    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The Wayback capture of the official NHHC text reads 'commissioned on 25 November 1936'; the HyperWar/ibiblio transcription of the same entry reads 26 November - a transcription error; 25 November is carried (conflict noted in gaps). Berth given as X-9 in DANFS; the commanding officer's action report transcription reads X-0 - carried in gaps.

Dedicated official BuShips damage narrative for this hull: torpedo hit(s) at 2306-1/2 on 6 October 1943 off Vella Lavella at about frame 40 starboard (probable second hit frame 30 port); bow severed completely forward of the bridge and floated aft, bending the starboard propeller and shaft; engineering plant intact and operable in split configuration; narrative references 'the forward bulkhead of the forward fireroom' shored 'between the bulkhead and No. 1 boiler'; ship proceeded ~10 knots to Purvis Bay (arrived 1352, 8 October). Repair chain: temporary stub bow by Aristaeus (ARB-1) at Purvis Bay; Noumea ARD-2 drydock 1-29 December extending the temporary bow to the keel; Navy Yard, Mare Island arrival 24 January 1944; during the availability the ship received 'alterations amounting practically to modernization' - a dual-purpose 5-inch/38 battery (two twins, one single), Mark 37 director with updated fire-control radar, modern open bridge; returned to service 20 April 1944.

Wartime crew (survivors of 49 lost); Aristaeus repair crew; ARD-2 and Mare Island Navy Yard shipyard workers 1943-44
    Limitations
Documents combat damage and the repair/modernization chain aboard this hull - the type of yard work that disturbs machinery-space and structural materials - but identifies no insulation materials, fiber content, or asbestos. Machinery-space detail (fireroom, No. 1 boiler) documents plant layout, not asbestos presence.

    Finding
Official BuShips repair manual presents this hull as its exemplar case for temporary bow structure: at Purvis Bay (no drydock) Aristaeus (ARB-1) removed all structure forward of frame 51 (keel to second platform), forward of frame 55 (main deck to second platform), and forward of frame 52-1/2 (above main deck); replaced/repaired transverse bulkhead frame 59, web frame 55, shell plating and longitudinals frames 55-59; reinforced bulkheads in compartments A-2F through A-11F; fabricated a temporary bow above the first platform and a temporary deckhouse bulkhead at frame 53; and conducted an inclining experiment. At Noumea in ARD-2 the temporary bow was carried below the waterline with straight shapes and flat plate and bulkhead 55 was stiffened.

    Limitations
Documents the scale of forward-area structural reconstruction aboard this hull, not materials content; no asbestos or insulation reference. The chapter narrative dates the action 'night of 7-8 October 1943' while the chapter's own data block, DANFS, and WDR-50 all give 6 October - transcription/editing discrepancy carried in gaps.

    Finding
The BuShips report's own reference list cites retrievable-on-request hull-specific primary documents: (a) C.O. Selfridge action report DD357/A16-3 Serial 004 (14 Oct 1943); (b) C.O. Selfridge war damage report DD357/A9/L11-1 Serial 006 (17 Oct 1943); (c) C.O. Aristaeus report of temporary repairs ARB-1/L11 (25 Nov 1943); (d) Comdt. Navy Yard Mare Island supplementary war damage report DD357/L11-1 Serial 12503 (20 Mar 1944); (e) same, Serial 13866 (5 Jun 1944). Separately, NARA RG 19 General Information Books hold per-vessel material specifications as a hull-level archival lead (same lead carried on other Atlas records).

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a 1,850-ton Porter-class steam destroyer leader built 1933-36 would have carried period-standard thermal insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing typical of Navy steam construction of the era. Builder New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J., is documented at yard level in the Atlas shipyard dataset (evidence_tier 1): named products include Pabco Six-Ply Super Caltemp block (15% chrysotile), Ehret 85% magnesia insulation, Johns-Manville Transite panels, asbestos gaskets and packing, asbestos-coated welding rods, and Bakelite panels, alongside cohort findings of elevated mesothelioma and asbestosis risk among yard workers.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - establishes the construction environment and era material norms, not asbestos presence aboard this specific hull. No ship-specific insulation specification, survey, or abatement record was located. The yard dataset's product identifications derive from litigation and hygiene records covering the yard generally, not the DD-357 build contract.

    Finding
CourtListener opinion-index search for the exact phrase "USS Selfridge" returned zero results (count 0, authenticated API v4 response, 2026-09-27). The RECAP docket-layer queries for "USS Selfridge" / "DD-357" could not be completed in this session - the fleet-wide request pacer returned stand-down responses on each docket attempt; web pre-screening surfaced only law-firm listicle pages (banned sources) and name collisions with Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located, but the docket layer is unverified rather than clear.

    Limitations
Partial sweep: opinion index clear; RECAP docket layer unverified due to pacer stand-down (see search_ledger sl-07/-08). 'Selfridge' collides with Selfridge ANGB (former Selfridge AFB), Michigan, which has its own asbestos-litigation footprint - any future hits require hull-attribution screening. Absence of located litigation is not evidence that exposure did not occur or that no claim was ever filed.
