    Finding
Asbestos litigation record naming this hull: plaintiff Charles Krik (USN 1954-c.1970; lung cancer) alleged asbestos exposure from removing Owens-Illinois insulation aboard Navy vessels plus two weeks' refinery heater work. His deposition service summary - as recited in Crane Co.'s RADM Sargent expert report (E.D. Pa. Doc. 116) - placed him aboard USS SPROSTON (DD-577) approximately 1954-1957 in the fireroom, advancing Fireman Apprentice (FA) toward Boilerman (BT). Sargent opined that Krik's assignment 'serving in the fire rooms in USS SPROSTON (DD-577) and USS JENKINS (DD-447) placed him in a working environment in close proximity to many piping systems and other propulsion equipment that the Navy specified be insulated with asbestos containing thermal insulation.' At the April-May 2015 jury trial before Judge Shah, Owens-Illinois's exhibit list (N.D. Ill. Doc. 418) included ship-specific exhibits 'Synopsis of Machinery and Hull Data - USS Sproston' (OI 1038, admitted/discussed Trial Tr. 1714, 29 Apr 2015) and 'USS Sproston Identification of Equipment & Manufactures' (OI 1039, Tr. 1714). DISPOSITION: after the 7-day trial the jury found cigarette smoking (1.5 packs/day x 30 years) the sole cause of Krik's cancer - defense verdict for Owens-Illinois and Exxon Mobil; the Seventh Circuit affirmed in all respects (870 F.3d 669), rejecting Krik's appeal on expert-exclusion and juror-investigation grounds.

    Limitations
Trial-stage record, not an exposure finding: the shipboard-exposure claim exists here as plaintiff's own service testimony recited by a DEFENSE expert (Sargent, for Crane Co.) plus defense exhibits - the jury never found exposure aboard Sproston; it found cigarettes the sole cause, and the 7th Cir. affirmance rested on expert/juror issues, not exposure. No adjudicated finding of asbestos presence or exposure aboard this hull. Sargent's asbestos nexus is a Navy-specification inference ('specified be insulated'), not a hull materials survey. Krik's service also covered USS Jenkins, Bryce Canyon, Vulcan and shore/yard duty - Sproston was one of several alleged exposure sources, and the verdict foreclosed his causation theory entirely. Trial-exhibit content (OI 1038/1039 machinery data) exists but was not retrieved - titles establish ship-specific machinery documentation was in evidence.

    Finding type

    Finding
Product/equipment-identification element of the Krik record: the defendants' trial exhibits for this hull included 'USS Sproston Identification of Equipment & Manufactures' (OI 1039) - a ship-specific equipment-manufacturer identification document - and 'Synopsis of Machinery and Hull Data - USS Sproston' (OI 1038). The broader case alleged exposure to Owens-Illinois asbestos insulation (Kaylo-line insulation removal aboard Navy vessels, per the 7th Cir. recital) and Crane Co. was a named defendant filing the Sargent expert disclosure; Sargent's opinion ties fireroom work aboard DD-577 to Navy-specified asbestos-containing thermal insulation on piping and propulsion equipment. Fletcher-class machinery was 4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers and 2 GE geared steam-turbine sets (NavSource hull data) - consistent with boiler/turbine product lines litigated aboard this hull.

