- Documented for this hull: laid down 6 August 1942 as PC-751 by the Robinson Marine Construction Co., Benton Harbor, MI; launched 28 October 1942; commissioned PC-751 27 November 1942; reclassified SC-751 in April 1943; 'Grounded and sunk off Western Australia 22 June 1943.' Spec block: 103 t.; 110' 10" length; 17' beam; 6' 6" draft; 15.6 kts.; complement 28; armament one 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two 'Y Gun' depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Sole listed CO: LTJG Bobbie C. Davis, USNR, 27 November 1942 - 22 June 1943 (roster courtesy Theodore R. Treadwell).

- Limitations
- Volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track Navy records but should be read with the corroborating official sources (ev-04, ev-05). 'Grounded and sunk' conflates the 22 June grounding with the later sinking under tow (ev-02, ev-03). Spec block is the class-standard set; the loss narrative shows 20mm guns in use at loss, not the listed .50 cal. No asbestos content.

- Detailed loss narrative for this hull: commissioned 22 November 1942 (variant date - see ev-01); shakedown to Florida and Panama; officers Ens. B.C. Davis (CO), Ens. Thomas K. Parkinson (XO), Ens. W.D. Goldfarb. Arrived Brisbane with SC-739 March 1943 carrying 3 officers and 24 enlisted; Fremantle harbor patrol and west-coast convoy escort. Departed Fremantle 16 June 1943 escorting tanker Ondina with USS Isabel to Exmouth Gulf. In heavy weather a deduced-reckoning error put her ~10 nm south of North West Cape; at 0555 on 22 June she struck Ningaloo Reef near 21 deg 56' S and grounded fast. Ens. Parkinson was lost swimming after the capsized wherry, last seen ~1330. Crew abandoned 0830 on 23 June; rescued by PBY Catalina and taken to seaplane tender USS Childs. Salvage under USS Chanticleer from 24 June (beach camp from 4 July); over ~2 months engines, sonar gear, guns, masts, pilothouse, shafts and propellers removed, holes patched, hull floated off; under tow she sank in ~55 fathoms at ~21 deg 56' S, 113 deg 53' E. Court of inquiry did not hold Davis culpable; he later commanded SC-746, 7th Amphibious Force.

- Limitations
- Government museum database narrative compiled from published secondary scholarship (McCarthy 2011; Treadwell 2002), not a primary loss report - the underlying court-of-inquiry record is an archival lead (ev-11). Gives commissioning as 22 November 1942 vs NavSource 27 November (see gaps). Positions are estimates ('estimated 21 deg 56' S'). No asbestos content.

- Limitations
- Registry fields are summary data, some estimated ('said to be', 'estimated'); 'finally lost around 6 August' is approximate - the narrative's ~2-month salvage implies a later final sinking (see gaps). 'Protected: Federal' is Australian historic-shipwreck protection status, not a survey of contents. No asbestos content.

- CORRECTION: the official NHHC WWII casualty list carries both hulls as separate losses in the 110-foot 'Submarine Chaser (SC)' section - 'USS SC-751 grounded off Western Australia, 22 June 1943' and 'USS SC-984 grounded off New Hebrides, 9 April 1944.' Circulating wreck records (Wikimapia wreck entry; worldarmies war-loss list '751 - wrecked in New Hebrides April 1944') attribute the New Hebrides April 1944 loss to hull 751: that casualty was SC-984 (grounded on Cooks Reef off Mai Island 9 April 1944, sank 10 April). The '751 ... New Hebrides April 1944' entry is a hull-number conflation.

- Finding
- CORRECTION: the batch scope note asserted 'PC-751 never existed as a PC vessel.' In fact the 110-foot chasers of this class carried PC designations until the class-wide April 1943 reclassification: the class lead's NavSource page reads 'Commissioned USS PC-497, 15 April 1942 - Reclassified SC-497 in April 1943,' and SC-751's own page reads 'Commissioned PC-751, 27 November 1942 - Reclassified SC-751 in April 1943.' The hull therefore served ~5 months (27 Nov 1942 - Apr 1943) as USS PC-751. The narrower claim stands: no PC-461-class 173-foot patrol craft bore number 751 - that enumeration closed before it. The PC designation, not the class attribution, is what needed correcting.

- Corrects the literal phrasing of the scoping fact-QA, not its substance: 'PC-751' on this hull was a temporary designation of a submarine chaser, not a PC-461-class patrol craft. Reclassification month ('April 1943') is as precise as NavSource gets; the effective day is not stated. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser built in late 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Era-standard asbestos-relevant materials for a small diesel combatant of this period were engine and exhaust insulation, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. She carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull and small machinery spaces place her materials load far below that of a steel steam vessel.

CAVEAT: CourtListener queries for both designations ('SC-751', 'PC-751'; opinion and docket indexes) were attempted this session but blocked by the fleet-wide request pacer (helper exit 2, 'request budget momentarily spent') - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. - Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era materials plausibly present at construction sank with the hull in 1943 and no post-service phase exists in which documentation would normally be generated. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (blocked, not run to a result). Deck logs, the court-of-inquiry file, and builder records are undigitized leads (ev-11).
