    Finding
Documented for this hull: laid down 6 March 1942 at the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard; launched 20 July 1942 (sponsor Miss Katherine Eugenia McKee); commissioned 18 September 1942, Comdr. W. G. Ebert. Eight war patrols; sank seaplane tender Kamikawa Maru, passenger-cargo Kansai Maru, tanker Nippon Maru, cargo ship Tokyo Maru, and Japanese submarine I-168 (reported in text as I-24); damaged light cruiser Agano. On 7 April 1944 a near-miss aerial depth bomb caused severe hull deformation and a toxic-smoke fire; she reached Seeadler Harbor, Manus, on 16 April for emergency repairs, shifted to Milne Bay 22 April, then proceeded to Pearl Harbor for a thorough overhaul. Lost on her eighth patrol - last heard from 9 November 1944; Japanese records indicate attacks south of Tokyo Bay on 11 November 1944; struck from the Navy list 28 April 1945. Seven battle stars.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. NavSource photo captions attribute her permanent repair to Hunter's Point Navy Yard while DANFS reads Pearl Harbor - variance logged, DANFS adopted. Live NHHC page pattern returned 404 batch-wide; verbatim transcription used.

    Finding
NavSource supplements: sunk on 8th patrol by depth charge south of Tokyo Bay, 11 November 1944, all hands lost (83 per ComSubForPac loss report); struck from the Naval Register 28 April 1945. BuShips war-damage report summary documents the 7 April 1944 depth-bomb damage as 'the most severe known to have been survived by any U.S. submarine during World War II'; temporary repairs in ARD-9 at Milne Bay made her seaworthy; photo captions attribute permanent repair and refit to Hunter's Point Navy Yard (DANFS reads Pearl Harbor).

    Finding
Construction at Portsmouth Navy Yard (Mar-Sep 1942) and one documented Navy-yard repair/overhaul in 1944 following severe battle damage (Pearl Harbor per DANFS; Hunter's Point per NavSource captions) define her asbestos-relevant disturbance windows. As a diesel-electric fleet boat she carried no boilers or steam plant; era-standard asbestos applications for the type were diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, and insulation around galley/refrigeration equipment. Lost November 1944 - no postwar custody window.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for SS-277. Names era-standard applications for diesel-electric boats and the hull's documented yard events as disturbance pathways, not confirmed installed materials; establishes no quantities and no exposure for any individual. The 1944 repair yard attribution (Pearl Harbor vs Hunter's Point) is unresolved.

    Finding
A docketed asbestos personal-injury opinion recounts that after USS Thresher's 1963 loss the Navy created the SUBSAFE program, which issued procurement specification MIL-I-24244 covering asbestos-containing insulation for submarines - court-documented evidence that asbestos-containing insulation was specified in the submarine construction and maintenance regime.

    Population
Navy submarine construction/maintenance trades, SUBSAFE era
    Limitations
Documents the spec regime only; names no vessel as an exposure site. Postdates this hull's entire existence - she was lost November 1944, nearly two decades before SUBSAFE; the spec never governed this vessel. Does not establish exposure, causation, quantity, or eligibility.

    Finding
The Gato class's documented ship-level asbestos landscape: Dryfka v. Trane US recites a Navy reservist's alleged asbestos exposure aboard USS Drum (SS-228) as a reserve instructor at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard May 1966-Feb 1967; Lyautey v. Alfa Laval attaches exposure sheets listing USS Cavalla (SS-244) among Navy jobsites (1954-1974 window); and the Galveston Daily News reported in 2020 that asbestos had been found in the public areas of museum boat Cavalla (SS-244), with an approved abatement. All are pleading-stage or press-stage items for sister hulls, not this vessel. No pleading naming this vessel was located.
