NavSource records SC-693 (ex-PC-693, call sign Nan-William-Zebra-Love) as an SC-497-class submarine chaser that served the Navies of the United States and France: laid down 15 May 1942 by the Calderwood Yacht Yard Inc., Manchester, MA; launched 24 October 1942; commissioned USS PC-693 on 12 January 1943; reclassified SC-693 in April 1943; transferred to France and reclassified CH-107 on 27 September 1944; fate unknown. Its specification block gives 148 tons displacement, 110 ft 10 in length, 17 ft beam, 6 ft 6 in draft, 15.6 knots, complement 28, armament of one 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth-charge projector 'Y Guns' and two depth-charge tracks, and propulsion of two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear on two shafts. No photograph of the hull is in the archive.

    Limitations
Per-hull compiled history and specifications; NavSource is not a Navy adjudication or asbestos survey. NavSource states 'There is no DANFS history available for SC-693,' but NHHC's consolidated SC-601-SC-700 entry does carry a short block for this hull (see ev-02) - the NavSource notice refers to the absence of an individual DANFS article. No material content or exposure finding is made.

    Finding
The NavSource index places SC-693 in the SC-497 class, described as 580 wood-hulled 110-foot submarine chasers built during World War II, of which 142 were used by the Allies under Lend-Lease. The PC-693 label in the hull timeline is therefore a construction/commissioning designation for this wooden SC-type craft, not evidence that the hull was a PC-461-class steel patrol craft (the PC-461 class enumeration closed below this hull number; the PC pennants on the 110-foot boats were corrected to SC in the April 1943 class-wide reclassification - the class leader SC-497 itself commissioned as USS PC-497 on 15 April 1942 and was reclassified SC-497 in April 1943, and sister SC-692 commissioned as USS PC-692 on 25 November 1942 and was reclassified SC-692 in April 1943, per the NavSource pages for those hulls). The record is carried as USS SC-693, with PC-693 as an alias and CH-107 as its post-transfer French designation.

    SC-497-class construction program; 142 Lend-Lease transfers
    Limitations
This resolves the class/identity scope per the batch re-scoping (PC-693 never existed as a PC-461-class vessel); it does not establish asbestos aboard this hull. The index is a photographic/archive compilation and does not replace a ship-specific Navy material record.

    Finding
The archive's Calderwood yard production table lists 'SC 693, US Navy, Sub Chaser, 136 t., 110 ft., 12-Jan-43' with disposition 'To Free French 1944 as CH 107.' Its yard history identifies Calderwood Yacht Yard as founded by W. B. Calderwood in 1899 at Manchester, MA, a pre-war builder of yachts and racing boats, sold after the war and renamed Manchester Marine. The same archive's WWII small-craft production table (shipbuildinghistory compilation) lists 'SC | 693 | Calderwood YY | Manchester MA | 148 | 110 | 12-Jan-43 | To Free French 1944 as CH 107.' Secondary compilations (uboat.net; French postal-history and reference pages) further report a U.S. order date of 16 February 1942 and a post-transfer arc of CH-107 to CH-708 to P-708 with French decommissioning (desarme) on 8 December 1953 - none of which is confirmed by a U.S. official source.

    Limitations
Museum/archive-compiled secondary table, not a U.S. Navy record; corroborates delivery date and transfer and reports French-service detail that NavSource leaves as 'fate unknown.' The detailed French career arc (CH-708/P-708, 1953-12-08 decommissioning) and the 16 February 1942 order date come from enthusiast/compiled sources only and remain unverified. Tonnage shown (136 t. yard table) differs from NavSource's specification block (148 t.); no asbestos, materials, or exposure content.

    Finding
The PCSA class page documents the type as the 110-foot, wood-hulled WWII subchaser: program totals of 475 ordered, 37 cancelled, 438 delivered; Lend-Lease transfers of 142 boats including 50 to France; and class specifications of two 1,200-bhp straight-8 or two GM pancake diesel engines, 19 knots, 1,500 nm at 12 knots, complement 3 officers and 25 enlisted. This is the class of this hull (SC-497 class per DANFS/NavSource).

Class-level association documentation, not a hull record; PCSA figures differ from the NavSource index's '580 built' (see report for the count discrepancy). No asbestos, materials, or exposure content. The PCSA spec block's speed/complement/engine figures differ slightly from the NavSource per-hull block (19 vs 15.6 kts; 3+25 vs 28; 1,200-bhp vs 880-bhp engines) - carried as class-level context, not hull data.

    Finding
GAO reported Navy-wide ship asbestos context: the Navy identified asbestos in components including clutches and electric cables, and described thermal insulation as the major shipboard use; the Navy issued a policy in 1975 to eliminate asbestos where suitable alternatives were designated. This establishes era/program context overlapping SC-693's 1942-44 U.S. construction and service, not a finding about this hull.

    Finding
A small wooden diesel submarine chaser built during World War II falls within the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. If era-standard materials were used, the narrower diesel-craft pathways would be engine/exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical cable insulation, and localized fire/heat insulation where fitted; there is no boiler, steam piping, or turbine pathway shown by the hull specification.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming SC-693 or PC-693 was located in the CourtListener searches completed this session. The exact-name opinion query "SC-693" returned 16 hits, all classified as name collisions on court docket numbers and text fragments (Kentucky Supreme Court SC-prefixed dockets, Vermont Superior Court 24-sc-693, Alabama SC 693, Georgia Court of Appeals fragments, and two 19th-century text matches) - zero hits reference the vessel. The exact-name docket query "SC-693" returned 11 dockets / 13 documents, all collisions on text strings inside unrelated bankruptcy, criminal, and civil filings - zero reference the vessel. The two required "PC-693" alias queries (opinion and docket) could not be completed: fleet-wide pacing returned the stand-down on every spaced attempt.

    Limitations
The completed "SC-693" opinion and docket sweeps are a genuine negative within those indexes for that spelling; the "PC-693" alias searches are an open gap (blocked by shared fleet pacing, not run to completion), so absence of a hit under the PC spelling cannot be treated as proven. No raw or anonymous CourtListener request was made. No asbestos claim, exposure allegation, or disposition is asserted in either direction.
