- Special List 44, Sicard entries; asbestos research guide, RG 19 and Cartographic Branch sections: https://www.archives.gov/research/military/navy/guided-topics/asbestos
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 indexes Sicard deck logs under DD-346, DM-21, and AG-100 in two date ranges covering 9 June 1920 through 21 November 1945. NARA's asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 ship general information books, hull-number-arranged engineering drawings, and S39 insulation/lagging and S48 piping drawing groups as routes to material research.

- Limitations
- The index verifies log holdings, not their contents. NARA explicitly cautions that deck logs and muster rolls do not directly document asbestos; no Sicard log, general information book, or drawing was inspected for this batch.

[4]U.S. GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (1979), enclosure I, Navy response dated 5 January 1979 [gao]
- Locator
- Enclosure I, Navy letter of 5 January 1979, first page
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A 1979 Navy response reproduced by GAO describes asbestos applications in Navy ship machinery and piping insulation, gaskets and packing, deck material, and other components. This is Navy fleet context only; the response does not name Sicard, which had been sold for scrap in 1946.

- Limitations
- The 1979 statement describes ships then in service and broader Navy material practices; it cannot establish any asbestos item or exposure aboard a ship scrapped decades earlier. It does not raise Sicard's documentation level.

- Locator
- Search ledger in this record
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No Sicard-specific asbestos survey, insulation specification, abatement record, or asbestos litigation document was located in the public NHHC, NARA guide/index, GAO, and search sources completed for this batch; the CourtListener sweep remains incomplete because the authenticated fleet pacer repeatedly reported its request budget momentarily spent before any API request was sent.

- Limitations
- A bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener has not been completed and no physical archive holdings were reviewed. Update this row if the authenticated sweep completes.

[6]NHHC DANFS, 'Sicard (DD-346)' [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Service narrative, Asiatic Fleet through 1944 overhaul paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS records periodic overhauls at Cavite while with the Asiatic Fleet, Mare Island while operating on the West Coast, extensive Pearl Harbor Navy Yard repairs after a 1935 collision, and conversion to a light minelayer at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard in 1937. Sicard was reclassified DM-21 on 20 June 1937; she was under overhaul at Pearl Harbor when attacked on 7 December 1941 and completed that overhaul on 28 January 1942. Later repairs lasted to 29 July 1943 after a collision near Attu, and an Alameda overhaul ended 20 September 1944.

- Limitations
- These are documented yard and overhaul events; DANFS gives no asbestos work scope, product identity, worker task, or exposure measurement. The 1943 repair-yard location is stated as San Francisco, not a named shipyard.
