    Finding
DANFS documents this hull by name: LST-542-class tank landing ship, laid down 3 February 1945 by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Seneca, Ill.; launched 2 May 1945, sponsored by Mrs. Evelyn B. Adams; commissioned 28 May 1945, Lt. Theodore R. Hopkins, D-V(G), USNR, in command. After shakedown she loaded supplies at New Orleans and sailed via Mobile and Galveston for Hawaii, transiting the Panama Canal 12 July 1945 and arriving Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, 1 August - where she lay when hostilities with Japan ceased. Assigned postwar to the Service Force, Atlantic Fleet, she ran training and logistics missions into 1954; decommissioned 11 February 1955 and assigned to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; redesignated Sublette County (LST-1144) 1 July 1955 after the Wyoming county; stricken from the Navy list 1 June 1960, 'never having performed any active service under that name'; transferred to the Republic of China in September 1961, serving as Chung Yek (LST-231).

Ship's company (~119 per DANFS header) plus embarked troops (147 berthing)
    Limitations
DANFS is a ship-history narrative; it contains no asbestos, hazmat, crew-health, or material-composition information and ends the record at transfer. Does not establish exposure, quantities, or post-transfer disposition. Romanization here is 'Chung Yek'; NavSource and Wikipedia carry 'Chung Yeh' (see gaps).

    Finding
The companion DANFS LST-1144 entry carries the detailed 1945-1955 narrative: after Galveston Bay shakedown (10-20 June 1945), New Orleans yard availability and Mobile drydocking, she departed 4 July 1945 with three other LSTs for Hawaii; at Kaneohe Bay when the war ended; ordered back to her port of origin, sailing 23 August, retransiting the Panama Canal 14 September, reaching Mobile 20 September. On 13 October 1945 she ran up the Mississippi to Cairo, Illinois, for the Navy Day celebration; returned to New Orleans 4 November; drydocked two days at Mobile; sailed 11 November for Little Creek, Va., arriving 23 November, and was assigned to the Service Force, Atlantic Fleet, at Norfolk. She operated on training and logistics missions until August 1954, when she was placed in commission, in reserve; placed out of commission, in reserve, 11 February 1955 with the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; named Sublette County 1 July 1955.

    Limitations
Ship-specific operational narrative; no asbestos or material content. Confirms this hull spent its USN career stateside/Atlantic - no combat-theater service and no forward-deployed postwar occupation duty in Asia (contrast Pacific LSTs); occupation service credited by NavSource is Europe-clasp Atlantic-Mediterranean duty.

    Finding
The official NAVSEA inactive-ships disposal table lists 'LST 1144 | SUBLETTE COUNTY | 1-Sep-61 | MAP' - the hull was removed/transferred 1 September 1961 under the Military Assistance Program, fixing the exact transfer date that DANFS gives only as 'September 1961' and identifying the transfer program.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST: the BuShips 1945 design table documents the LST-542-series machinery (two GM 12-567A diesels, ~1,700 shp, Falk reduction gears - a diesel plant with NO boilers), which removes the steam-lagging pathway and concentrates asbestos-relevant applications in engine exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch brake linings; 1944-45-era insulation, gasket, and friction products commonly contained asbestos fiber.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The NARA catalog returns 422 file units matching 'LST-1144': predominantly digitized WWII war-diary file units of operational group/commands the ship reported through (COM LST GR 102 - LST Group 102, COM LST FLOT 34, COMGULFSEAFRON, COMSERVFORLANT - consistent with her July 1945 Panama transit group and the Service Force Atlantic assignment), plus deck-log file units of other vessels matching the string. No per-hull deck-log or casualty file unit for LST-1144 was surfaced, and the NARA digitized deck-log index lists only LSTs that served past 1955 under county names - LST-1144 left USN commission in February 1955, so her logs (1945-1955) sit undigitized at Archives II. A 'Sublette County' catalog search returns Wyoming county-government and postmaster records - name collisions, not ship files.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming LST-1144 or USS Sublette County was found in the sources searched. CourtListener sweeps complete on both indexes: 'Sublette County' returned 1,603 opinion hits that are Wyoming county-government litigation (the ship's namesake county - name collision); 'Sublette County' + asbestos returned exactly one hit, Thomas v. JLC Wyo., LLC, 434 P.3d 104 (Wyo. 2019), a foreclosure/bankruptcy dispute over ranch property in Sublette County, Wyoming - a county-venue collision, not a ship case; 'LST-1144' returned zero hits on both the opinion and docket indexes. Live-web sweep surfaced only commercial/crowd-sourced ship pages and law-firm asbestos listicles naming OTHER LST hulls (Meeker County LST-980, Luzerne County LST-902, Tuscaloosa LST-1187) - none asserts asbestos aboard this hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era construction is consistent with retained asbestos-bearing materials. The hull was transferred to the ROC Navy in 1961 rather than scrapped through a U.S. yard, so no domestic disposal/abatement record was ever generated; any ROC-era survey is outside U.S. public-record reach. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
