    Finding
DANFS record for this hull: laid down 17 February 1942 by Norfolk Navy Yard, Norfolk Va.; launched 18 April 1942 (sponsor Mrs. Grosvenor Bemis); commissioned 7 February 1943, Lt. Comdr. Louis A. Bryan in command. North Africa convoy June 1943; Husky/Gela fire support 10 July 1943; hit amidships by a 500-pound bomb during night air raid at Palermo 4 August 1943 - two main machinery spaces flooded, all power lost, 9 killed and 20 wounded; emergency repairs Palermo, drydocking Malta, one-screw return to New York arriving 9 October 1943 for permanent repairs. Normandy bombardment group (opened fire 0550, 6 June 1944; off beaches over a month); southern France air cover August 1944; stateside overhaul from 6 September 1944; Panama Canal transit 1 February 1945; escorted Mississippi to Okinawa; Tori-Shima support 12 May 1945; kamikaze strike at 0010 on 29 May 1945 - 30-foot hole in starboard side, own depth charge exploded, towed to Kerama Retto by ATR-9, 35 killed/missing and 25 wounded; emergency repairs to 15 July; arrived Puget Sound Navy Yard 10 August 1945; BuShips decided 17 August not to repair; decommissioned 16 November 1945; struck from Navy list 28 November 1945; sold to National Metals and Steel Co., Terminal Island, Calif., hulk removed 28 September 1947. Four battle stars. Spec block: 1,630 t, 348 ft 3 in., 36 ft 1 in. beam, 17 ft 5 in. draft, 37.4 kt, complement 276, Gleaves class.

Norfolk Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design complement 276)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Conflicts with secondary sources (NavSource) on decommissioning date (DANFS 16 Nov 1945 vs. NavSource 19 Oct 1945) and disposal date (DANFS hulk removed 28 Sep 1947 vs. NavSource sold 27 Sep 1948) are carried in gaps rather than reconciled; WDR-51 gives New York arrival 10 October 1943 vs. DANFS 9 October. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404.

    Finding
Contemporaneous official BuShips damage analysis devoted to this hull: on 4 August 1943 a German 250-kg GP bomb passed through the midship deckhouse at frame 101, severed the auxiliary steam line in the after fireroom, and detonated below the hull under bulkhead 103 between the forward engineroom and after fireroom; both machinery spaces flooded, all propulsive and electric power lost (ruptured steam lines), No. 3 boiler superheater and tube nest, No. 1 turbo-generator and condenser, and evaporators wrecked; forward main engines knocked out of alignment. Documents emergency power restoration at Palermo (temporary steam/exhaust/condensate connections run on deck), drydock repairs at Malta (structural replacement, machinery salvage and flushing, piping tested/repaired: main steam, auxiliary steam, auxiliary exhaust, drains, fuel transfer, feed systems; 75-kW diesel generator installed), and transit under one shaft to Navy Yard New York arriving 10 October 1943 with permanent repairs completed 6 December 1943. References cited by the report include the ship's own damage report (C.O. SHUBRICK ltr. DD639/L11-1, Serial 031, 15 September 1943) and COMDT NY NYK Damage Report of 18 October 1943.

1943 (damage and repairs); report dated 1947
    Population
Ship's crew in action; ship's repair personnel; Malta dockyard workers; Navy Yard New York repair trades 1943
    Limitations
Establishes extensive damage to and repair of the machinery spaces, boilers, and steam piping aboard this specific hull - the systems and spaces where period insulation existed - but the report never mentions asbestos or insulation materials by composition; whether any work disturbed or replaced asbestos-containing material is inference, not documented. The May 1945 kamikaze damage is not covered in this report (Shubrick's section covers the 1943 bomb only).

    Finding
Official U.S. Navy (NAVSEA) page carries a photograph of this hull in dry dock at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and captions it: the 1,630-ton destroyer USS Shubrick (DD-639) was constructed in 1942 'in record time' at NNSY, one of two destroyers the yard built among the five classes of ships it produced or modernized supporting the Normandy invasion; describes her D-Day beach-clearing support and escort/fire-support/ASW duty into July 1944. Independently confirms the builder-yard attribution.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/design inference only: a Gleaves-class destroyer built at Norfolk Navy Yard in 1942-43 with four superheated boilers and geared steam turbines would have carried period-standard asbestos applications - boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck coverings - and the builder yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2; product list includes boiler and turbine insulation, pipe insulation/lagging, Marinite, Transite, Thermobestos, Kaylo, Unibestos, gaskets/packing, deck coverings, welding blankets). Battle damage to machinery spaces (ev-02) and the 1943 New York Navy Yard rebuild plausibly disturbed such insulation, but no source documents material composition for this hull.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - not a ship-specific finding. No ship-specific survey, material schedule, or abatement record was located; nothing here establishes that any individual aboard DD-639 was exposed. Yard-product documentation describes Norfolk Naval Shipyard generally, not this hull's bill of materials.

CourtListener sweeps located no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull: '"USS Shubrick"' returned zero hits on both the opinion and RECAP docket indexes; '"DD-639"' returned zero opinion hits and 6 RECAP docket hits that are all identifier collisions (ERISA, RICO, habeas, labor, bankruptcy, prisoner-civil-rights dockets whose indexed text contains no naval, vessel, or asbestos content); '"Shubrick"' (opinions, 139 hits) returned only surname collisions (Shubrick v. Wing and its progeny - NY public-assistance litigation; Shubrick v. Van Camp Products; People v. Shubrick; executor/estate cases) with no naval-vessel or asbestos content on review of result text.

    Finding
Un-pulled primary documents exist for this hull: WDR-51 Section VIII cites (a) C.O. SHUBRICK ltr. DD639/L11-1, Serial 031 of 15 September 1943 (the ship's own war damage report) and (c) COMDT NY NYK Damage Report of 18 October 1943 (New York Navy Yard repair documentation). These, plus deck logs (NARA RG 24) and any RG 19 General Information Book entries for DD-639, are the concrete archival path for hull-level material detail. A catalog.archives.gov search on 'Shubrick' on 2026-09-27 returned no digitized result.
