    Limitations
DANFS documents construction, specifications, and service history - not materials or asbestos content. The HyperWar transcription contains typographical errors carried verbatim from scanning: namesake birth year reads '1934' (1834 per NavSource biography and every other account), 'Mobile Bay on 5 August 1964' (1864), and the first Teardrop kill reads 'U-1285' (U-1235 per NHHC H-047-1 and Frost's DANFS entry). Finding
NHHC official narrative of this hull's Operation Teardrop kills: at 2135 on 15 April 1945 Stanton (DE-247), in Croatan's (CVE-25) screen, detected a radar contact at 3,500 yards in heavy fog, closed to 1,000 yards and illuminated U-1235 running on the surface; the boat submerged and Stanton, assisted by Frost (DE-144), made three hedgehog attacks, hitting at 0333 on 16 April with explosions culminating in an unusually large underwater detonation - U-1235 lost with all hands on her second patrol. About forty minutes later Frost detected U-880 on the surface; after illumination and conning-tower hits the boat submerged, Frost gained sonar contact assisted by Stanton and Huse (DE-145), and at 0406 Stanton fired a hedgehog barrage producing a massive explosion felt aboard Croatan 15 nautical miles away - U-880 lost with all hands on her first patrol.

    Limitations
Official NHHC operational history corroborating this hull's combat record - not a materials or asbestos source. Kill order attribution differs from Frost's DANFS entry (which credits U-880 at 0114 then U-1235 at 0410); the NHHC H-gram sequence (U-1235 at 0333, then U-880 after 0406) is carried and the conflict is logged in gaps.

BuShips 1945 primary roster for this hull: STANTON, DE-247, design group FMR, built by Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, contract price $2,921,000 under contract signed 18 January 1942; keel laid 7 December 1942; launched 21 February 1943; preliminary completion June 1943; commissioned August 1943 (roster columns show 6 August acceptance / 7 August commission). Design-group-4 (FMR) machinery row: Fairbanks-Morse diesel reverse gear drive, 4 F.M. diesel engines, 6,000 shp, 2 shafts, boilers column 'None,' two 100 kW 450 V A.C. diesel ship's-service generators, trial speed 21.2 kt, design accommodations 15 officers + 201 enlisted, 3x3in/50cal DP. Sister Stewart (DE-238) appears in the same roster: FMR, Brown Shipbuilding, same contract price and contract date - same contract series.

Contemporaneous BuShips publication - authoritative for design-group machinery and contract/build dates; contains no materials or asbestos information. 'Boilers: None' is a design fact establishing the diesel plant; it does not enumerate non-propulsion insulation materials. Finding
Era/design inference for a diesel-powered escort built at a Houston yard in 1942-43: the FMR machinery plant - four Fairbanks-Morse diesels with reverse-gear drive, 6,000 shp, 2 shafts - has NO propulsion boilers and no steam system (BuShips design-group table), so the heavy steam-ship asbestos categories (boiler lagging, steam-line insulation) do not apply. Plausible period applications concentrate in diesel exhaust/muffler insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, fireproofing, and friction linings on deck machinery. Build date falls inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2: substitution did not begin until the early 1970s).

    Finding
Documented asbestos aboard a preserved Edsall-class sister hull built by the same yard under the same contract series: the Galveston Daily News reported that after mechanics preparing work in a machinery space aboard USS Stewart (DE-238) recommended an asbestos survey (October 2019), an environmental firm's survey found a potential asbestos hazard in the machinery-space and public areas; remediation company Separation Systems Consultants received approval to proceed with abatement of asbestos in the public areas of Stewart and USS Cavalla (SS-244), and the Galveston Park Board cited U.S. Navy inspection recommendations that a survey be conducted. USS Stewart is a Brown Shipbuilding-built Edsall-class (FMR) hull under the same 18 January 1942 contract series (BuShips Ships' Data roster) - class-level corroboration that Edsall-class construction carried asbestos-containing material.

Evidence about a sister hull (DE-238), NOT this hull: a museum-hull lifecycle DE-247 never had (sunk as target 1972). Documents asbestos aboard one Edsall-class ship as preserved; establishes nothing about DE-247's materials, quantity, or any individual exposure. Live article page returned HTTP 429 at fetch; content verified via indexed copy (same-day corroborating fetch by a parallel session). The article's machinery-space phrasing is loose; the survey covered a machinery space and public areas.

Deck logs document day-by-day operations, yard periods, and casualty reports - the substrate for verifying ship-specific work history. No preservation-era documentation can exist - the hull was sunk as a target in 1972 and was never a museum, memorial, or donated asset; the 1947-1970 reserve-fleet lay-up at Green Cove Springs produced no digitized hazmat record.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The hull no longer exists in recoverable form, so no present-day survey is possible; whether era materials aboard contained asbestos is undocumented in either direction. Construction-era yard records (Brown Shipbuilding, Houston), the unnamed May 1944 drydock yard, and Boston Navy Yard alteration work orders are paper leads only (ev-08). CourtListener coverage: name and hull-number sweeps complete with no qualifying litigation (ev-09); the supplemental unquoted-name query is pacing-deferred.
