- Finding
- NHHC records Mediterranean and Black Sea duty from 1920, transfer to the Asiatic Station in 1921, a second Asiatic Fleet tour beginning in 1929, and periodic overhauls at Cavite Navy Yard. Whipple (DD-217) rammed Smith Thompson on 14 April 1936; Barker (DD-213) towed her to Subic Bay. Deemed not worth repair, she was decommissioned at Olongapo on 15 May, stricken on 19 May, and sunk at sea off Subic Bay on 25 July 1936.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A contemporaneous naval shipbuilding health survey published in 1946 says asbestos blankets were among materials used on destroyer turbines before development of amosite felt began in 1934. This is destroyer-era context only; the article does not name Smith Thompson.

- Population
- Naval shipyard pipe-covering workers in the 1945 survey; historical destroyer turbine context
- Limitations
- The surveyed shipyards and vessels were not Smith Thompson or identified as her builder. The pre-1934 turbine reference is a general historical statement, not an inventory for this hull. It does not prove material aboard, exposure, product identity, or quantity for DD-212.

- Limitations
- A series description is not a reviewed DD-212 item; no asbestos claim follows from the existence of these archives. The NARA research guide chiefly addresses 1941-1961, after this ship's 1936 disposal.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The reviewed public NHHC DANFS entry, NHHC ZC file index, NARA research guides, and 1946 destroyer-era survey do not document asbestos material aboard Smith Thompson. No hull-specific asbestos survey, installation record, abatement record, or exposure finding was located in those reviewed sources.

- This is a scoped search result, not proof asbestos was absent. NARA's underlying DD-212 records and the NHHC ZC file were not reviewed. CourtListener litigation results are outside this negative finding.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener v4 searches for the exact vessel name 'USS Smith Thompson' returned zero results in both the opinion and RECAP docket indexes on 27 September 2026. The broader 'Smith Thompson' opinion search returned name/surname collisions among direct title matches, not a verified DD-212 case.

- 2026-09-27 search
- Limitations
- The exact-name index result does not prove that no lawsuit or asbestos claim exists. The DD-212 hull-number searches did not obtain a pacing token and remain incomplete. Broad name matches beyond direct first-page title collisions were not individually screened; no litigation stage or exposure finding can be assigned.

- Specifications block and opening vessel-history paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC identifies Smith Thompson as Clemson-class destroyer DD-212, built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia, launched 14 July 1919, and commissioned 10 December 1919. The DANFS specifications block gives a complement of 121 and design speed of 35 knots. The entry says she was laid down on 24 March but omits the year.
