- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS ends the record at the 15 Mar 1961 disposal approval - final fate unstated. Conflicts with NavSource on the post-1949 status sequence ('placed out of service 1 Feb 1956' vs Atlantic Reserve Fleet Oct 1949) and the naming date (1 vs 15 Feb 1956) - carried in gaps. 'Fate unknown' vs shipbuildinghistory's 'sold 1961' also carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos content.

- Production-table row for this hull: 'PC 603 | Consolidated SB | Morris Heights NY | 463 | 173 | 1-Oct-42 | Named Solvay 1956, sold 1961.' The same table documents the yard's PC-461-series output (interleaved with other builders). The compiler's yard history documents Consolidated Shipbuilding, Morris Heights (the merged Charles L. Seabury Co. / Gas Engine & Power Co. 'Speedway Shipyard' on Matthewson Road): prewar luxury-yacht builder, roughly 3,000 tradespeople during WWII, closed Morris Heights after the war (moved to City Island), ceased active shipbuilding 1958; the yard site is now part of Roberto Clemente State Park.

- Operational detail for this hull: ordered 20 September 1941. Wartime CO roster: P M Flagg USNR (Oct 1942-early 1943); Gerald Sellen Hewitt USNR (early-mid 1943); Lt. Edward Dimmick Gasson USNR (mid 1943-early 1944 and again ear-mid 1944-mid 1944); Lt.(jg) Samuel Powel Jr. USNR (early 1944 and mid 1944-early 1945); J Jinishian USNR (early-late 1945). Notable events document Pearl Harbor submarine-escort duty in 1944: escorted USS Skate in 7 Jan, USS Swordfish in 7 Feb, USS Searaven out 15 Aug and in 25 Dec, and joined USS Dragonet/Haddo/Gar 27 Dec 1944 - consistent with DANFS's Hawaiian Sea Frontier assignment.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A PC-461-class steel patrol craft built May-October 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this period were: diesel-exhaust manifold and muffler lagging; thermal insulation on hot machinery and piping; compressed-asbestos gaskets on engine, exhaust, and piping flanges; valve stem packing; and electrical insulation - all within the confined 173-ft machinery spaces. The diesel plant carries no boilers or steam turbines, so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; total installed insulation volume was much smaller than on steam vessels.

- Consolidated Shipbuilding construction trades (1942); engine-room ratings and maintenance crew (1942-49); yard/base trades during availabilities; disposal/scrapping workforce (1961)
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, work package, or survey located for PC-603. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. Diesel-propelled hull means the asbestos footprint plausibly differs (smaller, exhaust/auxiliary-focused) from steam vessels of the era.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-solvay-pc603-01 through -10
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Solvay (PC-603) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet-wide pacing limiter returned budget-spent on every attempt across ~1 hour (9 attempts; ~17 concurrent ships sessions sharing a ~58/hr token bucket against the 1,400/day account cap); logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is non-qualifying marketing content - navyshipexposure.com's PC-461 class article (asserts class asbestos content without primary sourcing and misdescribes the documented Fairbanks Morse plant as four GM diesels) and mesotheliomahope.com's patrol-boat category page - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference remains reasonable, and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (fleet pacing blocked, not run). Deck logs (NARA RG 24), Consolidated Shipbuilding build/work records, and any disposal-sale contract are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

[9]Village of Solvay official site ('the village is named after the Solvay brothers, Belgian inventors of the chemical process employed by the Solvay Process Company, formerly the major industry of the village'); corroborated by Wikipedia 'Solvay, New York' and 'Solvay Process Company' [other_primary]
- Locator

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- COLLISION GUARD: the Navy named this hull for the village of Solvay, Onondaga County, NY (DANFS: 'a village in Onondaga County in central New York five miles west of Syracuse'). The village itself was renamed from Geddesburgh for the Solvay brothers/Solvay Process Company soda-ash plant. 'Solvay' is therefore a high-collision term in litigation and jobsite research: New York asbestos and personal-injury dockets containing 'Solvay' typically denote the Solvay Process / Allied Chemical-Solvay industrial worksite or Solvay corporate entities, not this vessel. Any 'Solvay' litigation hit must be classified non-qualifying unless it identifies the ship or a naval context.
