    Finding
NHHC DANFS identifies Sharkey (Destroyer No. 281; DD-281) as Clemson class with complement 122. Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation at Squantum, Massachusetts laid her down on 14 April 1919; she was launched on 12 August 1919 and commissioned on 28 November 1919. She entered Norfolk Navy Yard on 22 July 1929 for overhaul but was ordered decommissioned, was towed to Philadelphia Navy Yard on 2 October 1929, decommissioned there on 1 May 1930, struck on 22 October 1930, and sold for scrapping on 17 January 1931.

    Finding
DANFS records Boston repairs in 1920, Boston Navy Yard repairs beginning 2 December 1922, Philadelphia Navy Yard periods in 1923-24, Boston overhaul from 3 March to 14 June 1924, Norfolk Navy Yard turbine repair in 1925, Norfolk overhaul in early 1926, and Norfolk overhaul from 29 July to 2 October 1928. These are ship-specific research windows for yard records.

Ship's crew and yard workers; identities and tasks unverified
    Limitations
Yard dates and turbine repair do not establish use, removal, or exposure to asbestos. The cited history does not identify insulation or gasket composition, and no yard work package was reviewed.

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 lists Sharkey (DD-281) naval deck logs for 28 November 1919 through 1 May 1930, matching her commissioned service interval. The listing identifies an archival path to check dates of 1920s yard activity.

    1919-11-28 through 1930-05-01
    Limitations
The index confirms a logbook listing, not that individual logs were opened here. NARA states deck logs do not directly document asbestos; they may narrow dates for material-record research.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's naval asbestos research guide identifies RG 19, Entry P 9, destroyer, destroyer escort and frigate General Information Books and related documentation (1907-1961), and describes ship engineering drawings and specifications as possible routes to material-level documentation. The guide states that GIB holdings are incomplete by hull.

    Study period
1907-1961 (series coverage); Sharkey served 1919-1930
    Limitations
This is a finding aid, not a retrieved Sharkey GIB or drawing. Much of the guide discusses Navy records from 1941 onward, after Sharkey's disposal. No series entry establishes that this hull's book survives or that asbestos was aboard.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Authenticated CourtListener API v4 opinion and RECAP docket searches for the exact name "USS Sharkey" and hull number "DD-281" returned zero opinion hits and zero exact-name docket hits. The hull-number docket search returned three index hits in two marine-contract matters and one bankruptcy matter; none identifies Sharkey or asbestos in returned metadata/snippets. The three hits are classified as name/numeric collisions in the index, not qualifying asbestos litigation for this hull.

2026-09-27 search; returned dockets filed 2007-2015
    Limitations
This is a negative result within four public CourtListener index searches, not proof that no lawsuit exists. The three hull-number docket hits were classified from returned index metadata and snippets only; underlying documents were not opened, so any buried numerical reference remains unverified. No exposure finding, causation, or legal eligibility is established.
