Daytona Beach Boat Works construction trades (1941-42); crew (1942-46)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track official records but no ship-specific primary source exists (no DANFS entry). uboat.net and navalmarinearchive are specialist secondary compilations. The Auckland visits and the 1945 CO line are unsourced on the page. The 1946 buyer is unidentified; 'fate unknown' is NavSource's own note. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
An official museum archive holds a named per-hull collection for this boat. The finding-aid biography states that after surviving the February 1942 USS Pollux wreck, Strauss 'went on to become an ensign and later commanded SC 668, a sub chaser.' The box list includes 'Copies of Logs, SC-668; 1944 Feb 1-1944 Mar 31 (2 items)' and two copies of the servicemen's magazine 'The Chaser' (10 Nov 1944). The companion 2004.81 photograph series (~20 objects) documents: 'Port view of PC 668 underway with shoreline behind, 1942' (2004.81.49); SC 668 at anchor with crew on deck, Guadalcanal, 1943 (2004.81.50/.53/.71, one stamped 'BS 107365'); five officers at the bridge, Tulaghi (2004.81.66); SC 668 tied up to USS OCEANOGRAPHER at Malaita with survey work (2004.81.65/.68); SC 668 underway with convoy (2004.81.128/.129); a 40mm antiaircraft gun on the aft deck and a 20mm gun (2004.81.114/.131); named officers and crew in captions (Captain Frank Osman; Executive Officer and later commanding officer Henry Strauss; Lt. Quant, 'my Exec. and who eventually relieved me in command' per Strauss's Sound Archives transcript; Lt. William Manning; officer Carr; Gunner's Mate 1/c Parks); 'Henry Strauss painting Japanese flag on flying bridge' (2004.81.109); and a ship's mascot (Nov 1943).

    Limitations
Archival lead only: photographs and two months of log copies are physical holdings not individually examined; caption metadata is donor-derived. Photographs establish presence (Guadalcanal, Tulaghi, Malaita, convoy escort, survey duty) and the PC designation in active use, not work or material records. No asbestos content. The 'Japanese flag' caption implies a claimed kill marking - no corroborating action report located, and the claim is not asserted in this record. Officer names/roles are caption-level, not a documented command roster.

    Finding
CORRECTION of a circulating identity error: this hull was never a PC-461-class 173-foot steel patrol craft. The SC-497-class boats in the 628-669 block were ordered inside the wartime patrol-craft program and carried PC numbers at commissioning; the Navy reclassified them SC in April 1943. NavSource's own SC archive lists SC-628 through SC-669 as submarine-chaser hulls, and its per-hull page records this boat commissioning as PC-668 on 4 July 1942 before the April 1943 reclassification. A captioned 1942 museum photograph shows her underway literally marked as 'PC 668.' Any source describing 'PC-668' as a steel PC-461 patrol craft propagates a numbering-block error: the hull was a 110-foot wooden SC-497-class subchaser throughout.

    Limitations
Corrects a designation/identity error, not a material claim. The April 1943 reclassification date is NavSource's; the order-inside-the-PC-program mechanism is class-level secondary literature. Partial verification: the commissioning designation rests on NavSource plus one captioned museum photograph, not a commissioning document located directly.

    Finding
NHHC documentation for the adjacent same-yard hull: USS SC-669, 'a 95-ton 110-foot submarine chaser,' was built at Daytona Beach, Florida; commissioned July 1942; initially based at Charleston, South Carolina; reassigned to the Gulf Sea Frontier September 1942; then sent to the Pacific for employment in the South Pacific with her home yard at Pearl Harbor, arriving Tutuila, Samoa, in late January 1943; assigned to the 12th Naval District October 1945; decommissioned November 1945; sold March 1947. NHHC photo NH 96482 shows SC-669 with SC-508 at the Charleston Navy Yard, 10 August 1942. This corroborates the block-level build/service pattern for the Daytona Beach SCs (SC-668's immediate sister from the same yard, same design, same Pacific assignment pattern).

Documents a different hull (SC-669), not SC-668 - class/block corroboration only; it does not establish that SC-668 shared any particular assignment or milestone. Verbatim transcription of an official NHC page (the live history.navy.mil equivalent could not be located). The '95-ton' figure conflicts with NavSource's 148 t and PCSA's 98 t - carried in gaps. No asbestos content.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the confined machinery space, with possible brake linings on deck winches. As a wooden diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam-driven combatants does not apply, and this type's asbestos footprint is categorically smaller than a steam vessel's.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or construction specification located for SC-668. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. Wooden patrol craft plausibly carried little asbestos relative to steam vessels, but no source quantifies the type's material content; this row does not establish presence, absence, or quantity aboard this hull. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming SC-668 or PC-668 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). No DANFS entry exists for this hull. CourtListener 'SC-668' opinion search returned 13 hits, all name collisions (Kentucky/Alabama docket-number matches and reporter-citation matches); the remaining three base queries ('SC-668' docket, 'PC-668' opinion, 'PC-668' docket) could not be completed this session - the fleet pacing budget was repeatedly spent - and are logged as blocked, not negative results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying asbestos litigation and no law-firm listicle naming this hull - only unrelated name collisions (a Zimbabwe Supreme Court case number, a Sennheiser headset model).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; and three of four CourtListener base queries are a genuine open gap (pacing-blocked, not run). Mystic's two months of log copies, NARA RG 24 deck logs, BuShips correspondence, and 1946 sale/disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
