- Documented for this hull (NavSource timeline): laid down 7 March 1942 by Elizabeth City Shipyard, Elizabeth City, NC; launched 24 April 1942; commissioned PC-705 on 2 October 1942; reclassified SC-705 in April 1943; decommissioned 22 January 1946; struck from the Naval Register 7 February 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission 3 September 1946. Merchant chain as published: registered 1948 to Frank Ernest Jacobs of Brooklyn, NY, as fishing boat Phyllis J; acquired 1954 by Cornelius J. Jacobs of Brooklyn under the same name; acquired 1970 by Chip-Kohl, Inc. of East Orange, NJ; renamed Amy Sue 1971; out of documentation 1984; fate unknown. Spec block: 148 t displacement, 110'10" length, 17' beam, 6'6" draft, 15.6 kts, complement 28; armament one 40mm mount, two .50 cal MG, two Y-gun depth charge projectors, two depth charge tracks; two 880bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. Call sign NXBN. Commanding officers (incomplete): LTJG J. F. Claussen USCG; LTJG W. L. Martin USCGR (24 Jul 1945); ENS C. W. Roll USCG (22 Sep 1945). NavSource states flatly: 'There is no DANFS history available for SC-705.'

- Official USCG history for this hull: 'The USS SC-705 was commissioned on 2 October 1942' (1942 and 1943 war diaries not available). Coast Guard-manned - 'commissioned ... with her Coast Guard crew aboard'; 'Her Coast Guard crew was removed on 22 January 1946.' From 1 January to 1 May 1944 on patrol duty in Greenland waters, mostly Patrol Area No. 3 in Arsuk Fjord, relieving SCs 704, 688, 527, and 689; moored at Gronne Dal between patrols, usually stopping at Ivigtut. 1 May 1944 departed Gronne Dal for Argentia in convoy with USS Northland (WPG-49), SC-688, and SC-689; arrived 6 May, departed 9 May for Boston with three other escorts, arrived 12 May; under repair until 14 June; training exercises Casco Bay; underway for Argentia 22 June; damaged slightly by a fire around the galley stack 6 July; departed 10 July, arrived Gronne Dal 14 July; resumed patrol of Area No. 3 until final Greenland departure in late 1944 (see limitations for the transcription's internally inconsistent dates); availability at Chelsea Navy Yard Annex until 10 October 1944; departed for Quonset Point, RI, 15 October 1944 for radar target-towing duty held through end of 1944. Decommissioned 22 January 1946.

- Limitations
- Primary provenance, secondary carrier: NavSource transcribes the USCG Historian's Office vessel history; the live USCG Historian site (history.uscg.mil) returned HTTP 403 to automated fetch on 2026-10-03, so the underlying file could not be re-verified at source. The transcription's own dates for the second Greenland departure are internally inconsistent ('departed ... December 8, 1944 ... arriving on September 21, 1944'; a September arrival preceding Chelsea Annex availability 'until October 10, 1944' reads as a probable typo) - flagged, not corrected (see gaps). No asbestos or materials content. The galley-stack fire and the Boston/Chelsea availabilities are documented events only - no work package or materials record was located for any of them.

- DESIGNATION CORRECTION: this hull was commissioned as PC-705 (2 Oct 1942) and reclassified SC-705 in April 1943 - it was never a PC-461-class steel patrol craft. The SC-497-class boats commissioned under PC-series numbers and were reclassified SC in April 1943 (class lead SC-497 likewise commissioned USS PC-497 15 Apr 1942, reclassified April 1943; NavSource's SC index lists SC-705 as 'ex-PC-705' among many sisters). No US PC-461-class patrol craft held PC-705. The only other 'PC-705' on record is the Republic of Korea's Han Ra San - a completely different hull, ex-USS PC-485 (Consolidated SB, Morris Heights NY), transferred to Korea 1952 and sunk in a Guam typhoon 1962 (Colton table). Colton independently corroborates this hull's row: 'SC 705 | Elizabeth City SY | 148 | 110 | 2-Oct-42 | To MARAD 1946.'

- Corrects a designation error that can misdirect records searches: queries for 'PC-705' conflate this hull (Oct 1942-Apr 1943 designation window only) with the unrelated Korean ex-PC-485, and PC-461-class literature assigns no 705 hull at all. Naval Marine Archive mirrors Colton's dataset; the canonical shipbuildinghistory.njscuba.net URL returned HTTP 500 on 2026-10-03, so the identical live mirror was used. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Class context: 438 wooden SC-497-class subchasers built across roughly fifty small boatyards during WWII; 110-foot wooden hulls ('splinter fleet'), diesel propulsion (two GM 8-268A straight-8 diesels or GM 16-184A 'pancake' engines, two shafts), complement about 3 officers + 24 enlisted, endurance ~1,500 nm at 12 kts. Elizabeth City Shipyards built more SCs than any other boatyard - 28 total, including this hull; sister Greenland Patrol chasers SC-704, SC-706, SC-707, SC-708 were also Elizabeth City boats. Class spec figures vary across references (98-148 t displacement; 15.6-21 kts; armament fits of 3"/50 or 40mm plus 20mm/.50 cal and depth-charge/Mousetrap suites) reflecting source and fit-date differences.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A 1942 wooden-hulled diesel subchaser sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but at far narrower scope than a steam vessel: with no boilers and no steam distribution, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply. Era-standard applications consistent with a small diesel warship of this period were diesel-exhaust lagging/insulation on engine exhaust runs, machinery and valve gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and panel/fireproofing materials around machinery and galley spaces. The documented 6 July 1944 galley-stack fire and the May-June and October 1944 repair availabilities are the kind of events that disturb such materials, but no work package or material record for this hull was located.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for SC-705, and none may exist: small wooden craft rarely received the materials documentation of steel combatants. The fire/availability events are documented but their materials scope is unknown - presence is not asserted.

The CourtListener opinion-index query for 'SC-705' returned 14 hits, all name collisions verified at row level: three matched literally on docket number ('No. 91-SC-705-DG', 'No. 89-SC-705-KB', 'SC 705') and the rest on reporter/citation tokens in 1963-1992 KY/GA/AL appellate decisions - none vessel-related, none asbestos; the remaining three base queries could not be run under fleet pacing. This hull has no DANFS entry at all and no NVR record - as a 110-foot wooden diesel subchaser it is among the least-documented hull types in the WWII fleet for materials purposes.
