- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation of Navy register/photo-archive data, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official registers and are here corroborated by shipbuildinghistory, HyperWar, uboat.net and navypedia. Contains no asbestos content. 'Fate unknown' refers to post-1944 French disposition.

- Finding
- Construction-table row for this hull: 'SC 529, Mathis Yachts, Camden NJ, LDT 148, LOA 110, 26-Jun-42 [delivery], To Free French 1944 as CH 84.' Table framing: 973 sub chasers and related craft were built during WWII by 74 boatbuilders and yachtbuilders; 'The SCs were 110-foot wooden Sub Chasers' while PCs were 173-foot steel patrol craft - corroborating that hull number 529 belongs to the wooden SC type regardless of the PC-529 administrative designation.

- Finding

- Compilation of official USN register data transcribed by the HyperWar project, not a primary registry page for this hull; the row covers SC-529 and SC-530 jointly. Class spec block conflicts with NavSource's hull spec block on displacement (98 vs 148 t), speed (20 vs 15.6 kts), and complement (22 vs 28) - variants flagged in gaps, NavSource carried as the hull-specific page. [6]Designation cross-check: NavSource SC-529 ex-PC-529 page (commissioned PC-529 26 Jun 1942, reclassified SC-529 April 1943) vs navypedia SC497 class table ('PC529, 9.1942- SC529', http://www.navypedia.org/ships/usa/us_sc_sc.htm) vs shipbuildinghistory.com and HyperWar (SC type throughout) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CLARIFICATION of this hull's designation sequence: the craft was commissioned under the designation USS PC-529 on 26 June 1942 and reclassified SC-529 - April 1943 per NavSource, September 1942 per navypedia (unresolved variant, see gaps). The PC-5xx numbering block (roughly PC-497 through PC-541) was administratively assigned to 110-foot wooden SC-type subchaser contracts and later converted to SC designations; the PC-461-class numbering skips this block. This hull was therefore never a PC-461-class 173-foot steel patrol craft - 'PC-529' denotes this wooden hull's first US designation only, and 'USS PC-529' as a named patrol vessel did not exist as a distinct hull.

[7]Era inference built on: NavSource/shipbuildinghistory hull and propulsion data (wooden 110' SC type; 2 x GM 8-268A diesels, no steam plant); SC-497 class description (wooden 'splinter fleet' hulls); GAO HRD-80-2 program context (see ev-07) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource spec block; shipbuildinghistory framing paragraph; class descriptions
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel subchaser built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but the asbestos-relevant load aboard was materially smaller than on steel steam vessels: there is no boiler or steam system, so the dominant boiler/steam-lagging pathway does not apply. Era-consistent small-craft applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, engine and piping gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings - all in the confined spaces of a 110-foot wooden hull.

- Population
- Mathis Yacht Building Co. construction trades (1941-42); US crew (1942-44); French crew (1944-onward); any eventual disposal/scrapping trades
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, build specification, or work order located for SC-529. Names plausible era applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. The wooden-hull/diesel configuration means even era inference supports only a thin material set compared with steam combatants.

- Finding

- Finding
- US Navy deck logs for this hull - commissioned June 1942 through French transfer March 1944, first as PC-529 then SC-529 - would be held in NARA RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel logbooks, Entry 118) at Archives II, College Park. NARA's published digitized deck-logs index contains no SC-class submarine chasers (checked 2026-10-03): the logs are not digitized and are available only via textual reference at College Park. They are the best available lead for this hull's actual operations, yard availabilities, and commanding-officer confirmations.

[10]French disposition lead: NavSource 'fate unknown'; Memorial national des marins morts pour la France (memorial-national-des-marins.fr) documents sister ex-SC hulls (e.g., CH-62/P699 ex-SC-1344, f/184730) but carries no CH-84 page; French naval records reside at Service Historique de la Defense, Vincennes (SHD Marine) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 12/150529.htm ('Fate unknown'); memorial-national-des-marins.fr site search (no CH-84 page; P699/184730 sister example); postenavalemilitaire.com forum thread t5759 (unverified)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The hull's post-31-March-1944 history as CH-84 is undocumented in US sources: NavSource states 'fate unknown.' French-source status: the national mariners' memorial site has individual histories for several ex-SC hulls transferred to France (CH-62/P699 documented Casablanca-based patrol work 1943-1952 and a 1967 disposal) but no CH-84 entry was located. A French naval-philately forum page claims CH-84 served until 2 May 1953, but the page is internally garbled (mixes CH-721/P-721 identifiers into the CH-84 entry) and non-authoritative - carried here only as an unverified lead. The authoritative repository for French-service records is SHD Marine, Vincennes.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-sc-529-sc529-01 through -13
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record (hull not preserved), or verified litigation naming PC-529, SC-529, or CH-84 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NavSource states this directly; NHHC index pages returned 404). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be fully queried this session - the fleet-wide pacing budget was spent and the helper returned its stand-down message; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. A secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case - only generic law-firm ship-list marketing pages for the SC class, excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is an open gap (throttled, incomplete at this writing).
