    Yard trades, Quincy Adams (1941-42); crew ~28 (1942-45); reserve-fleet/disposal handlers (1946-48)
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation that tracks official timelines - construction/milestone data here corroborates the builder yard table and uboat.net. Does not state when she decommissioned between last-CO (Dec 1945) and striking (Jan 1946).

    Finding
Builder record for this hull: 'SC 514 | US Navy | Sub Chaser | 136d | 110 | 15-Apr-42 | To the NDRF 1948' - delivery 15 April 1942 (matches the commission date) and National Defense Reserve Fleet disposition 1948, continuing the Maritime Commission transfer. Yard history documented: founded 1906 as F. D. Lawley, Inc. by George Lawley's grandson Fred; failed 1929 and was sold to Harold Noyes, who renamed it the Quincy Adams Yacht Yard; located at 47 Palmer Street, Germantown section of Quincy (site is now the Clipper Marina condos). Yard's wartime book was ~30 wooden subchasers plus tugs: SC-513 (sold 1946 as Taurua, wrecked Kaukura Atoll 1958), SC-628/629 (SCC, NDRF 1947/49), SC-744 (kamikazied in Leyte Gulf, lost 27-Nov-44), SC-745/746/748/749 (transferred overseas 1947), SC-747 (to Philippines 1948 as Surigao P-17), SC-750 (Isabella P-18), SC-1266-1275 block, SC-1274 (Malampay Sound AF-20), SC-1275 (scuttled by CoE 1950s, Sacramento River), SC-1474 (sold 1947), SC-1475-1479 (to USSR 1945 as BO-219/223/230/238/244), and post-war AMS/MSC minesweepers.

Quincy Adams yard trades (1941-44 wartime SC contracts); NDRF caretakers (1948+)
    Limitations
Builder-list secondary compilation (maintained from yard/Navy records); 'NDRF 1948' refines but does not contradict NavSource's 'transferred to the Maritime Commission 25 March 1948' - MC ran the NDRF. Yard table displacement 136d vs NavSource 148 t. (light vs loaded; see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
CORRECTION (batch re-scope 2026-09-29): 'PC-514' was never a PC-461-class steel patrol craft - the PC-461 numbering skips the block these hulls carried. The earliest SC-497-class wooden subchasers commissioned with PC pennants (SC-497 itself commissioned as 'USS PC-497'), and the whole batch reclassified to SC in April 1943. This hull ran as PC-514 for its first year, then SC-514 - same physical boat throughout.

    Finding
Class construction context: the 110-foot SC design was legislated 'economical and expeditious' in 1916 - built from wood at small commercial yacht/boat yards because steel and big-yard capacity were scarce. WWII reused the improved wooden 110-foot SC (the SC-497 class: ~580 hulls, 142 lend-lease to the Soviets, Free French, Brazil, Norway, Mexico). NHHC's DANFS entries document 'the 110-foot wooden class' in Pacific service (Eniwetok, Oct 1944). This hull's builder was exactly the intended profile - a small yacht yard doing rapid wartime wooden construction.

    Locator

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A 1941-42 wooden diesel subchaser sits inside the Navy's asbestos-use era, but with a materially smaller exposure surface than a steel steam vessel: twin GM 8-268A diesels with a wood hull mean no boiler or steam-pipe lagging. Era-plausible applications aboard a boat of this type and period: diesel exhaust lagging in the engine space, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and any vinyl or deck-surfacing materials. The enclosed engine compartment below deck is the only meaningful exposure zone.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for SC-514. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. The wood-hull diesel design is the honest reason asbestos exposure aboard these boats was likely much lower than aboard comparable steel vessels.

    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-sc514-01 through sl-uss-sc514-10
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming SC-514/PC-514 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet-wide authenticated quota was momentarily spent (helper-enforced pacing ~58/hr); logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content claiming subchasers were asbestos-bearing without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). Deck logs (NARA RG 24), the Maritime Commission transfer file, and NDRF vessel cards for this hull are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
