DANFS record for this hull: Ridgway named for towns in Colorado and Pennsylvania. Marion L. Bohgren in command. Assigned to Service Squadron 1, Service Force, Atlantic; departed New York 13 February 1943 for the Submarine Chaser Training Center, Miami, Fla., arriving 26 February; after two weeks' training commenced extensive patrol operations out of Miami on 17 April 1943; patrol and escort services out of Miami through the end of hostilities with periodic Charleston, S.C., availabilities. Returned to New York 10 December 1945, tentatively scheduled for disposal; departed New York 16 November 1946 via Cape Cod Canal, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Quebec to patrol duty on Lake Ontario. Decommissioned at Boston 2 March 1950 and placed in reserve; named Ridgway 1 February 1956; sold to Hughes Brothers, Inc., 16 September 1959.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-10-03 for all candidate URLs and hazegray.org is unreachable; the losthistory.net/hazegray verbatim transcription is cited and was verified live this session. Naming date '1 February 1956' conflicts with NavSource's '15 February 1956' - carried in gaps. The 1945-46 narrative sequence ('returning to New York 10 December 1945' then 'departed New York 16 November 1946') omits the July 1946 Naval Reserve Training placement NavSource documents.

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS. Spec block differs from DANFS (displacement 450 t. vs 348; draft 10'10" vs 7'6"; five 20mm vs two; no dcp listed) - wartime fit variation and source variance carried as documented, not reconciled. The 15 February 1956 naming date conflicts with DANFS's 1 February 1956 - carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos content.

ShipbuildingHistory Consolidated yard table row for this hull: Consolidated yard hull number 3123; 'PC 1193 | US Navy | Sub Chaser | 463d | 173 | 21-Jan-43 | Named Ridgway 1956, scrapped 1959.' The adjacent rows place PC-1192 (hull 3122) and PC-1194 (hull 3124) in the same Consolidated construction block. Yard history: the Morris Heights yard stood on Matthewson Road in the Bronx at what is now Roberto Clemente State Park; the company descended from Gas Engine & Power Co. (1885) and Charles L. Seabury Co. (1889), bought the Robert Jacob shipyard on City Island after WWII, closed Morris Heights, and ceased active boatbuilding in 1958.

Its commanding-officer roster lists eight WWII commanders beginning with Lt.(j.g.) Loren Hall Kiser, USN (21 January 1943 - 22 March 1943) and including T/Lt.(j.g.) Marion L. Bohgren, USN (Mid 1944 - Early 1945) - which conflicts with DANFS and NavSource, both of which place Bohgren in command at commissioning.

    Finding
The National Archives' Special List 44, by Ship Numbers, lists PC-1193 with deck-log coverage beginning 21 January 1943 (the commissioning date) and ending 28 February 1945. The entry supplies an archival lead for contemporaneous operational records for this hull covering the Miami patrol and escort period.

    Limitations
The list identifies deck-log coverage, not the contents of the logs. The underlying logs were not retrieved in this batch and are undigitized. Coverage ends 28 February 1945 - the post-February-1945 period, including the Naval Reserve Training service and Lake Ontario patrol duty (1946-1950), is not shown in this list. The entry does not establish asbestos presence, a specific exposure, or litigation facts.

    Finding
The National Archives asbestos-research guide identifies Record Group 19 and RG 38 sources relevant to pre-1961 Navy-vessel asbestos research, including RG 19 Entry P 12 'Patrol Craft General Information Books [Item S-68], 1902-1955', RG 38 Entry P 1-E 'Patrol Craft Material Inspection Reports and Related Documentation, 1940-1978', ship and machinery specifications, and S39 'Insulation and Lagging' drawings within the Hull Series of ship engineering drawings arranged by hull number (paper series, plus the 1945-1955 microfilm series). The guide states that asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941-1961 is a frequently requested research topic. These records are archival leads for possible hull-level material documentation, not evidence that asbestos was aboard PC-1193.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel-hulled patrol craft built 1942 at a wartime U.S. yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were thermal insulation and machinery/exhaust lagging in engineering spaces, gaskets and valve packing throughout the piping plant, and electrical insulation - in the confined hull volume characteristic of a 173-foot patrol craft. As a diesel-driven vessel she carried no boilers or steam turbines - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Finding
The U.S. Maritime Administration's Vessel History Database returns no record for 'PC-1193', 'PC 1193', 'Ridgway', or '1193' in live searches run this date. DANFS records the hull as sold to Hughes Brothers, Inc., 16 September 1959; the MARAD database negative is consistent with a direct Navy sale to a private scrapper leaving no MARAD custody trail.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming PC-1193 or Ridgway was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Secondary web sweeps surfaced only a law-firm jobsite page on the builder's yard (Consolidated Shipbuilding as a workplace) - an excluded source class - and no vessel content. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated API returned a daily-quota response (wait ~9,828 s / ~2.7 h); logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as a negative result.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). NARA deck logs (RG 24, coverage to 28 February 1945), the RG 19 patrol-craft General Information Books and RG 38 InSurv reports, and any Consolidated build-contract specifications are undigitized leads.
