- Finding
- NavSource records SC-691 (ex-PC-691, call sign Nan-William-Zebra-Baker) as an SC-497-class submarine chaser that 'served the Navies of the United States and France': laid down 31 May 1942 by Annapolis Yacht Yard Inc., Annapolis, MD; launched 19 September 1942; commissioned USS PC-691 on 30 December 1942; reclassified SC-691 in April 1943; transferred to France and reclassified CH-132 on 29 September 1944; fate unknown. Its specification block gives 148 tons displacement, 110 ft 10 in length, 17 ft beam, 6 ft 6 in draft, 15.6 knots, complement 28, armament of one 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth-charge Y-guns and two depth-charge tracks, and propulsion of two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear on two shafts.

- Per-hull compiled history and specifications; NavSource is not a Navy adjudication or asbestos survey. NavSource states 'There is no DANFS history available for SC-691,' but NHHC's consolidated SC-601-SC-700 entry does carry a short block for this hull (see ev-02). No material content or exposure finding is made.

- Finding type

- Finding
- A NavSource photo caption documents SC-691's operational presence: 'A nest of nine SCs in the harbor of Salerno, [Sicily] shortly after the port was taken. SC-692 is at extreme left. Three ships outboard is the SC-535. Two ships outboard of her is the SC-530, with SC-691 moored to her port side.' This places SC-691 at Salerno shortly after the port's September 1943 capture, alongside SC-530, SC-535, SC-692, and other SC-class craft.

- U.S. Navy SC-497-class crews operating in the Mediterranean, 1943
- Limitations
- The caption documents this hull's presence at Salerno; it does not document asbestos, materials, or any exposure. The bracketed '[Sicily]' is the source's own interpolation and is geographically inconsistent - Salerno is on the Italian mainland (Campania); carried as quoted, with the discrepancy flagged rather than corrected.

- index introductory class paragraph; SC-497 class heading and SC-691 link
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The NavSource index places SC-691 in the SC-497 class, described as 580 wood-hulled 110-foot submarine chasers built during World War II, of which 142 were transferred to the Allies under Lend-Lease. The PC-691 label in the hull timeline is therefore a construction/commissioning designation for this wooden SC-type craft, not evidence that SC-691 was a PC-461-class steel patrol craft (the PC-461 class enumeration closed below this hull number). The record is carried as USS SC-691, with PC-691 as an alias and CH-132 as its post-transfer French designation.

- Limitations
- This resolves the class/identity scope per the batch re-scoping (PC-691 never existed as a PC-461-class vessel); it does not establish asbestos aboard this hull. The index is a photographic/archive compilation and does not replace a ship-specific Navy material record.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The archive's Annapolis yard production table lists 'SC 691, US Navy, Sub Chaser, 136 t., 110 ft., 30-Dec-42' with disposition 'To Free French 1944 as CH-132, scrapped 1964.' Its yard history identifies Annapolis Yacht Yard Inc. as a 1937 successor to Chance Marine Construction (Eastport, Annapolis) and 'a major builder of sub chasers and torpedo boats' sold to John Trumpy in 1947. Secondary compilations (uboat.net; French postal-history and veteran memoir pages) further report the post-transfer arc CH-132 to CH-714 to P-714 to M-714 (buoy tender), decommissioned 23 July 1963, sold for demolition at Toulon 1964, and a U.S. order date of 16 February 1942 - none of which is confirmed by a U.S. official source.

- French Navy crew, 1944-1963 (per secondary sources)
- Limitations
- Museum/archive-compiled secondary table, not a U.S. Navy record; corroborates transfer and reports a 1964 scrapping that NavSource leaves as 'fate unknown.' The detailed French career arc (CH-714/P-714/M-714, 1963 decommissioning, Toulon demolition) and the 16 February 1942 order date come from enthusiast/compiled sources only and remain unverified. Tonnage shown (136 t.) differs from NavSource's specification block (148 t.); no asbestos, materials, or exposure content.

- Locator
- GAO product page highlights and full-report summary
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reported Navy-wide ship asbestos context: the Navy identified asbestos in components including clutches and electric cables, and described thermal insulation as the major shipboard use; the Navy issued a policy in 1975 to eliminate asbestos where suitable alternatives were designated. This establishes era/program context overlapping SC-691's 1942-44 U.S. construction and service, not a finding about this hull.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A small wooden diesel submarine chaser built during World War II falls within the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. If era-standard materials were used, the narrower diesel-craft pathways would be engine/exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical cable insulation, and localized fire/heat insulation where fitted; there is no boiler, steam piping, or turbine pathway shown by the hull specification.

[9]Batch-8065 authenticated CourtListener sweep through cl-auth-search.py; four required base queries attempted/recorded in search_ledger [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-sc-691-sc691-01 through -04
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation is reported for SC-691 or PC-691 in this record. The authenticated helper was invoked for the required exact-name and hull-number opinion/docket searches on three spaced attempts during the session, but fleet-wide pacing repeatedly prevented results; this is a litigation-search gap, not a clean negative result.

- 2026-10-03
- Limitations
- The helper reported the shared fleet request budget was momentarily spent and instructed a later retry; three spaced attempts over the session all returned the pacing stand-down, and no raw or anonymous CourtListener request was made. Because the four base searches were not completed, absence of a located hit cannot be treated as proof that no case exists. No asbestos claim, exposure allegation, or disposition is asserted.
