- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS names Lt. Comdr. H. L. Baron, USNR, as commanding at the 8 April 1944 full commissioning - NavSource's commanding-officer table names LT. John S. Meddaugh at both 1944 commissionings and places Baron in command 10 Nov-12 Dec 1945; conflict unresolved (see gaps). Campaign: Consolidation of Solomon Islands (northern Solomons), January-February 1945. Occupation service in the Far East 17 September-21 November 1945. Decommissioned 14 March 1946 at New York; struck 17 April 1946; sold for scrapping 25 July 1947 to A. G. Vincent; one battle star. Ribbons: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (1), World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp). Specifications: displacement 3,960 t (lt) / 4,100 t (fl); length 328'; beam 50'; draft 11'2"; speed 11.6 kts; complement 37 officers + 246 enlisted; largest boom capacity 50 t; two LCVP; armament one single 3"/50 cal DP mount, two quad 40mm AA mounts, eight single 20mm AA mounts; fuel: diesel 4,480 bbls, gasoline 62,000 gals; propulsion two GM 12-567A diesels, Falk main reduction gears, two propellers 1,800 shp, twin rudders; generators 3x 100kW DC + 2x 100kW 450V AC. Photo captions place her in Chesapeake Bay near her Baltimore conversion yard 12 August 1944 (BuShips photo 19-N-69719, camouflage measure 31/11L) and at anchor Baltimore harbor circa Aug-Sep 1944 (80-G-248513, 80-G-248511). Its commanding-officer table (courtesy Wolfgang Hechler and Ron Reeves) lists: LT. John S. Meddaugh, USNR, 8 Apr-29 Apr 1944 and again from 9 Aug 1944 (end date misprinted '20 April 1944'); LT. Murdoch Jerome Finlayson, USNR, shown from 9 Aug 1944 to 10 Nov 1945 (overlapping Meddaugh - internally inconsistent); LCDR. Henry Louis Baron, USNR, 10 Nov-12 Dec 1945; LT. Henry B. - Documents the designation and conversion sequence for this hull: the reclassification of AGP 10-11 from LSTs was approved 3 November 1943, and the LST designated in that action for AGP-11, LST-519, was changed to LST-604 on 18 December 1943. Ship note: 'Ex LST-604 18 Dec 43. Ferry commission as LST-604 3-29 Apr 44 (from reduced to full commission at New Orleans 8 Apr 44). Converted by Maryland DD, Baltimore (begun 1 May 44).' Class notes: all units of the class except AGP-5 were converted by Maryland Drydock Co., Baltimore; hulls built on the Mississippi were taken to New Orleans for three days of voyage repairs and stores, then delivered to Baltimore by combat crews with a three-day shakedown at St. Andrews Bay, Florida; ships transited under their LST numbers and began using their AGP numbers only upon decommissioning and entering the conversion yard (for AGP-11, that date was 1 May 44); Gibbs and Cox was design agent for the LST conversion designs; the class was designed with shops and equipment for maintenance of one MTB squadron, initially with two ten-ton booms, to which a 50-ton 'A' frame hoist was added. Class data: displacement 2,028 light / 4,100 lim tons; 328' oa x 50' x 11.2' lim; 1,800 HP GM diesels, 2 screws, 11.6 kts; complement 240 (1944); original armament 1-3"/50, 2-40mmQ, 8-20mm (1943-44: AGP 4-5, 10-11).

- Finding
- CLARIFICATION of the designation chain: the DANFS LST-604 stub states 'LST-604 was redesignated AGP-11 and named Silenus (q.v.) on 18 December 1943.' Read against the fuller record this compresses two events: the AGP-11 conversion allocation was approved 3 November 1943 while the hull was still designated LST-519, and the hull was renumbered LST-604 on 18 December 1943 (Shipscribe class notes, compiled from BuShips/OpNav records); the ship was classified AGP-11 and named Silenus at her 9 August 1944 recommissioning (DANFS Silenus entry; NavSource). The LST-519 designation freed by this hull's renumbering went to a different Chicago Bridge & Iron hull that completed as USS Calhoun County (LST-519).

Finlayson (USNR)' followed by AGP-12 Acontius, with MTB Squadron Thirty-One (ComMTBRon 31, Lt. J. M. Searles: PT 453-455, 467-469) and MTB Squadron Thirty-Two (ComMTBRon 32, Lt. R. C. Wark (USNR): PT 474-476, 480-482) in the same organization block. Places this hull in active Pacific tender service under Lt. Cdr. M. J. - A diesel-powered tank landing ship hull built October 1943-March 1944 and converted May-August 1944 sits inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos era. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers - the steam-plant lagging pathway does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a diesel LST/AGP of this period were: GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The AGP conversion added interior rework scope (tender shops, accommodation for squadron support, hoist machinery) at a Baltimore commercial yard during the peak asbestos-use years.

- CORRECTION/COMPLICATION of the disposal record: DANFS and NavSource record 'sold to A. G. Vincent on 25 July 1947 for scrap.' The Shipscribe compilation of Maritime Commission disposal records records the same 25 July 1947 sale differently: 'Sold by MC as LST-604 for mercantile service, merc. ARZELL III (or II) 1948, became PAULA 1956.' The pattern is consistent across her sister conversions (Varuna>LST-14 merc. GUARAUNA 1948; Callisto>LST-966 merc. ELENA 1949, lost as DAYTONA 1955; Brontes>LST-1125 merc. BARBARA 1947, lost as XALAPA 1959; Chiron>LST-1133 merc. ALTAMAR 1948, lost 1960) - i.e., MC sold several of these hulls into merchant service rather than for demolition. - Finding
- Archival leads located but not digitized this session: the BuShips and wartime still-picture series (RG 19-LCM, RG 80-G) hold confirmed construction/completion photography of this hull (19-N-69719, 80-G-248513, 80-G-248511 - cataloged via NHHC and transcribed in NavSource/Shipscribe captions); RG 24 deck logs for LST-604 and Silenus (1944-46) exist at NARA but are not publicly digitized. Conversion work-package documentation (Maryland Drydock, May-Aug 1944) would likely sit in BuShips contract/completion files - not located.

- Limitations
- Archival lead only. NARA catalog is JS-rendered and could not be directly searched from this session; photo numbers are NHHC-cataloged (80-G-248513) or transcribed from NavSource/Shipscribe captions. No deck log, work package, or material record was reviewed - the open asbestos-relevant leads are the conversion work package and deck logs.
