Official USCG service history for this hull: the Coast Guard manned ten Navy submarine chasers (6 SC and 4 PC); its commissioning table lists 'SC-528 6-13-42' - SC designation from commissioning. 'On July 28, 1942, the Navy crew on the SC-528, which had been transferred from the Eastern Sea Frontier to Greenland Patrol, was relieved by a Coast Guard crew.' Greenland Patrol service documented in detail: departed Boston 30 July 1942 for Casco Bay, thence departing with SC-527 and Tahoma (WPG-80) escorting four trawlers for Sydney; 5 August 1942 departed Sydney for Greenland (convoy SG-4); guardship duties at Kungnat Bay entrance (Bluie West Seven), Arsuk Fjord, and Brede/Skov Fjords junction; 21 October 1942 assisted disabled freighter Margaret Lykes; 1 January - 20 May 1943 patrol/guardship at Arsuk Fjord; Boston availability 1 June - 14 July 1943; convoy SG-29 escort St. John's to Kungnat Bay August 1943; Greenland patrol through end of 1943; 11 January 1944 propeller damaged by two-foot ice; February 1944 transport duty Navy 26 to BW No. 7; departed Greenland 25 July 1944 with Comanche (WPG-76), SC-527, SC-704; detached Task Group 24.8 on 6 August 1944, assigned Commander Service Force Atlantic Fleet; Chelsea Navy Yard availability to 27 August; Charleston minor repairs 30 August 1944. The history states '(No further record of the SC-528 in World War II is available).' Decommissioning entry: 'She was decommissioned March 7, 1946, and her Coast Guard crew removed.' Her Greenland Patrol assignment is corroborated by the Wikipedia Greenland Patrol vessel table (secondary - lists SC 527, SC 528, SC 688, SC 689, SC 704, SC 705).

Official 1949 USCG institutional history compiled from Coast Guard records - a primary government source, but the compilers themselves noted no further record after August 1944; Pacific-transit and disposal details come from other rows. Specifications: displacement 148 t.; length 110'10"; beam 17'; draft 6'6"; speed 15.6 kts.; complement 28; armament one 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector 'Y Guns,' two depth charge tracks; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Call sign Nan-Able-Sugar-Peter. History addendum documents post-August-1944 Pacific transit under 7th Fleet: Miami 31 August 1944; departed for Canal Zone 17 December 1944; San Diego 18 January 1945; Pearl Harbor 6 February 1945; Eniwetok 8 March 1945; Leyte 25 April 1945; Manila 27 June 1945; Subic Bay 12 August 1945; Aparri P.I. 2 September 1945; Subic Bay 25 November 1945. Commanding officers (incomplete): LTJG Rudolph R. Empire (14-26 Aug 1944); ENS Harold Meyer (from 26 Aug 1944). One USCG photograph archived. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation; its milestone dates generally track NVR/official sources (sister page SC-527 cites Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949) but its header designation line ('Commissioned PC-528, 12 June 1942; Reclassified SC-528 in April 1943') conflicts with DANFS and the USCG history - see ev-07. The Pacific-transit details (Aug 1944 - Nov 1945) rest on NavSource's addendum alone; the 1949 USCG history expressly had no further record. No asbestos content. 'Fate unknown' vs builder yard table 'sold in the Philippines 1948' - see gaps.

Builder yard documentation for this hull: Mathis yard hull no. 255, listed as 'SC 528,' U.S. Navy Sub Chaser, 148 tons, 110 feet, dated 12-Jun-42 (delivery date - consistent with delivery the day before the 13 June DANFS commissioning), disposition 'Sold in the Philippines 1948.' Yard history: Mathis Yacht Building Company was a spin-off of John H. Mathis Company at Cooper's Point, Camden; when WWII came the operation moved to Gloucester City, was acquired by John Trumpy and renamed John Trumpy & Sons, relocating to Annapolis MD after the war. The table lists this hull and all sisters only under SC designations - no PC prefix appears in the yard build record.

    Limitations
Specialist secondary compilation (Colton's shipbuilding-history tables, built from yard and registry records); the 'Sold in the Philippines 1948' disposition is unverified against a primary source and conflicts with NavSource's 'fate unknown' - carried as a reported disposition, not confirmed. The 12-Jun-42 column entry is the delivery date, which secondary sources have conflated with the commissioning date (see gaps). No asbestos content.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard small-vessel applications aboard a boat of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined machinery space. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull carried no structural fireproofing of the kind documented on steel combatants, narrowing but not eliminating candidate applications.

    Finding
CORRECTION: The NavSource page header titles this hull 'SC-528 ex-PC-528' and states 'Commissioned PC-528, 12 June 1942; Reclassified SC-528 in April 1943' - a convention applied identically to sister SC-527's header. Three independent checks show no commissioned PC-528 ever existed: (1) NHHC DANFS lists her as SC-528, commissioned 13 June 1942, and lists all eight Mathis-built boats (SC-507, SC-508, SC-524-SC-529) under SC designations with no PC entry; (2) the 1949 USCG official history table lists her as 'SC-528' commissioned 6-13-42 and narrates her as SC-528 from July 1942; (3) the PC-461-class completed-hull list skips the PC-497 to PC-541 band entirely, so no PC-461-class patrol craft numbered 528 was ever built. The NavSource header's 12 June date matches the builder's delivery date (yard table), not the DANFS commissioning date - the 'PC-528' is best treated as a contract-era paper designation (hulls ordered under PC program numbers) that this vessel never carried in service.

    Limitations
Corrects a circulating designation claim, not a material claim. Whether PC-528 existed briefly as an administrative/contract designation is not fully resolvable from public sources (Ships' Data and BuShips correspondence would settle it); what is established is that she commissioned and served as SC-528 and that no PC-461-class PC-528 vessel existed. The 'Reclassified April 1943' date in the NavSource header is unverified. No asbestos content.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS SC-528 (or PC-528) was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet-wide request budget momentarily spent (paced ~58/hr shared across sessions) on every attempt; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm/listicle coverage specific to this hull beyond generic SC-497-class assertions - excluded by source policy.

RG 24 deck logs (undigitized, NARA College Park), Mathis/Trumpy yard records, and Foreign Liquidation Commission sales files are the open archival leads.
