the yard that built this hull January-November 1943 is documented in the peer-reviewed literature as asbestos-intensive across 1940-1965 - a window containing Reynolds's entire construction period - with documented materials including thermal insulation, gaskets, electrical systems, deck tiles, fireproofing, and refractory materials; PSNS is a listed Superfund site (EPA WA2170023418) with asbestos among site contaminants.

    Limitations
Yard-level record, not a hull record - establishes asbestos conditions at the builder during the construction window, not materials installed aboard DE-42. Quantified measurements in the cited literature center on 1962-1972 trades exposures; the 1940-1965 span is a photographic/archival review.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for this hull: no asbestos survey, abatement or remediation record, hazmat disclosure, or documented ACM inventory for DE-42 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1947 after roughly two years of service - no museum custody, no postwar overhauls, no NPS or MARAD stewardship - so the usual channels through which ship-specific asbestos documentation surfaces do not exist for this vessel.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - no original-construction material schedule was consulted (NARA RG19 'General Information Books' and PSNS construction records are the open leads). Does not establish or defeat any individual exposure or legal-eligibility claim.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation - or any litigation - naming USS Reynolds (DE-42) located in CourtListener opinion or RECAP docket indexes. The 241 'DE-42' opinion hits all resolve to PACER docket-entry citations of the form '(DE 42)' (e.g., 'Motion to Compel (DE 42)') inside unrelated civil cases; top-20-by-relevance reviewed, zero vessel, Navy, asbestos, or Reynolds-party content. DE-42 is the only commissioned USS Reynolds, so no namesake collision exists for the exact-name queries.

    Limitations
Exact-phrase and hull-number search of indexed opinions and dockets; pleadings or state-court filings using nonstandard phrasing (e.g., 'the Reynolds', 'DE 42' without hyphen) could evade the exact queries, and MDL-875 pleading vessel lists are not uniformly full-text indexed. Absence of located litigation does not prove no claim was ever filed; it establishes no indexed qualifying case names this hull.