    Limitations
Trial-exhibit titles only - the contents of OI 1038/1039 (which manufacturers/equipment were identified for Sproston) were not retrieved; the equipment-ID work product exists but is unsummarized here. Defendant's-exhibit provenance (Owens-Illinois list) means these were trial exhibits, not plaintiff-alleged product findings. Finding
DoD dose-reconstruction record naming this hull: Sproston (DDE-577) was one of seven naval vessels whose crews' radiation doses were reconstructed for Operation GREENHOUSE, the four-detonation atmospheric test series at Enewetak Atoll (shots DOG 8 April, EASY 21 April, GEORGE 9 May, ITEM 25 May 1951; Joint Task Force 3; ~10,500 DOD participants). Per DNA 6034F: Sproston arrived Enewetak 8 March 1951 and departed 27 May for Pearl Harbor, serving in TU 3.3.2 (Convoy and Escort - escorted USS Curtiss AV-4 carrying device components) and TU 3.3.4 (Surface Patrol - antisubmarine/security patrol around the atoll for all four shots; also Project 8.3 radarscope photography under TG 3.1). Fallout encounters documented from log entries: DOG - fallout 2,500 yards southwest of Enewetak Island between 1230-1300, decontamination begun 1600; EASY - 0.01275 R/hr measured at 2300 on station, normal by 1600 next day; GEORGE - not exposed; ITEM - minor fallout 1900-2300. Ten crew members wore film badges; in 1951 Navy medical authorities assigned most non-badged Sproston crewmembers a dose of 1.000 R for fallout exposure - the six ships' assigned exposures ranged from 0.334 R (USS LST-859) to 1.1 R (USS Cabildo LSD-16 and USS Sproston, the highest). DNA-TR-82-15 reconstructs per-shot shipboard intensities and crew doses for Sproston in dedicated figures and tables (patrol positions, ship intensity following DOG/EASY/ITEM, film-badge dose comparisons); its abstract reports average shipboard doses across the seven vessels of 0.13-1.14 rem. Both commanding officers of Sproston and Walker complained their crews - largely reservists recalled in September 1950 - received little radsafe training for the operation.

This is an IONIZING RADIATION exposure record, not asbestos documentation - it establishes no asbestos presence, quantity, or exposure aboard this hull and must not be cited as such. It is carried as the hull's only located ship-specific government exposure record (the 'atomic veteran' category) and corroborates DANFS's 'Atomic Bomb Test' participation. Per-shot dates are the report's local-time dates (MHT/UTC differ by a day in some secondary sources). DNA-TR-82-15's per-ship mean dose value for Sproston could not be cleanly extracted from the scanned OCR table; only the report's range and the DNA 6034F assigned-dose figures are carried.

Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 with a four-boiler/60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The Atlas Fletcher-class profile documents the design regime across 175 hulls built 1941-44. The builder (Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, Texas) is NOT among the 37 yards in the Atlas shipyard dataset, so no yard-level asbestos documentation attaches to the construction phase. Documented post-construction yard events on this hull do attach to dataset yards: Mare Island Naval Shipyard (1949-50 DDE conversion rip-out, photographed 13 May 1949), Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (five-month overhaul from March 1965, DANFS), and a Todd Ship floating drydock at Algiers, LA (17 May 1943, NavSource caption). Unnamed yards cover the July 1945 San Francisco overhaul, the early-1952 'shipyard' overhaul, and the December 1967-March 1968 Guam yard availability. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an unretrieved archival lead for hull-level specs.

Cal. 2:14-cv-08961, False Claims Act qui-tam - 'USS Sproston' appears inside the 332-page first amended complaint, likely a veteran-file reference; non-asbestos = OTHER LITIGATION/name-mention); (b) six further 'DD-577' docket collisions (Mass. v. Libertad receivables; Intellectual Ventures v. Motorola patent; Dumais FTCA; Pickett prisoner civil rights; Ariz. DES v. Wormuth APA; Fagan v. Honeywell) - docket/document-number collisions, none naming the vessel; (c) all 34 'Sproston' opinion hits are surname collisions (State v. Sproston, Sproston v. Quaker Oats, estate/divorce/probate matters) - none ship- or asbestos-related.

    Limitations
Sweep covers CourtListener's indexed opinion and RECAP corpora only; unindexed dockets, NYCAL/state-court filings, and unreported settlements are outside scope. 'Sproston' is a low-collision surface (uncommon surname; DD-173 is the only other hull and pre-dates asbestos litigation). The Krik naming is trial-stage allegation ending in defense verdict - see ev-01 limitations.

    Finding
No hull-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, materials inventory, or hazmat disclosure located for DD-577 in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The ship was stricken October 1968 and sold to a Taiwan scrapper in 1971 - before modern asbestos documentation practice - and never became a museum, so the museum-disclosure channel that produced ship-specific records for preserved hulls does not exist here. The ship IS named in qualifying asbestos litigation (Krik v. Crane Co., ev-01/ev-02 - trial-stage allegation, defense verdict affirmed) but no affirmative adjudicated exposure finding exists. The hull's only other ship-specific government exposure record is radiological (ev-05, Operation GREENHOUSE 1951).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level (ev-06, ev-07). The hull no longer exists (scrapped Taiwan 1971-72), so present-day ACM status is moot.
