    Finding
SC-524 is an SC-497-class submarine chaser built by Mathis Yacht Building Co., Camden, New Jersey (YN 251). NavSource gives the order date as 1 April 1941, keel date as 29 May 1941, launch date as 19 September 1941, and a 13 April 1942 commissioning entry. Its page also carries an ex-PC-524/PC-524 label, but the batch re-scope corrects that stale designation: PC-524 never existed as a PC vessel, so this record uses USS SC-524 and does not adopt the PC designation.

    Finding
NavSource records transfer to France as Tirailleur (CH 101) at Toulon on 6 October 1944; later French numbers M 690, CH 690, and P 690; withdrawal from service on 2 January 1958; and scrapping in 1967. It lists 148 tons displacement, 110 feet 10 inches length, 17 feet beam, 6 feet 6 inches draft, 15.6 knots, and two 880 bhp GM 8-268A diesel engines with two shafts.

    Finding type

    Finding
GAO's Navy asbestos program report is relevant era context for Navy shipyard work and asbestos controls during the service period, but it does not identify SC-524 or establish any material aboard this hull.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos program
    Limitations
Program-level context only. It cannot support a ship-specific finding, product identification, individual exposure, quantity, remaining material, causation, or legal eligibility; the public product page was verified live but the full report text was not extracted in this session.

    Finding type

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos application, survey, abatement, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos product identification was located in the reviewed SC-524 hull record.

    Limitations
A negative search result is not proof that asbestos was absent. The source is silent on material content, and the record does not address hidden insulation, gaskets, packing, coatings, or individual exposure.

  7. [7]CourtListener authenticated helper sweep: four required base queries attempted; one docket query returned a 20-result page with 1,517 total matches, and the other three requests returned no payload after the helper request wait [other_primary]
    Locator
CourtListener helper outputs /tmp/sc524-name-docket.json and unavailable payloads for the other three required requests
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos-litigation hit was identified in the returned CourtListener docket page: all 20 displayed results were unrelated litigation or name collisions, including one asbestos MDL docket whose returned metadata did not identify SC-524 as an exposure site. The opinion and hull-number request payloads were unavailable after the helper wait, so the litigation sweep is incomplete rather than a clean zero-result finding.

    Accessed
    2026-10-03

    2026-10-03 search
    Population
    CourtListener indexed dockets/opinions
    Limitations
Do not treat this as proof that no asbestos case names SC-524. The base docket query overflowed and the other three helper responses were unavailable; no blind variant was run because the helper sweep was incomplete and the name-number collision behavior was unresolved.
