[2]NavSource Online, Submarine Chaser Photo Archive, SC-716 page [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource SC-716 page, timeline and class/specification sections
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- SC-716 was laid down 18 May 1942 by Fisher Boat Works in Detroit, launched 20 November 1942, commissioned as PC-716 on 9 January 1943, and reclassified SC-716 in April 1943. NavSource identifies the hull as an SC-497-class submarine chaser and states that no DANFS history is available.

- Ship-specific identification and milestones; NavSource is an archival photo/deck-log compilation rather than a DANFS entry. It does not establish asbestos content or individual exposure.

[3]NavSource Online, SC-716 deck-log transcription and damage photographs; photographs attributed to QMCS Larry Richter, USCGR, Lt. James M. Stewart, USNR, and National Archives material [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource SC-716 page, 'SC-716 Deck Log Entries for May 1943,' 17-22 May 1943, and linked damage photographs
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- On 17 May 1943 at Port Terminal, Morehead City, North Carolina, one or more A/S20 projectiles exploded on the dock alongside SC-716 while projectiles were being cleaned. The log records deaths and injuries, severe damage to the ship and pilot-house vicinity, and little damage to the hull proper; it also records ammunition removal and a security watch. The ship was towed to the Morehead City Section Base on 18 May and moved to Elizabeth City Shipyard on 22 May for repair.

- SC-716 crew, Section Base personnel, and repair personnel
- Limitations
- The source records an ammunition explosion, casualties, and repair movement; it does not mention asbestos, insulation, or hazardous-material work. The casualty account is not an occupational-exposure finding.

[4]NavSource Online, SC-716 page, service and disposition timeline [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource SC-716 page, timeline lines for 1945-1954 and fate
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource reports that SC-716 grounded at Okinawa during Typhoon Louise on 9 October 1945, was refloated on 5 November 1945, salvaged in 1946 and decommissioned, declared surplus on 19 March 1948, acquired in 1952 by Bee and Dee, Inc. of Miami for use as a fishing boat under the name El Toro, and operated under the Costa Rican flag in 1954; its later fate is unknown.

- Navy salvage/disposal personnel and later civilian operators
- Limitations
- Later service and disposition are reported by NavSource; no separate disposition certificate or current-location record was located. Nothing in the timeline identifies asbestos or abatement.

[5]Naval History and Heritage Command, Pacific Typhoon October 1945, ship-damage table [other_primary]
- Locator
- NHHC Pacific Typhoon October 1945 table, SC 716 row; direct URL returned 404 on 2026-10-03
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC's indexed typhoon table lists SC 716 as refloated on 5 November 1945, corroborating the corresponding NavSource disposition entry.

- Population
- Pacific Fleet vessels affected by Typhoon Louise
- Limitations
- The NHHC URL returned 404 on direct verification during this session, although the indexed result exposed the SC 716 row. This corroboration is retained as a documented access gap and does not add details beyond refloating date.

[6]U.S. Government Accountability Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO HRD-80-2 product page and official PDF search extract; direct retrieval HTTP 403
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- GAO reviewed Navy asbestos use, removal costs, and worker-protection efforts, and its report summary states that asbestos insulation was used in Navy ships; the report's Navy response also identifies other applications such as gaskets and pipe-hanger liners.

- Study period
- 1975-1979
- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and Navy vessel maintenance programs
- Limitations
- Program-level Navy context only. The report does not name SC-716, the SC-497 class, Fisher Boat Works, or any specific material aboard this hull. The GAO page and PDF returned HTTP 403 to direct retrieval, so the indexed official product-page description was used; this is not ship-specific evidence.

[7]Batch research review and CourtListener search attempt [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search ledger rows sl-uss-sc-716-sc716-02 through -05
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos record was located in the sources reviewed: no survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos litigation record naming SC-716 was found. The required CourtListener helper invocation was stopped by its fleet-wide pacing limiter before an authenticated HTTP request could be made; this is a blocked search, not a negative litigation result.

- ship_specific
- Accessed
- 2026-10-03
- Study period
- 2026-10-03
- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener litigation status remains open because the fleet limiter required stand-down; no asbestos-qualified variants were run. NavSource states there is no DANFS history for this hull.
