Documented for this hull: 'A city in Missouri.' Laid down as PC-483 on 31 December 1940 by the Consolidated Ship Builders Corp.; launched 25 October 1941; sponsored by Mrs. J. M. Irish, wife of Rear Adm. J. M. Irish; delivered to the Navy 9 March 1942; commissioned 12 March 1942, Lt. I. H. Cammern, USNR, in command. Fitted out at Brooklyn; sailed south to Miami where, after shakedown, she remained as a schoolship for the Submarine Training Center. Ordered to the west coast at the end of 1942; sailed from Florida 11 January 1943 and reported for training ship duties at Treasure Island 3 February; nine months there performing minor patrol and escort duties in addition to her primary assignment; sailed west 3 November 1943 and reported ten days later to Commander, Hawaiian Sea Frontier for escort and patrol work - so employed in the Hawaiian Islands through the end of 1945. Underway for return to the east coast 22 January 1946; prepared for inactive duty at Key West, Fla., 1 March - 3 April; joined the 16th (Inactive) Fleet at Green Cove Springs, Fla., 6 April. 'Decommissioned 18 June, she was placed in service, in reserve and was totally inactivated in December 1947. PC-483, renamed Rolla 15 February 1956, remained in the Reserve Fleet, berthed in Florida, until struck from the Navy list on 1 July 1960.' Spec block: dp. 295; l. 173'8"; b. 23'; dr. 10'10"; s. 20 k.; cpl. 58; a. 2 3", 2 dct., 2 dcp.; cl. PC-461. CORRECTION NOTE: the circulating losthistory.net/hazegray transcription misprints '15 June' and 'PC-488' in the decommissioning/renaming sentence; the original print volume reads 'Decommissioned 18 June' and 'PC-483, renamed Rolla' - verified against the archive.org scan of the printed volume.

Ship-specific history only; DANFS documents service and milestones, not materials or asbestos content. The DANFS narrative ends at the 1 July 1960 striking and does not cover the Venezuelan transfer. Live NHHC DANFS page not located (all candidate URLs 404 on 2026-10-03) - standing NHHC link-rot/absent-entry defect; verbatim text carried from the archive.org scan of the printed Vol. VI (same text mirrored at losthistory.net/hazegray with the two transcription typos noted). Digitized ship-specific personnel record: PC-483's muster rolls span 12 March 1942 (commissioning) through 18 June 1947 on microfilm roll 5750 (315 page-images, unrestricted, NARA College Park). The coverage extends one year past her 18 June 1946 decommissioning - consistent with DANFS's 'placed in service, in reserve' status through her December 1947 total inactivation, during which a caretaker detachment would still render muster rolls. The rolls document by name the crew population aboard this hull across the full exposure era - the population frame for any future exposure-window or service-verification claim.

Operational detail supplementing the DANFS narrative, sourced by the compiler to primary patrol documents: on 6 May 1942 PC-483 picked up 45 men from the American tanker Java Arrow, torpedoed and damaged by U-333 eight miles off Vero Beach, Florida - during her Miami schoolship period. At Pearl Harbor under the Hawaiian Sea Frontier she performed the documented harbor-escort routine: escorted USS Skate out for her 4th war patrol 11 April 1944 (Lt. P.R. Phillips); conducted exercises off Midway 28 July 1944 with USS Tang, USS Batfish, USS Litchfield, and USS Greenlet (Lt. R.W. Anderson); escorted USS Finback and USS Dragonet out 1 November 1944; escorted USS Icefish in 20 January 1945 (Lt. D.J. Creahan); with PC-487 escorted USS Thresher, USS Peto, and USS Tilefish out 31 January 1945; escorted USS Aspro in 11 February 1945; escorted USS Crevalle in 5 July 1945. Wartime CO sequence: Cammarn (Mar 1942), Moffett, Patrick, LeHardy, Phillips, Anderson, Creahan (Dec 1944 - late 1945).

    Finding
Post-Navy trail corroboration: NavalCoverMuseum's designation history tracks PC-483 (commissioned 12 March 1942) -> laid up 6 April 1946 Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Florida Group -> decommissioned 18 June 1946 -> named ROLLA 15 February 1956 while in reserve -> struck 1 July 1960 -> CAMARON P-08 (Venezuelan Naval Service), transferred October 1960 -> reserve 1968 -> struck from the Venezuelan Navy Register 1978 -> fate unknown. Navypedia's Venezuelan fleet table lists 'Camaron (ex-Rolla, ex-PC483), P08, Consolidated SB New York' and confirms she was one of ten ex-US PC-461-class chasers forming Venezuela's Mejillon class (P-01 through P-10, entering Venezuelan service 1962-63); Navypedia dates her Venezuelan commissioning 15 October 1963 and her striking 1976-77. The shipbuildinghistory.com Consolidated yard table independently lists her as yard hull 3110 (design displacement 463 t, 173 ft, delivered 12 March 1942) with disposition 'Named Rolla 1956, to Venezuela 1961 as Camaron (P08), struck 1978' - a third transfer-year variant.

    Finding
A steel-hulled diesel submarine chaser built 1940-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2); era-standard applications aboard a small diesel patrol craft of this period were engine and exhaust lagging, thermal insulation in machinery and accommodation spaces, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and fireproofing/deck coverings in the confined hull volume. As a diesel-powered vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-ship confined-space exposure dynamic applies.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS PC-483 / Rolla / Camaron was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener base queries completed: 'USS Rolla' opinion search returned zero hits; 'USS Rolla' docket returned 85 fuzzy matches - all 20 reviewed hits are surname collisions (parties/attorneys/judges named Rolla), none vessel-related; 'PC-483' opinion and docket searches overflowed massively (3,496 and 24,583 counts) on tokenization noise ('PC' + '483' fragments) - all 20 reviewed hits per query are name collisions, none vessel-related. The modern Naval Vessel Register excludes ships disposed before 1987, so no NVR entry exists. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos' content found is marketing material in the excluded-source class - a navyshipexposure.com class page that asserts asbestos while printing demonstrable factual errors (it claims the class carried four GM diesels - the documented plant is two Fairbanks-Morse diesels), and a levylaw.com page asserting 'asbestos exposures at Consolidated Shipbuilding' without primary sourcing.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the 'PC-483' queries' tokenization noise means the overflow beyond the first 20 results was not individually reviewable; asbestos-qualified variants were queued to narrow them but could not run this session under the fleet request pacer (see search_ledger sl-14 through sl-16). Deck logs (RG 24), Consolidated build records, and Venezuelan-service records are undigitized/unlocated leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
