- Finding
- NHHC DANFS documents that LST-1091 was laid down 3 January 1945 by American Bridge Co., Ambridge, Pennsylvania; launched 3 March 1945, sponsored by Mrs. R. W. Robinson; and commissioned at New Orleans 6 April 1945, Lt. Milton S. Johnston Jr., USNR, in command. After shakedown in St. Andrews Bay, Florida, she loaded munitions at Mobile and departed 11 May for the Pacific. She embarked Army troops at Saipan in early July, arrived Buckner Bay, Okinawa, 28 July, distributed ammunition chiefly to small craft through the end of the war, then operated via the Philippines in the Sasebo occupation area. She reached San Diego 29 January 1946, joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Bremerton in February, underwent inactivation overhaul, and was decommissioned 5 July 1946 with the Columbia River Group. Named Sagadahoc County 1 July 1955, she remained in reserve until transfer to the Republic of China in October 1958 as Chung Chih; her name was struck from the Navy list 6 February 1959. DANFS statistical line: displacement 1,625; length 328 ft; beam 50 ft; draft 13 ft; speed 12 knots; complement 119; troop capacity 147; armament 8 40-mm; class printed LST-511.

- Hull timeline, specifications block, photo captions, and commanding-officer table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's hull page identifies Sagadahoc County as LST-542 class; gives 3 January 1945 laying-down at American Bridge, 3 March launch, 6 April commissioning at New Orleans, 5 July 1946 decommissioning at Bremerton, Columbia River reserve berth, 1 July 1955 naming, October 1958 transfer as ROCS Chung Chin (LST-226), and 6 February 1959 strike. Its specification block lists two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, Falk reduction gears, two propellers, 1,700 shp, three 100-kW 230-V DC diesel generators, 13 officers and 104 enlisted, and troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted. It reports later Taiwanese decommissioning 1 January 2011 and final fate unknown.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer compilation, not a U.S. government registry. Its U.S. Navy milestones agree with DANFS; its post-transfer Taiwanese-service and disposition statements were not independently verified against a Republic of China Navy record. It contains no asbestos documentation.

- 1920-1950 section, paragraphs beginning 'As the world entered World War II'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- CDC/NIOSH's historical account states that U.S. Navy use of asbestos increased during World War II for insulation purposes for pipes in naval vessels; it also describes Navy recognition in 1939 of respirator needs when cutting and wetting amosite and other asbestos-containing insulation, and continued Navy use after 1946.

- U.S. Navy vessel construction, repair, and crew populations during the WWII era
- Limitations
- Navy-wide WWII context only. The account does not name LST-1091, American Bridge, or the LST-542 class and does not establish that asbestos was installed, remained, or was disturbed aboard this hull; it establishes no quantity, location, individual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

- GAO product-page Highlights; full report link (26 pages)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's 1979 review of Navy asbestos controls states that it examined Navy use of asbestos in ships and that the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos material only insulation that was damaged or needed removal for necessary repairs; the policy was expanded in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and asbestos-control program population
- Limitations
- Navy-wide program review based on Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, published more than two decades after this hull left the U.S. Navy. It does not name LST-1091 or establish asbestos aboard it, material condition, exposure, causation, or a maintenance event for this hull.

[7]CourtListener authenticated fleet helper, /Users/charlesfletcher/devin-prompts/cl-auth-search.py, pacing response [court_record]
- Locator
- Helper output: 'COURTLISTENER PACING: the fleet-wide request budget is momentarily spent ... Do NOT retry in a loop'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CourtListener litigation sweep partially completed through the required authenticated, fleet-paced helper. Exact-name opinion query "USS Sagadahoc County" returned HTTP 200 with count 0. The subsequently submitted exact hull-number opinion query "LST-1091" was blocked before a result when the helper reported that the fleet-wide request budget was momentarily spent and instructed the session not to retry in a loop. The exact-name zero result is not a complete litigation negative because the required hull-number query remains uncompleted; no qualifying asbestos litigation, other litigation, or name collision was returned.

- Limitations
- The exact-name opinion-index zero result is narrow and does not prove no litigation exists. The required hull-number query returned no result because fleet pacing blocked it; state-court, sealed, unreported, and non-RECAP matters would in any event be outside CourtListener coverage. No returned material supports a vessel-specific exposure or causation finding.

[8]National Archives Catalog exact-name and hull-number searches; NHHC photograph catalog NH 73475 [other_primary]
- Locator
- NARA Catalog searches for "LST-1091" and "Sagadahoc County"; RG 24 is the Navy deck-log record group
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Archival lead: NARA's catalog was searched for the exact hull number and name, but no digitized, ship-titled LST-1091/Sagadahoc County deck-log, yard-work-package, asbestos-survey, or abatement record was surfaced in the search results available this session. NHHC's photo catalog is a positive ship-specific archival holding (NH 73475); it is not a maintenance or materials record. NARA RG 24 deck logs and naval-yard work-package holdings are the next record path for any ship-specific maintenance/material documentation.
